Gonna paint my wheels....on the cheap.

Hoooookay, so i went down to Sherman-Williams and talk to the guys there about wanting to mat black my stock rims and satin fuel door. They told me that i could achieve really good results with rattle cans, and the choice of mat black made it all the easier. So i bought some stuff and i want to double check with you guys before i screw my car up too badly. Ive got duplicolor primer, and scotch pads for the sanding. They told me to wash the wheels very well first, then dry them. Sand with red scotch pads and wash and dry again. Lay down two coats of primer, let dry, and then sand with the grey pads. Wash and dry. Then to start in with the Duplicolor mat black. Light even coats with about 45 minutes of dry time in between and finish up with about three coats. Let dry for at least 24 hours before putting them back on the car. This is a temp job just to get me through a few month till i can get some rims. The fuel door kinda worries me because this one needs to last. Thoughts? Concerns? Advice?

my thought is, why he fuel door? is it hard to find with the matching color of the whole car?

but yeah. the process of painting seems ok....just buy very fine sand paper, is betetr than the pads cos you can sand the places where the pad can't fit thru...

cover your wheels, or even better remove them altogether from the rim
make sure that you clean the tip of the can before spraying and don't stay on one spot too long. a good thing would be painting from side to side starting before the rim and stoping after the rim, in other words, don't make the u-turn while still painting the rim...

I dunno i just thought it would be cool if the fuel door didnt quite match as it does now. I dunno just a thought. Can anyone photochop this?

That's pretty much the exact same way how I painted mine. I would suggest putting on some clear though as it will help protect it from chipping and such. Here's mine done in graphite but gonna change as I am waiting on my other wheels which will be here Tuesday :)

i'm painting my wheels the same. i'm using 400 grit to sand them the first time around, then 600 after primer. i'm probably going to add clear also, i want them to be satin black... not glossy but not too flat... good luck.

im actually doing the same thing in about a week. But somne who made the thread on how to do this told me to use bed turck liner if i plan on doing my wheels black (which i do). He said it's tougher and less prone to scratching. You still do all the other steps but instead of paint you use bed truck liner..any thoughts?

Bed liner is thick and has a texture that isnt exactly something that i think would look good on rims, but it will last forever.

Very nice that would work pretty nice with all the body colors. Cool

jay32m, that looks awesome! Makes me want to go graphite with my wheels, as I too have a black mica MS3. I bet it hides brake dust very nicely.

Did you paint the "M"s graphite as well?

Sweet crap the fuel door looks sick! I picked it up a little early so there are some finger prints to sand out and recoat, but i threw it up there so you guys could see. Doin the rims tomorrow. So hard to find down time.

looks pretty good.

I did paint my emblems to match the wheels so it would all flow together. It def. hides the brake dust a lot better lol, one of my main reasons for doing this mod lol.
