cobb sri or K&N typhoon sri

Was just wondering i have never seen a ms3 run this intake and dont know why, when k&n makes some of the best intake items. which one would you choose. i know the k and n is more expensive but you get what you pay for.

Here is a link of it on our cars. I dont know if would get in the way from other things such as cobb FMIC or hks ssqv bov but let me know what you guys think and if its worth it. Has anyone got any sound clips of this on our cars?

Get the Cobb or the CP-E Nano. The quality of the two are excellent

Nobody buys the K&N because its ridiculously expensive for an SRI. The cheapest I've seen it for is $315... if you're going to spend that money, get a CPE CAI instead...

The k&n has been at the top of my list, but since the new mscai is out I have been thinking about getting it instead, and running it sri. Costs would be the same, and no warranty grief. I have downloaded the install for the k&n, and it looks like a great piece. I think you'd get a lot less grief from your dealer if the sri says k&n on it, as opposed to cobb, or some other name they've never heard of, but with the new mscai being out you can get it, and go cai, or sri !! Just my .02

K&N make good parts but the price is a bit high I think for a SRI. Cobb or CP-E both work great at a decent price. As far as warranty, if your worried just don't mod the car. A dealer that wants to give you a hard time won't differentiate between K&N or any other brands. If they want to give a hard time it won't matter what you have. From what I've seen the Mazdaspeed CAI didn't get good reviews on performance... I'm running the CP-E nano and no complaints at all.

go with the cobb sri..its the best bang for the buck...second comes the cp-e nano...but K&N is way up their with pricing...no good in my book

Yeah I know that the K&N is over priced and I could honestly care less about my warranty...i mean i still want to buy good safe upgrades i just wanted to know if anyone has heard of anything on this intake. Also FUNKSILVER07 what bad reveiws from the MSCAI have you heard except for the first version they didnt have the airflow straighter...otherwise its the same exact intake as the AEM. I dont even think you should really have to run a CAI on a turbo car honestly...and i dont care about hydrolock thats not why i wouldnt get a CAI. the gains are minimal difference and response of a sri is better for turbo anyways. Now if it were NA..CAI all the way.

I've had 2 red typhoons, and would rate them as high quality, and k@n kits usually add extra brackets and what not to keep the intake from shaking, and they came with the dry filter cover thingy also. I had one on my 02 protege es, and I thought it was the best intake for the car because of the extra brackets for support and it could be sri/cai. I also had one for the spec v, and it was basically the same. the protege cost like 200 shipped, and the spec was like 245 shipped. I think k@n went over board on the price of this sri for the ms3. if it were 250 shipped, i would take it over the cobb, cpe, and the other ones because the ones I had were pretty good and I've had no complaints about them. I would say wait a while and the price will drop on them, but if I had to get a cai/sri for a ms3 today, then I would say a cobb for the value, and ms cai for warranty reasons if money wasn't a factor.

Besides the first gen not having an air straightener it got low dyno numbers overall. I think it's basically a rebadged AEM design, I'm just relaying some info from other threads, which I shouldn't do since I don't have any direct experience with this part. I'm breaking my own rule, I don't want to spread any mis-information. If I can find any of the threads I will share those. The new version has the straightener I believe... It probably will perform like the others available. It is 50 state CARB legal too.

Cobb has a heat shield on their MS3. They need to release it to us.

Wow how can cobb have a heat shield with theirs and not release it to us. I think that when I call them back I will see what they can do about a heat shield. Other than that.... I was reading the entire forums on cai vs sri and i still think that i will get the sri because our vehicles are turbo charged and there is no need for a cai. you really dont have to worry about heat soak...well atleast i wont because i will get the cobb fmic anyways. Besides the air passes through at hot ass turbo anyways the only difference in temp between cai and sri might 2 or 3 degress 5 at most if its freezing outside and at a complete stop for a few mins. (2thumbs) what do you guys think cai or sri?

There is no need to put a CAI on an aftercooled turbo engine. If it was N/A, then yes, go with a CAI, but for the MS3 I recommend SRI. Save the extra $150 +/- so your can put it into something else more worthwhile, like a inlet or test pipe.

theres also no need for a heat shield with an intake if we have an intercooler... i mena i can understand keeping the intercooler away from heat.. obviously.

but the intake.. the air is just gonna get hot from the turbo anyways and a heatsoaked filter wont make the air THAT much hotter since its going into the turbo anyways, then the itnercooler, then the throttle body.. i mean i can see a heat shield being somewhat effective if its a normally-aspirated, intake to throttle body, engine... but not with our turbo'd, intercooled engined...

unless someone can prove me wrong, cause id like to know a reason for the heat shield...

so my .02 would be, the ridiculous price for the k and n, which is high becuase the heat shield is included, is not worth it.

It's really quite simple why no gets the K&N Typhoon on the MS3 - it's too expensive compared to the competition. It's practically double the price of the Cobb SRI and 50% more than a CPE Nano. And the only real "extra" in the Typhoon kit to justify its higher price is the heat shield which, as others have already mentioned, is of dubious value.

I personally think that the difference between the SRI & CAI are minimal at best. (I've used both by the way.) Everybody complains abut heat soak, how many times do you actually experience that.... most of the time your car is moving. Unless your stuck (at idle) for an in-ordinary amount of time your fine. SRI gives the best of both worlds, shorter tube means your getting the air that much quicker to the turbo...
