Buying Advice for 2014 CX-5 254K Miles?

Local new car dealer has a one owner 2014 CX-5 with 254 K miles. Asking $6,000. With taxes and the BS "Doc Fee" I am sure the out the door price would be around $7500. I think I could get it for $6500 out the door. You know they hosed the former owner on trade in with that many miles. Carfax shows 32 service visits but many do not detail what was done. Wish they detailed if the transmission had been maintained. Any input or advice? Gonna be my daughter's college car if I were to buy it.

I would get something with lower miles if budget isn't the main factor. Lots can go wrong (mechanically and physically) as parts will deteriorate due to age. Have a mechanic that you trust go over the condition but at that age and miles, it's a gamble imo

A quarter-million-miles vehicle for $6K? Sounds high to me, knowing little else about it.

I'd want to see the service/repair history. I'd want to know the specific schedule of changing all fluids (engine oil, transm, transfer case, rear diff, coolant). I'd want a compression test and perhaps leak-down test, at that mileage. Would want to understand the condition of the mounts and bushings, since 250Kmi can put them through their paces. I'd question the suspension. All of that, particularly if not having documentary proof of services performed. On a vehicle with this many miles, If I could get it I'd love to see an oil analysis of the engine oil and transm fluid. Suspension, as well, which at 250K ought to have had the shocks/parts swapped long since.

Perhaps nothing's wrong with the car, and perhaps maintenance history has been stellar; perhaps not. But, that's me ... and I'm fairly conservative when it comes to well-used, high-mileage vehicles.

Still, it's a CX-5. Overall, a solid vehicle. Assuming the above has been well taken care of.

So it's 10 years old and has 254k miles, about 25k miles per year , isn't it?

I would be curious as what kind of use it's had to get that mileage. It might be good or it might not be good.

From the pix, the car is MINT. Not even the driver's seat outside bolster is worn so they probably had a sales route or commuted in it long distances. I'll probably pass because like GFrosty said, despite probably good maintenance there are a lot of items that are probably worn or close to worn out like lots of suspension parts! Probably some engine seals getting ready to start leaking as well. Think I'll pass and spent more money on one with way less miles.

To be fair, these cars are good for 600k km, but at that mileage, some expensive items may soon need replacement.

At that mileage, slash the price in half, and that sounds fair.

lets agree to disagree... 4cyl banger 600,000 km (350k miles) with DI... not even talking about the tranny or other aux items. This is not 2000s era cars nor a Toyota from that era.

Good video but he's wrong when he says the transmission is a closed system and that's why he never serviced the transmission. He's been lucky. 400k on the same fluid. I'd like to see a sample of it.

Totally agreed. Whatever he was saying about his preference for driving in manual mode made no sense other. That may have been in his other video.

Are you saying not to fear it or it has more life left in it but be prepared to put some money in it?

Although the CX-5 is a good car (I own a 2014) , due to age and mileage I'd pass and put the money towards something else.

No way I'd trust my daughter in a car with a quarter million miles on it. Breakdown waiting to happen. Pass.
