Quote for rear wiper repair

Hey guys,

I just bought a 2002 Protege5 at the beginning of the year. I love it but unfortunately the rear wiper just died on me a few weeks ago. I tried to remove it myself but the nut and the bolt has completely rusted together. Because I don't have the tools to solve that, I took it to the local Mazda dealership.

I got a quote from them for:

a) Cutting off the rusted nut/bolt and removal of the motor
b) All the replacement nuts/washers/bushings
c) A replacement motor
d) Install the new motor

I looked online and found that I can get all the parts for $150 myself. After some haggling, I got the dealer down to $310: $200 for parts and $110 for labor.

So guys, in your experience, is that a reasonable price? I haggled with them for a while and that was the lowest I was able to get them to. I'm gonna go with them regardless but I'm just wondering if I should negotiate even harder.

Thanks y'all =]

No, buy the parts & do it yourself. Only get the mazda 6 wagon rear wiper while you're at it. Much better looking.Works every bit as good or better than original. The arm, blade assembly & cover are 35 bucks at onlinemazdaparts.com. The hatch panel comes off easy. Then it's just unplug wires, unbolt motor & put new one back on. Scariest part will be yanking the interior panel off - just pull & watch for flying clips. Put them back in & pop back on - simple. There's a how-to for the wiper mod - use search. Also service manual stickied somewhere in here or search for floptical.net there's a link to one there in many threads. Simple stuff, feel good & save money. No special tools needed. Check out prices for motor & wiper at onlinemazdaparts.com

anything the dealer charges is too much! do you have friend who has some tools and exp? i can't believe you can't fix this without going through all that expense?(uhm)

Maybe isn't your problem, but mine didn't work but you could hear it "trying" when I turned it on. Turned out that it was just the shaft bound up in the casting hole. (Took a torch to get the nut outside off.) I was lucky, the plastic gear in the motor assembly wasn't stripped. I just pounded out the shaft, reamed out the casting a little larger, lubed it and re-assembled. Works great.

^^^^x2 Did you happen to check with onlinemazda. Jason offers a nice discount to forum members as well as free shipping on orders over $100.

If you DIY this is the way to go. In my past experiences Jason not only gets me parts cheaper than my local dealer but he gets them to me faster than if I order them from my local dealer!

I also highly recommend the Mazda6 wagon wiper mod. Works great and looks great too.

Jason @ http://www.onlinemazdaparts.com is an authorized vendor here. You can call him or create an account on his website and order that way.

Check out his website and you will see that the discounted price is already shown. If you have trouble finding what you need, then call him and he can give you the part #'s.

I went the DIY route. The parts will cost me about $160 online, tools I had to buy cost me about $30 (a wrench and a voltage meter/detector to make sure the problem was the motor and not the wiring) and labor will take most of a Saturday.

Given that, and depending on how handy you are and how valuable your time is, $310 isn't a bad deal.

If you do decide to DIY, a large 23 mm closed end wrench (about $10 at the hardware store) makes the motor nut come off a lot easier.

BTW how many miles on your P5?
