Looking for advise on buying 22-23 CX-5 Turbo

I am looking to buy a 22-23 CX-5 Turbo, I have looked at dang near everything out there. I’m coming from a 2006 4Runner 4wd, and although I like the 4R, I’d like a little more luxury, speed and tech. The Turbo checks almost all boxes - affordable, quick, comfy, good tech, great design. What other pleasant surprises should I expect in the change from the 20 year old Toyota? Any advise, when I’m ready to pull the trigger, on what I should pay attention to in a lightly used model?

Generally you just want to check everything that you'd normally check when you buy a used vehicle, like interior and exterior condition, undercarriage and door jambs (to look for significant rust), under the hood to check for leaks. Check vehicle history for reported accidents, and service history for maintenance. 2022+ turbo models are the most reliable examples with the least potential to develop major mechanical or electrical issues.

I personally would skip out on any extras that the dealer will likely try to push, like extended warranty, rust protection, wax/sealant/coating, and maintenance packages. You can get the same (or better) sealant from an off-the-shelf product at your local parts store, like a $20 bottle of Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Spray Coating. And basic maintenance on this car is very easy if you want to DIY, but if you'd rather pay someone else to do it, you can take it to a reputable independent shop and have them do the work. As long as you keep the invoice showing the work that was performed and the parts that were used, your warranty remains intact.

One more thing, modern paint across the board is thin and soft - Mazda's paint is no exception. Unless the car has paint protection film that was applied when it was new, it will likely have some minor rock chips on the hood, fenders, bumper, and possibly the A-pillars and roof. Just something to keep in mind.

Buying a used turbo model, I would want service records indicating the oil was changed (at least) every 5000 miles with the recommended full synthetic oil.
On road, the CX-5 should handle like a sports car compared to the 4 Runner. Hopefully you're keeping the 4 Runner though, they were great vehicles.
If you are getting a loaded CX-5, some of the features I have come to really like (leaving a 2012 Toyota) are… smart cruise control, heated/cooled seats, 360 degree cameras, and the infotainment screen with Sirius radio.

I have a 2023 cx5 turbo and just over 40,000 miles and it has been rock solid...not a squeak or rattle and has never had to go back to the dealer for anything. I agree make sure you get oil change records (I change every 4000-5000 miles and only use 5W30 PUP) also check to make sure the plugs were changed at 40,000 miles as on the Turbo that is what Mazda calls for. Takes a bit of getting used to the infotainment set up but once you get accustomed to it it is great.

Mazda does not recommend synthetic for the turbo. I've never put synthetic in my turbo since new and it's had zero problems in 65,000 miles.

Concerning synthetic oil in this case, my suggestion would be to research the subject.
By “recommended” I meant recommended viscosity.

That's what two service depts. recommended for my 19, maybe Mazda's changed their minds with the newer models. I know there's conflicting views on the subject and maybe I'll re-visit it next time I'm in for an oil change but I would not pass up a vehicle just because it didn't use synthetic.

that is a little misleading...Mazda recommends using Mazda oil which in the USA is not labeled synthetic but in Canada is labeled synthetic..in the owner's manual it also recommends only the dealer change your oil.....it also says this..which includes all synthetics....page 6-20 in my manual
Only use SAE 5W-30 oil “Certified For Gasoline Engines” by the American Petroleum Institute (API).
Oil with this trademark symbol conforms to the current engine and emission system protection standards and fuel economy

I edited my post for clarity.
