Valve cover question

What the fire.........

I have a donor valve cover that I am going to paint and install when the weather gets better here. I was looking at it and saw some silicone gasket material on 2 spots on the inside of the valve cover. Can anyone tell me what these areas cover ? I am just curious of what I am going to run into when I do the swap. I am assuming that I am going to have to buy a tube of Permatex gasket material and replace right ?

hmmm... might wanna post in NA tuning section also... those guys take their engine apart... hehe

Do you still have the thin metal plates that go in those locations? I also have a 2nd valve cover, left over from my old motor, that I was going to either paint or powder coat. I didn't even notice those gaskets in there until I looked carefully, I thought the plates were just screwed in there.

I'm not exactly sure what they do either, doesn't make any sense to me putting a gasket in there. Stopping oil from leaking into oil?!? But hey, Mazda must've put it there for a reason. Maybe someone else could help with the real reason they're there.

If you do decide to put a gasket in there, just make sure to get the high temp RTV. The oil and even the cover does get pretty hot

s***, that is how I got it. I didn't even know there were plates that were supposed to be in there........Guess I'll just have to get it painted up and maybe take them from my original valve cover that is still on the car.

to keep it simple, they help with oil splash and keep a pressure gradient for the PCV valve to function properly (helps with a smooth idle, among other things)...

they are totally reusable for the most part, but the picture shows they were destroyed..either way, they should be included with a head cover gasket kit from the dealership, which will also include the entire head cover rubber gasket which stays on the outer edge of the cover...You will only need to buy that gasket kit once if you are careful...
