Guide How to reset Mazda Skyactiv transmission

:
2020 CX-5 GT AWD
Found this video recently and I think it's very useful. I know there is another video about this topic but I believe this one is more in detail, easier to understand. Followed the instructions and it worked! Check it out and leave some impressions!

How to Reset Mazda SkyActiv Transmission - Easy Fix for Bad Shifts!

Instructions from the video:

FULL STEP BY STEP PROCESS:

1. Make sure car is up to normal operating temperature before starting - if it is cold, drive it around until it's up to temperature

2. With car idling in Park, place foot firmly on the brake pedal and keep it there for the entire process - do not let up on it for the entire time

3. Put the car into neutral

4. Turn off the Car

5. Shift the car into Manual (-) and hold it there for 5 seconds

6. After 5 seconds, keep the car in Manual (-) and press the start engine button (car will not start)

7. Put the car into neutral

8. Press the start engine button (it will start this time)

9. Move the shifter to Manual (+) and hold it there for five seconds

10. Move the shifter to Manual (-) and hold it there for five seconds

11. The engine idle should increase and you'll see the gear display show "M". You can then release the shifter but leave it in manual mode

12. Once the idle goes back to normal, the gear display should show "M1". Once this happens, shift the car to park and shut off the engine.

You've successfully reset the transmission!

What problem does this purportedly solve?

Actually, on my 2016.5 CX-5 GT AWD that list of steps did not work.

But this list of steps worked correctly.

  1. Press the ignition ON to start the car. Depress the brake pedal, heavily, and keep it depressed during the procedure.
  2. Shift selector from P to N. Press the ignition button one time, to STOP the engine.
  3. Shift selector from N to M(-) position. While holding the shift lever in the M(-) position, press the ignition button one time to STOP the engine. Wait for 5+ seconds (ignition ON / engine OFF).
  4. Shift selector from M(-) to N position. Press the ignition button one time, to START the engine.
  5. Shift selector from N to M(+) position. While holding the shift lever in the M(+) position, wait for 5+ seconds.
  6. Shift selector from M(+) to M(-) position. While holding the shift lever in the M(-) position, wait for 5+ seconds.
  7. For this step, watch the shift position light on the dashboard carefully, since the light flashes only one time:
    • When idle increase starts, shift selector to M position.
    • The shift position indicator light should flash two times, finally displaying “M1”, at which point the RPMs will drop to normal idle.
  8. Move the Shifter back to Park, then turn ignition to OFF.
  9. Procedure is complete.

I keep a printed copy of ^this procedure in my vehicle, right next to the steps for adjusting the headlight aiming, alongside the owner's manual. Funny how frequently I seem to use all of those things. (Maybe it's genetic. Couldn't say.)

When I first posted this, it was under the second generation CX-5 section. I believe that it was later moved by the admins under the Guide section. Sorry about that.

No problem. I already had the procedure that I noted above, though I gave your variant a shot. Worth noting, since clearly there are some minor differences in the write-ups.

Would be interesting to see whether my write-up's specifics happen to work in your 2020. If you're willing to test it.
