Thoughts on 16 vs 17

Exactly. It's loud as s***, and not in a good or sexy way. Terrible touring car, great grocery-getter.

In complete seriousness, this car swoops into a spot at the local supermarket bigly good. I think it was built for this purpose.

When I bought the CX-5 I took on the infamous 10 minute test drive, spun it around a parking lot a bit and I remember thinking "a bit loud but I can live with it". Thing was that part of the freeway had been renovated and is one of the quieter parts. Today, I'm on older road, with a heavy crosswind, and at 70 I've started leaving the radio off because it just adds to the noise.

On the other hand, at a stop light, it's surprisingly quiet.

Concrete highways are the worse for road noise. We have quite a few of them here

It's interesting what we as individuals focus on. And we're all different. I have two noisy kids in the back most of the time - when that gets too much, I turn the radio up, not off! Plus the Bose ain't half bad...

I find the car pretty refined at highway speeds even around NYC which has pretty woeful roads in light of the fact it's one of the most prosperous areas on the planet...a subject for another time.

I find the noise most intrusive (but still not bad) on initial start up and booting it hard. I'm guessing because it's a high compression ratio motor it's gonna sound a little more diesel-y, but it surprises me every time it starts up. Once the engine warms thru, it does attenuate.

As for giving it the beans, it's probably because I'm working the upper part of the rev range harder than in my previous larger displacement engines. Unsurprising that one. That said, I'm enjoying pressing the Sport button on back roads as it really sharpens up responsiveness by putting the engine in the meat of its torque curve

The startup noise levels is pretty much the norm across all Mazdas. My 6 does the exact same thing for about 20-30 seconds then gradually goes to normal.

With regards to giving it the beans, if your not in sport mode, how is it performing?

Exactly, it's stated right in the manual why it's louder at startup. Its got its purpose...

Definitely a little clattery but you're right it quickly subsides.

When not in sport mode, the engine is trying to optimize fuel economy so it's not as responsive. When hitting the gas it'll either start to build revs or it'll kick down. Both add a bit of a delay which is to be expected.

When you are on the highway that's typically no big deal. When it comes to passing cars that's usually an anticipated maneuver so getting the engine in the right part of the rev range is part of the process.

No complaints - you just need to learn the capabilities of the tool.

Good to know. Thanks for the feedback :)

I drove my friends 2015 CX-5 before heading over to the Mazda dealer on Saturday to try one out. I was completely set on a new Civic hatch (not really comparable, but I was looking specifically for a car with lots of cargo room). I was kind of considering the CX-5 because of how sporty that one felt vs most other crossovers from Honda / Toyota / Nissan etc, and in my mind, I put it in the same league as a car. After seeing the 2017 redesign I was pretty blown away. Seems like it's gotten some flack after reading around this past couple days, but it totally surprised me when I saw it in person; that slight audi / BMWish vibe those sleek / straight lines give off (maybe it's just me, but the slightly bubbly look of previous gen and other Mazdas from the current gen don't excite me too much;). I'm a sucker for the new styling though.

But after driving it, I was sold. My friend's 2015 drives pretty nice and it's fairly sporty but it is rougher than any other crossover I've driven. You feel the road, far more than the Civic GT I was looking at or even the Crosstrek XV. This is just the exact right amount of quiet; you hear the road, but everything feels well balanced between interior cabin noise / outside noise etc. Nice blend. I feel like it corners tighter as well. I drove the 2015 / 2017 back to back on the exact same turns and the new model really balances around tight corners superbly for a vehicle that high off the ground. Interior cabin is much improved imo, and again feels much more sleek BMWish / Audish in a way.

The upgrades between exterior styling / interior styling, drive quality improvements sold me on the 2017 over getting a decently cheaper lightly used 2015 / 2016 model. I'm in love with the new GT Premium.

Yep and I have no issues with it. Does surprise people who have never heard it before though

It surprised me at first. I told the girl, "wait a minute, that's not normal!" Lol. She's a manual person so she read, and found it. Definitely makes the car sound like a POS at first, but I understand the concept, and am cool with it.

All good!

LOL, you want start up noise? Did anyone else have an early Subaru EJ25 with piston slap?

Q: "hey man, is that thing a diesel?"

A: "LOL, Nah bruh. Don't worry, she's good..."

At least from the start up noise, we get peoples attention who otherwise would just ignore the car(s) (hah)
