Help Me Decide: CX-5 vs. CR-V

Maybe by then I can talk her into the Quadrifoglio. ;)

I had to look that one up. 500hp and 3.8 0-60. Wow.
But damn, I can't see how you hate the new CX5 front end and like that front end. Looks a little like an old pontiac grand am overall. And I'm only saying that because you said you weren't buying one. If you are, it's gorgeous.

Nah, I'll never buy one, most likely. I will say it's a lot of car for the money though. Good
Value. Ha, I actually agree, the front end is the worst part of the Quad, other than that, it's stellar...

Drove the non-quad..pretty awesome too interior not so much but for 42k or whatever it was from the steering wheel it blows the 3 out of the water. Strickly lease material though.

I agree. I almost tried to talk her into the non quad (she was set on a CUV though, actually only a CX-5), but I like my cars fully loaded(I had to talk her into the GT), and I couldn't get over not having the Quad. I'm curious to see how they hold up over a few years time, and may reconsider the idea of owning one several years down the road...

There are a couple of new CRVs in our parking lot at work. One look at the butt, and its a non-starter. There is no way I would pay money for that. The cheap looking metallic gray painted plastic below the bumper is ugly enough, but the fact that it clashes with the bright chrome above makes it hard to look at. Don't get me started with the lights.. I drive an Acura and my wife drives a Honda, both great cars, but man has Honda design lost its way! They need to take some lessons from Mazda on eliminating visual noise.

Same goes for the interior. Just look at how cluttered and busy the dash and controls are.

This thread (and forum) is much more enjoyable now that I'm finally using the ignore feature for three people. (popcorn)

Now if you folks could stop replying to them that would be great (replies aren't ignored) ;)

To keep it relevant... thx for the inspiration bigtex!

The beauty about competition is that it drives advancement. The fact is that the CRV and the CX-5 are both such great cars thanks to the competition created by each other.

Between these two which car is "better" as an overall package depends on the person looking at them and how their wants / needs align with each. Mazda's "soul" will shine through for some, while Honda's practicality will appeal to others regardless of the other pros / cons for each car.

Fundamentally some will want NA vs turbo, CVT vs 6 speed auto, etc or vice versa. The beauty about a free market is that there's nothing wrong with a buyer choosing one over the other for any reason as it's their money to spend.

The CRV may be the winner on paper in terms of practical specifications and that in itself will make it the winner for some, but it doesn't necessarily make it the winner for everyone. There was something intangible about how the CX-5 suited us just right.

My guess is you'll see these two flip flop for top spot in similar reviews with the other as the runner up and likely closing out with a qualifying phrase along the lines of "it was so close", "if it were our money", etc.

Motor Trend almost says it themselves in the headline for the article "Head vs Heart". Since when was it dumb to listen to your head, and how often do you regret following your heart? Bottom line is that as a buyer you can't really go wrong with either.

This post is terrific and similar to what I was thinking.
I never thought I would be in the marking for an SUV, but I don't need a 3rd sedan in the household and a GTI has become a no-no after diesel-gate and having two teenage drivers. I am looking for something faster, quieter and nicer than my Fit manual plus a hatch and fit 4 tall adults. Don't really want one, but at least we all have some great choices available. With the compact crossover being the hottest class of vehicles, that competition means we are getting manufacturers' best efforts.

CR-V and CX-5 are my short list as well. Good options to have. As Stadum said, there are choices and everyone can pick based upon what is important to them. To me it is a contrast in practical vs. premium. I own both a Honda and a Mazda, so I am somewhat partial to both brands.

Honda is practical. More space in front, in back and in the cargo hold. Better acceleration and yet better fuel economy. Better brakes and maybe better seats. That sounds amazing - who wouldn't want all that? Plus this is the first CR-V I would be "willing" to own style-wise and the proximity of my Honda dealer near work, and it is a hard package to ignore. The cons "to me" remain the overall styling, including ugly wheels, lack of good color choices and interior plood. Also I hear very mixed reports on if the CR-V is noisy or not.

Mazda to me is the premium car they say claim they are. I love the styling, inside and out, and SRC is my color with nothing like it from Honda. The sophisticated and quiet ride would be very much appreciated. Then there are the luxury features that are important to me that are not available on the US CRV: heated steering wheel, HUD and to a lesser degree the adaptive headlights. Those features pull me in, despite knowing there is less passenger and cargo room and that the acceleration and mileage won't be as good on the Honda.

It will be a tough decision, but like for non-enthusiasts, it may come down to just one or two items. If the wife really likes one passenger seat over another, that could be our answer. By sharing our experiences, we can help each other make the best decision, even if it doesn't match our own.

Comparing the front and rear pics of the CR-V vs. the CX-5 tells the story. The CR-V looks like a toy with the overwrought styling. The CX-5 looks sophisticated and like something an adult would drive.

It looks like a CUV to me. The last CR-V looked like s***, IMO, but this one? It's "Every CUV" to me.
Looks like it's trying to be a bit futuristic. Also designed by someone with a ruler.

Hey if it floats someone's boat then power to them.

The interior especially on the upper top CX-5 models (GT/Akera) does look quite elegant.

Beautifully elegant (though admittedly some aspects (shifter) not my style):

Cluttered dash and readouts (in my opinion), not to mention those miserable little brown pieces.:

The road noise in the crv was a deal killer for me.

You know, Honda's all tend to be loud cars. Our Odyssey is worse than my 2014 CX-5 and my parents Accord is not much better.

Also, a couple of people have stated it already, but we are lucky to live in free market economies. Buy what you like.
