Cold weather affecting electronics?

Gave my daughter a CX-5 for xmas and within two days she awoke to a car that drove but all electronics inside were off (MMI, bluetooth, etc). After running a few errands it came back on and worked fine up until this morning. Today, while driving, the entire entertainment system shut down while she was driving and then turned back on. It has been in single digits most nights. I find it odd that electronics would not work in single digits and if temperature was the issue, it should happen every night..

Today she had warmed up the car for about 5 minutes and drove it for 3. The screen went very dim and the USB port stopped charging the phone

I would probably have it checked out at the dealer. It’s been much colder here and no electronics issues. Plus, slow lcd refresh aside, I’ve never experienced cold causing electronics issues in previous cars either.

I'm in Ottawa Ontario. Last week was average -20C/-4F. I have observed a couple infotainment screen reboots while warming up. Issue limited to super cold starts. No other electronic issues though so not really worried.

There's another thread about cold infotainment reboots here, if you have the navigation system it may be related to the SD card https://www.mazdas247.com/forum/sho...-when-cold-on-2016-CX5-Grand-Touring-with-Nav

10 deg f here in charlotte yesterday for my commute. 19 this morning. No problems at all

Pah. I gave my daughter one CX-5 for every possible electrical setting pre set so she didnt have to adjust anything. Finding the right one can be a challenge.

I am surprised we haven't seen more complaints - cell phones and laptops are usually rated for 32-95 degrees F. To see my car work fine in negative F temps is amazing. And summer temps in triple digits - I am not sure what automotive does differently, but happy that all works well in most temp ranges.

Automotive electronics need different and more stringent certification process (especially temp ranges) than consumer electronics.
However, the said SD card might be a loophole here.
To check, pull the SD card and drive for a few days to verify.

SD cards are used in photography and also get more stringent testing than average consumer electronics. The good ones do anyway. Maybe not as much as auto though.

Check the software version of the infotainment system. Some versions tend to be more problematic than others. When I first bought my CX5, the system shut down multiple times before I’d even gotten it home the first time. System updates solved the problem.

Yea lots of dead batteries and flat tires. Those people who never add air and ignore the light....... when it’s this cold they pay for it.

We just dipped into the double digit minus here in C this morning; -11 this morning with a wind chill of around -20 C. This morning my phone wouldn't pair with my Bluetooth. Never bothered restarting the car as I was in a bit of a rush to get to work, but I'm going to test it out over lunch to see if it was just a glitch. I've had my Bluetooth be problematic between this new phone (Motorola/Lenovo Moto Z2 Play) and the car before anyway, so it may just be a minor glitch. No other infotainment issues to speak of though minus a bit of a slow boot up compared to my last car, but that seems normal anyway for the CX-5. And it isn't so slow that it annoys me in any way, just observably slower.

I’ve had my phone not connect, system reboot, backup camera go blank ect before without any cold weather. I just wouldn’t assume it’s happening now because of it. Very possibly just coincidence. And like I said in our extreme could ours has been working.

Whatever Mazda has done with 16 wipers / windshield de foger etc. is pretty crap quality. I have to warm it up 5 mins before It clears. I think the liquid my dealer uses has no de icing capabilities and it has been 20 F in mornings here raising to 46 by noon. I think I need new wipers. There goes $16 at costco :(

This sounds closer to what happens whenever I accidentally kill my battery and jump start it. Sometimes it takes it a while to have every electronic part restart (things like the radio, backup camera, auto window up/down controls, bluetooth, etc.). But that's usually only when it's been sitting dead for a while.

I'd make sure there aren't problems with the battery.

As for cold, I have absolutely no issues here. Just had a couple weeks of sub 10 degree weather. No issues. So I seriously doubt cold is the issue.

I am in Calgary, when it was -35C I also got reboot, also the screen and the backup cam were very lagging.

Yeah, I re-paired my Bluetooth (wiped both the car from the phone and the phone from the car) and it's working normally again. Just a glitch. Everything else has been functioning normally, and have no complaints so far other than no paint marker available for the soul crystal red on the CX-5 yet after almost a year into production. Went to order one last week and bizzarely there is no such item for the paint code on my vehicle. I have a small chip on my hood that I don't want to rust, so if it starts rusting, Mazda will be seeing me back complaining about the matter, that's for sure.

Just sounds like a bad connector/connection somewhere, maybe in a wiring harness or something. Mine is outside all the time and I've no problems whatsoever aside from a creaking seat when it's cold.
