[2016 Probably 2017] Turn engine off only

Some of us don't have buttons on our shifter ;)

I think that other method will work though. Will give it a try.
So you still have the old-fashioned gated shifter? I didn't know gated shifter doesn't have shift-release button.

On the shifter itself nope but if it's similar to BK Mazda 3 then you should have the little button slot to press if you need to change gears when the car is not running:

Yep, there's a little latch in the upper left corner. Pull that up and push something down and then you can flip the shifter into neutral when the car isn't running.

While I like the gated shifter, that aspect is admittedly a pain in the ass.

Never really liked gated shifters and am glad Mazda moved away from it.

I don't like most of them either, but I like the one in my CX-5. Very intuitive without messing around with a button or looking at it. And feels good in hand, especially in Manual mode. (drive)

Confirmed, simplest way. Stop, move shifter to park. Keep button on shifter depressed, press Start button. ACC mode.

Yeah that's what I was trying to say, couldn't think of the words at the time lol

I tried this yesterday and it worked like a charm. One bit of strangeness though. The car does indeed go into ACC mode with this method but only the driver's window can be operated. None of the other windows work, either from the driver's controls or from the controls on the doors. I didn't think to try the sunroof though...

The wipers and radio work at least.

That is strange. AFAIK all windows should be operating (uhm)

I don't ever want to go back to a key. What's so convenient about that? Being able to let your car run when you exit it? I don't ever need to do that. Nor would I want to. Someone can just break your window and steal your car. I don't live in the suburbs. LOL

I understand the usefulness with proximity keys. And yeah they are definitely more convenient. The Honda S2000 I believe was the first production car to use an Engine Start button, but it still used a regular key. The button operated the starter motor only, meaning it was pretty much a novelty. But with that you could just turn the key back to ACC as in any other car.

It would be nice if they made it so a press-hold operation on the button with the engine running would shut off the engine but leave it in ACC mode.

Am I the only on that's never really understood the 'advantage' of the push start button?

A fricking key in the ignition has worked fine for decades and seems to give you more options/freedom....

Safety.

A significant injury in frontal collisions is knee impact to the key and/or barrel mechanism in the steering column. Push start button eliminates this and is a cost saving for the manufacturer also.

Actually I think it was a late 90's Mercedes... can't remember the model though.

And if you're using Bluetooth for a phoncon, it immediately transfers it to your phone, which is annoying. Most cars keep accessories active until driver door is opened/closed. My neighbors car (not more expensive that Mazda's)s doesn't shut down if it senses a passenger, which is nice when my wife wants to continue listen to the radio....
