Saw a 2017 CX-5 at the dealer today...

Just say no to leasing..i leased my first car 18 mos ago and regret the decision..the loaded x1 in prof...0 down 249/mo. Still have acquisition 1k, 350 disposition and another k for a sensible wt package. Re-tiring with staggered summer rfts would've been even more. Some cars i guess you get away without having to buy tires but still over 10k before tax, tires to drive 30k? Still not really a great deal and who else finds a 44k car for 249/mo with no down pmt? It had a few k miles on it and was an odd duck valencia orange rwd msport x1..its quick its fun, still i knew enough not to buy this vehicle but even the lease- almost any lease is a bad financial deal in the end. One thing i did get caught on was not being able to deduct tax on trade in for lease so that stung a bit also.

Are you saying the trade in value for your leased car didn't offset the sales tax on your newer purchase? That's odd. When I broke my one and only lease to get my CX5 the value of the leased trade in offset my sales tax quite a bit.
 
Not exactly the trade in of my wholly owned 128i didn't offset any tax on the total of lease payments or acq fee. It would have offset tax on a down payment which I didn't have. Different states may do different things with that but that was a gotcha for me..won't make that mistake again- I would've sold the car privately but they came up to a number (less 1000 or so that I thought I'd save in tax) on the trade so I went ahead..
 
Yes, the cheapest I see on e-bay when looking at 2015-2016 cars is 15K for a Sport with 46K miles. What is a sport retail, 23K?

Do the math....thats not anywhere near 50% and below 50,000 miles.

Remember, EBay has reserves and you don't know the history of the vehicle.

CPO CX-5's have high price tags.

Not that I buy on resale value, but credit must be given to Mazda for a vehicle that does have great resale value.

Err, I was trying to agree with you. You can't get a 1-2 year old CX-5 for half off. Unless it has been totaled or something else like that.
 
Don't everyone in Japan keep their cars for only a few years then buy new ones? How is the second-hand market over there and hence resale values?

It's been known to be good to buy cheap second-hand cars in Japan, own it for a year and then export it to your country.

They make it expensive with the road tax on older cars increasing annually, plus dealers give you wonderful prices on your trade ins, it keeps the economy going. I should have exported my 1990's Eunos Vspecial when I left Japan in 1993.
 
Saw a 207 CX5 at the dealer today...

I tried to check out a 2017 at the German dealership today...based off of what they tell me, my wife will be the first one driving a 2017 around here. They won't have them in showrooms till June according to their salespeople. We are also the first to buy a 2017 in Colorado Springs.

Congrats! I think you will really appreciate the improvements. I notice something I like more each time I go out. Seats are more comfortable, so quiet now at speed, sound system is so much better, etc. But I was coming from a '14.

I thought there was no need for the auto rear hatch. But when I pick my son up from school, he has his baritone to chunk in the back. Now, when I see him coming I can open the hatch, he loads it in and jumps in the passenger seat, and I close the hatch, all while sitting in the driver's seat. Not that the auto is really needed at all because we got along perfectly well without it, but now that I have it, it is pretty cool.
 
Stock Mazda OEM 17" Yokohama Geolandars have been on all 3 of our CX-5's. They are a little on the soft side, but that is the only compromise, as I am very happy with them as far as traction, cornering, and performance in our 40-115f degree climate.

As far as other 17" Yoko Geo drivers here on this forum, I have noted the avg replacement interval has been 25k-35k miles.

Wow. I thought when I bought my CX-5, Hertz or whoever just put their worst tires on it before sending it to auction. I didn't know the Geolanders sucked that bad.
 
Show me where a 2 year old Mazda CX-5 with 50k is half of what they were brand new....you cannot get a $30,000 CX-5 GT two years later with 50K on it for $15,000 retail.

I traded my 4 year old CX-5 Touring AWD with 58K for $14,000 and paid $27,000 for it.

I just did. I was offered $13,XXX for mine from the dealer, and they showed me current auction prices for similar. I PRESUME my 2015 2.5l AWD Touring stickered for at least $26K? Those cars are a dime a dozen and you see them at every stoplight here, so I am not surprised, but that still doesn't man I was happy about it, lol
 
Going forward the resale for cars is going to suck anyhow. Tons of changes and improvements. Old gen 13 corolla used to get 33 hwy, new gen gets 42 (yeah CVT but still). Yeah gas is cheap but it can hit $4 as well due to instability and then a 14 Corolla would be so much easier on the pocket.
Best strategy is to buy low - new or CPO or used. Pay the minimum. With so much safety / hybrids / electrics / self driving happening - what a 2006 Car is worth in 16, a 2016 car will hardly match it in 2026 in terms of resale.

Buy loaded used and nicely equipped new. I got a Touring - since it had the same 2.5L and Mazda's best two features : Trans and drivetrain, headlights - I was getting 1 of those in the touring.
I think a Sport would have been ok as well - if it had power seats, but in 2-3 years all trims will have a good set of features with self driving, more powerful engines reserved for top trims.

EXACTLY my thoughts! I traded in my 5.7L HEMI powered Jeep when gas was under $2/gallon here. I knew that with the election, possible instability in gas prices could result, and we have the mess going on in Syria currently, which potentially could alter the price of gas, as well as a few pipe-lines that didn't happen...i did NOT want to be left holding the bag with that HEMI Jeep in a $5/gallon fuel market! The CX5? I am quite sure that a CUV that stickers at 24/30mpg and runs on the cheap 87oct swill and has AWD and great safety and reliability ratings will go up significantly in resale/trade-in in same market...even if it only really gets 23mpg combined instead of 26.

You know what? I just figured out what I like about better about the 17CX-5s looks.

It's not "cute" anymore, which I think will appeal to more buyers.

Your 2015 CX-5 is actually 3 years old, not 2. Also, what you were offered on trade is not what one can buy on for retail. Two completely different things. This past June, I got $14,000 for my 2013 CX-5 Touring AWD with 58,000. If you were just offered $13,000 for a 2015, you were lowballed.

My 2016.5 is worth a grand more than what i bought for. Trading in for a new one. Will trade that one in for profit next January. If i repeat this for 37 years i can buy a loaded CR-V.

Even moreso considering I got $29k for my 2012 370Z with bald tires and 34K miles in mid 2014, when MSRP was $43K. Got almost 3/4 sticker! When I traded these vehicles in, I bought their replacements at KBB Private Party Retail.

What were the respective replacements of these said vehicles you mention? Were they new or pre-owned vehicles?

MSRP was $37K, I believe, if I recall correctly.

The CX5 was the replacement for the Jeep, purchased around July 2015 (within a month or so of it anyway)

KBB trade value listed it as $15K, dealer paid me $17K and change, and I got the CX5 at KBB PP Retail of $21.9K

So, at 6 years old, and 98K miles, my Jeep's KBB was 35% of retail, and actual trade in was 45% KBB retail.
On my CX5, at 3 years old and 58K miles, it is worth an actual and effective 50% of retail, as they offered me no-more than KBB retail, unlike the dealer who went over $2K above. In addition, they offered me no incentives off of a new 2016.5 or 2017 CX5 other than the standard cash-back incentives.

Basically, after another 2 years and 50K miles, my Jeep retained similar value as my much younger CX5. The Jeep also had sunroof issues, and a leaking transmission, and so forth. It was a Chrysler with 100K miles nearly! Still easily fetched $2k over KBB trade in. I think I got near PP Retail for it.
