Beginning Treatment

As per PCB's recommendation, I began to seafoam my car's crankcase.

I went and purchased some low-cost engine oil from Walmart, a couple of filters, and one more can of seafoam. Dumped in half a bottle today, and I have vowed to keep a very close eye on the dipstick.

Already, the oil is appearing darker, so obviously the Seafoam is loosening something! Again, fingers crossed it doesn't release some unholy clot that would go on to grenade my engine. I might have to change my oil a little sooner if it continues to darken at this rate (noticeably darker after driving it for 4 miles).

After dumping in the stuff, I noticed something about my headlights. Not that anything was wrong, but that there were letters embossed into them.

Today, I learned that the type of headlight bulb you need is printed directly on your headlight plastic cover! Never knew this; perhaps this is common knowledge, and I never paid attention.

Interesting News

While I go to school and while I search for internships, I work at the nearby Jimmy John's. The Area Manager is a pretty cool dude, and we hit it off pretty well. We eventually got on the topic of racing, and how JJ's plans to stop its NASCAR sponsorings, since they practically break even every year. From there, I asked him if any small-time racing gigs ever get sponsored. From there, I learned that the company still regularly sponsors employees who race bicycles by paying their entry fee or by helping out with equipment costs in exchange for the entrant wearing particular apparel while pimping sandwiches, or something like that.

So, I asked him if it would be possible to get a Time Attack sponsorship for my racing events. He said that he always likes to help out his employees with personal pursuits like this, so he told me that he'll ask some higher-ups about it to see what the company can do. At the very least, I can get my entrance fees paid, and at the very most, I can get my car fully repaired/maintained and suped up with some goodies. Who knows if I would have to get my car wrapped in Jimmy John's livery?

Either way, that made me pretty excited for the future! I hope this works out, since the less money I have spend, the better.

I hope that works out man, it would be awesome to be sponsored and get help with parts and such. All for the price of eating JJ' s at every event haha

I really don't think you have anything to worry about.
There have been many threads here on the forum through the years with many people using it and nobody has ever had an issue with it.

Some guys do say it's just snake oil but you've pretty much proven it's doing something by getting dark in only 4 miles.

Some guys have been using it for decades on everything from cars to tractors to chainsaws.

The ONLY issue one guy mentioned was when he was putting it an intake of some car and it backfired launching his intake on to the driveway in front of the car.

If you're not comfortable going 100 miles before your first change, then it would make sense to change it sooner, but I personally would hesitate about racing with thick black oil.

Thanks, I hope it all goes well too! I certainly wouldn't mind heavily discounted parts and possible free lunches lol.

I know this stuff is pretty good, since I've seen several before/after videos of people using it. Notably, Chrisfix had a cool video displaying the carbon clearing on his piston heads. Really, his video and some others convinced me this stuff wouldn't kill my car. Yet, the thing that held me back the most was general insecurity, hence why I was concerned about releasing "clots" or whatever.

Guys like to talk on things the don't know too much about, hence why I don't go to the local car scene meetups around town here anymore [lol!]. It's like they get off to telling people they're wrong or something. I'm hoping this system flushing can be more usable data for others with doubts.

As for that guy launching his intake...holy s*** dude, do you know what thread it was? That's amazing, I gotta read that

No, that was years ago. It was in a Seafoam thread so Google might be able to find it.
I just remember some smoking parts in his driveway. It was the intake tube and air box not the manifold.

Black

Today, I changed out the oil for the first time after utilizing the seafoam treatment.

It's very BLACK

Couldn't tell if it was thicker than normal, but it was very BLACK. Wonder how many changes it'll take until I can clean out the rest of the gunk?

Meanwhile, while under the car, I was observing the broken half of the windgaurd under my car. Really makes it easy to see up into the engine bay from underneath!

Maybe after I get this car all cleaned up, I can really start to have a go at modding it. I really want to swap in the Hydra Motorsports lightweight crankshaft pulley, and I want to get those OBX headers, but alas, I'm still regenerating my funds.

I got a question for you guys: What are these little ziptie-like connectors called, and where can I get them?

In case I ever get around to the 1.8L valve cover + ignition system, I may have to replace these.

So anyhow, I decided to set my camera down behind my tailpipe to see if the thing would burn oil/smoke on a cold start.

It does, only very little around 3kRPMs. You can hardly tell, but it's something

I haven't tried it above 3kRPMs, but now I've been actually able to see my car burn oil out the tailpipe. I think I got to try it when the engine's at operational temperature now.

And also, here's something I tried to iterate a while ago, but without a visual. Here is my shifter vibrating/rattling/buzzing from 2.4kRPMs to around 3.2 or so. It bugs me a lot, but boy shifting feels so great...

Man I can't wait until school's out for the summer. I'll be able to work a s*** load, get my money back, and then burn it all again!

That exhaust definitely sounds nice! Ill have to get a clip from mine with the HKS.
One of the techs I work with found a sedan in a local junkyard with the racingbeat exhaust on it he snatched for one of his projects

Damn, in a junkyard? Lucky bastard...

I look forward to the your HKS clip!

Maybe Ill finally put the GoPro I got and used once to use today since Im off [emoji848]
But yeah! I left my car running outside of the shop the other day and he asked me what exhaust I had on there and almost lost it when I told him I spent like $350 on it. He said he liked it cause it sounded like a subie (probably the rough idle but I never noticed it) and the next day he pulls the RB outta his trunk [emoji23] said the car had some other goodies but mileage was unknown and all Id want is the coils, but again mileage unknown and Id rather get new or close to new

Mine rattles exactly the same but that's weird considering we have different setups

I think it's the fact that we both have the corksport bronzeoil bushings. Not sure how I missed it, but the product page states that you trade a more direct shifting feel for more vibration. It makes sense, given how rubber/polyurethane are much better at damping vibrations than metal is.

I'm going to try and put a rubber grommet in between the locknut and the knob to see if I can mitigate it any, but until then, I'll enjoy the buzzing :^l

I have the stock setup but I have the buzzing too, could my bushings be worn out?
Maybe? I'm very unsure of what might cause the buzzing other than the metal bushings. I used to have a thread about the buzzing shift knob, but it was deleted or hidden. Someone had a good idea, but alas :^/

Approaching oil change round two

I've remained dutiful with checking my oil dipstick. I'm at 80 miles, and the oil has darkened, but nowhere near as much as the first round of treatment. The darkening is very slight; enough for me to easily tell my oil level. I know the oil's clean when I can't tell the level too well. It's definitely going to come out somewhat clean looking.

I'm going to try one more oil change cycle with half a can of seafoam, and see how dark it gets. After that change, I'll switch back to a good oil/filter, and see how clean it stays.

From that point on, it's just continuing to regenerate funds.

When your oil dumps out clean, you can start putting half a can of Seafoam in your new oil (that's what I do).

That gives the Seafoam a chance to start dissolving the carbon that's burnt on to your oil rings.
The sludge should be dissolved but it takes more time to dissolve carbonized deposits.
Keep the Seafoam in there all the time. It keeps working.

I put a 1/4 can in with every oil change and then a half for flushes, should I start putting in half a can on regular changes too? I get a nice fog in the mornings when shes cold.
