Prototype in Process: NSN Motorsports Manual Transmission Cooler

I"m really crossing my fingers that it shows up today so I can get going on it and provide pics! We'll see :)

Parts are in... I'll hopefully get most of it installed and at least start the preliminary testing tonight/tomorrow.

Here is a pic of the components in the prototype. The cooler and some of the fittings will likely change, but it's the general idea.

Thanks,

Steve

now that is a cute cooler!!! hahaha... maybe i can test the pump out here for you!!! let me know, i want that and the j&s.. so does dave

Yeah this proto one is a bit smaller than I wanted... but that should also help determine cooler sizing when I run it.... I might not have all the fittings i need (discovered two were left out of my package) so I'll have to see what I can and can't rig up tonight.

Later!

so this is a trans cooler for a NA or a turbo? Looks clean and decent!

It can be used on an NA protege, but the MT's hold up fine on an NA so it wouldn't be necessary... it would still provide extra lubrication and cooling... but the intent was more for high powered turbo'ed cars to be able to hold more power and lubricate the trans a bit better...

Here are pics of the prototype installation... a couple things to note... I haven't worked out brackets yet, but will have that ready for this when it's done. Also, we had tapped my transmission last time it was off the car... we have adapters though for going into the fill and drain plugs, so you won't have to tap or do anything to your trans to install this.

Nothing needs to be cut or modified at all to do this. The pump may need a shield for water reasons... overall it worked out very well. I'll be running tests this week on temperatures to get an idea as to whether or not this cooler used for the prototype is big enough or not. I'll also post data that I collect based on what the trans temps get to on their own in different situations as well as how much the cooler drops temps etc...

Thanks!

Steve

The blue tube you see in the first picture is the hose from the funnel for filling the trans up.. I was putting fluid in when I took the pictures... that's the color of redline lightweigh shockproof gear oil which is what I recommend for use in these transmissions.

Looking good Steve! I wait for the final results. Also, can you comment on pump placement and possible intereference with the ION FMIC piping that comes through that driver side firewall?

I have searched and can't find pictures of that area right now.

Found the pictures...

that will require a different placement for ION owners... there should be enough space on the side of the frame rail or directly under it in the same. In the second picture you can seee roughly where I'mtalking, but it is half covered bywhat looks like the stock air box.

Are you going to send the splash sheild for the pump if you decide it needs that?

Yeah, I'll include it if it is needed. but I drove the car with the setup you saw in a good bit of rain yesterday and it didn't get wet at all as far as I could tell... so it looks like it may be ok other than if you drive through a huge ass puddle... but then if you simply don't run it (I have a switch on it...) then it should be fine too!

any difference in temps? basically im asking if it works :-P

Haven't tested it yet... it WILL work... it's just a matter of how much this particular cooler does by itself... I'll run a number of variations and see where that gets me... testing will be all this week.

good luck with the tranny cooler kit. any guess on price for this peice?

The pump alone has a retail price of 185 dollars.... if you are REALLY lucky you can find it somewhere for around 172... I've never found it cheaper anywhere no matter how hard I searched... My dealer pricing is less than 10 dollars better than that.... so... LOL... My point in explaining that is that the overall kit with all fittings, hose, brackets, etc should be right at 350... I'm trying to pull the price down from there, and if this particular cooler size works, that will help... but 350 is the full deal.. it'll include:

Pump
Cooler
10 ft of hose
6 hose ends
2 Fittings for Pump
2 fittings for cooler
2 fittings for transmission
upper fitting for tranny
water shield
cooler
mounting brackets

Once i finish my testing and finalize the parts list and work out one or two more quotes with my suppliers I'll have final numbers and be ready to fill orders.

Later,

Steve

Definatly intrested. This should help the tranny hold higher HP and high speed runs much better. You know i'm down! Seriously, i've been waiting for something like this after hearing how so many of our trannys have gone poof due to lack of lubrication, etc.

And if you havent figured it out by now, i'll buy pretty much anything from you from now on.

The reason we are building it is because we do think it will help hold more power... Once I finish the verification of it and make it through my race on the 9th of October, I'll be putting the car on the rollers for another hour and upping the boost until the ignition gives up or the transmission breaks... I'm hoping to make it to 20-22 psi... so hopefully 400+ that will actually be in a dyno sheet and posted on these forums :)... but I think that the added lubrication and cooling will help the system overall... and I will recommend that people run RedLine Lightweight Shockproof as that will be what the system is tested on...

Thanks for the good words too! :)
