After accident hollow sounding door...

A few months back a guy ran a stop sign and clipped the rear passenger side of my 2003 MP5. The damage wasnt major, but it was enough to warrant $1000 worth of repair (see pics). Anyway, cosmetically I think they did a good job, but I just noticed that when the door is slammed shut it sounds like a tin can!? When I noticed this I stood there like a lunatic going back and forth from door to door comparing the sound to the other doors being closed and its without a doubt different from the rest of the doors. So, I took off the door panel to see if they removed the plastic or loosened the speaker or something and it all appeared untouched. I also checked the seal all around the door and its all intact and looking good. Does anybody know what can be causing this? Its not such a major problem, but its annoying the hell out of me!

I hate to say it but, they probably used a cheap after market part instead of a factory door skin.

sorry to steal the thread
but it is the same thing to me
I didn't get into an accident
but the front door in my protege
after I put speaker/Tweeter/and (the thing that splits the signal, can't remember it now)
and whenever I close the door, it kinda rattles
This sucks:o  :'( :wtf:

I am assuming you put a crossover in your door to seperate hi/mids for speakers. If it is rattling, make sure that the crossover is secured in place and doesn't move, as well as, go back and make sure that all of the clips that hold the door panel on are in place and none are broken.

yes the crossover
Yeah, this is probably what is wrong
I will have to do it next week, the weather down
here is raining for a week straight
it sucks, but thanks for what I have been speculating!

having experience in body work i hate to tell you. its bondo thats causing it to sound like that. just think of how dyna mat works...

I was told that this happens when they use parts that are not original. Theyre usually cheap stuff made in korea.

I didn't realize this topic was still getting some posts...

Anyway... I now know that cheap parts aren't the problem, because the door skin wasn't replaced, it was simply repaired old school body work style (bondo & paint). So I guess my next question would be, does anyone think or know if something like dyna mat would make the door sound/feel a little more solid?

Thanx

the back doors on my mp3 sound lousy when closing too, I just figure thats the way it is. no accidents or anything; front doors sound just fine.

DooD, you LET them BONDO your car ? For 1k price ? Damn, I need to open a body shop in your area, and bump heads. (not flaming ya bro, but a door skin is about 2oo bucksm and paint would be about 45 bucks, with total labor for replacement and paint in at another 300 bucks. That is less then 1k, with a new skin.

Go back to the shop and b****, and if you went through your insurance company. b**** to them too, that you want a new door skin, because the bondo fix is depriciating the value of the car.

I dunno man... I got estimates that were as high as $2,800! Actually the grand I paid was for the body work (bondo & paint), resurfacing of the chrome rim and a re-alignment. From all the estimates I got that was the best and it came from a reputable shop that's been around for years plus they guarantee their work for life, so I went for it! I'm happy except for the hollow sounding door. :o)

As for depreciation... I hear ya, but it really isn't a concern, I just wanted it to look aesthetically good for as little money possible. Cause honestly the 110 miles I put on the car each day six days a week takes care of depreciating the value of my car just fine! :o(

The door could have been done cheapy but some of that cost was mostly the wheel well area. Since that is a solid piece all the way to the roofline they can't just replace that. One reason it sucks to be rear ended hard in these cars in that will almost totals it. :(
Think one member had that and it was close to 14,000 in damage but didn't look it. Just cause it was that solid construction back there.

Ohhh my bad man, I thought it was JUST the door. Ummmm, yeah, 1k sounds like a decent price for that work :D

I doubt that anything but a replacement could fix the sound. Just have everyone get in on the other side :D j/k

When my doors got hit, they sounded crappy when i closed them...i had them completely replace the doors and all is well.
