Look like you have things under control ,now all the major work begins , stripping the old parts off replacing with new ,cutting out the rust replacing the steel with new . once you are done you will have a brand new 71 truck

Actually, I am going to go back completely original. I love mods, but with the rarity of this truck, It'd be a waste. So far I haven't found another....

Looks like fun.
My brother is currently restoring a '36 Chevy truck. Slightly Modified?! hehe :)

It is indeed truly rare, and I think the full rest is gonna be sweet when completed. You might want to let Mazda USA know what you are doing. You never now what New Old Stock (NOS) stuff they got in a warehouse that you might need.

It may also be worth contacting Mazda Japan as well for the same reasons . I would shoot some pics to Mazda USA as the rebuild progresses . Once you are done you will have a one of a kind truck

I will definitely keep posting pics here as things progress.

Mazda US doesn't seem to have any info at all (at least no one thats replied to my e-mails seems to, anyway) and the dealers won't even listen past "its a '71." Looks like I am alone on this one.

I'd love to find some of those old NOS pieces, but I don't hold out a lot of hope....

Hello Rady,

Good luck on the resto. As I promised, I will visit the old Mazda Dealer here in Montreal tomorrow to ask about your truck, they have some old timers still working there. I've printed your picks, hopefully someone will say hey I remember those and pull out some old invoices with model numbers etc....but thats in a perfect world. I too contacted Mazda USA for my 1974 RX4 as its rumored to be the actual car that was used in the 1974 Detroit International Auto Show but they had no information for me to confirm this. Actually, they did not have much on the old Mazda's at all. As I have mentioned, Mazda's are only now starting to be considered vintage. I feel its only a matter of time before someone in Mazda USA/Canada top brass decide that its history in this side of the world is worth something and begine to track down what warehouse their old records are in and make them available to us all. When this does happen prices of these old skool cars should go up in value and thier restorations will be made easier. For now as you said, looks like you are on your own. Your best bets would be Mazda Japan (as they made it) or Australia as they are and were popular there. Glad to see you are going all original and no mods. I agree, its to rare no to and would be a waste.

best regards

Max

Hello Randy,

I went by the Mazda dealer on my wat home from the office as promised. i showed hime the pictures of you pickup and that of the 1200 coupe. my contact there does not recall the truck but he took the pictures as he informed me that he knows who can help. He has only been with Mazda since 1980. he will get back to me in a day or so. he seemed confident that he would be able to get me the info. i hope we can finally solve this mystery. in the meantime good luck with the resto.

regards

Max

Mazda Canda Will Try & Help

Hello Randy,

Aside from contacting my local dealer yesterday I had also contacted Mazda Canada as I have a feeling this was a Canadian only product and that is why you are having so much trouble in the US with it. This is the reply I got today:

"Mr. Max G******,

We appreciate your interest in Mazda. We encourage customer correspondence and are pleased to be of assistance when possible.

We require the Vehicle Identification Number and if possible we will do our best to provide you with any additional information

Regards,

Customer Relations
Mazda Canada Inc.
55 Vogell Rd.
Richmond hill, ON
L4B 3K5
www.mazda.ca
"

I have emailed them the VIN # BTA65-25948 which you provided me last time and the puctures you posted. Hopefully we will have some positive news from Mazda Canada.

I will keep you posted.

Best regards

Max

More pics of the 1200 pickup

Here are a few more pictures of the Mazda 1200 pickup in its totally disassembled stage. You can really see the work we are up against to bring this little guy back to life! Actually though we have had worse!

To date, here's what's been done:

Truck has been pressure washed completely inside and out. (rodent nests extracted)
Cab and bed removed form chassis.
Cab placed on dolly and sheet metal being replaced and welded as necessary.
Bed being sandblasted.
All parts removed from both cab and bed, stored and labeled.
Parts sourcing.

In the coming weeks, I will be posting more pictures where you will actually be able to see some major progress and improvements.

Randy

wow, lots of "see though" panels. but since you tackled worse, I hope this is not as difficult as I see it.

That poor thing is seriously rusted...Are any replacement body panels or parts even available at all?

This is going to be one hell of a project to see unfold...I can't wait! (thumb)

I bet my protege5 will look that vintage (read: rusted) in like 5 years. :P

Can't wait to see how this progresses. good luck finding info!
