Drove a 2015 Lexus CT 200T and noticed it has exact same issue... (uhm)
Ours recently started pealing in that same spot too - I was going to mention it during my next oil change. Must be some kind of design flaw.
Likely because it was locked and the transponder doesn't read with the engine on - try unlocking it from the door as you get out of the car.
I think this still does work in an emergency. I haven't tried it at higher speed but I was pulling the car in the driveway once with my daughter when she reached over and pulled the button while it was moving and it hard jerked to a stop on me.
Intrigued I tried later and it seemed when moving you have to pull and hold for a couple seconds and it again activated halting the vehicle. Again I was only going <5 mph. I'd be curious if it does the same at faster speeds for emergencies. Who wants to try?
I have yet to notice any reflection on my cx5.

Wife drove a CX-5 but said it felt 'junky'. I was leaning towards it for the AWD and tow rating, but it was not meant to be.
How does the saying go? One woman's "junky" is another mans treasure...
It sounds like she is a typical American who wants an isolated and cushy ride. And she has a number of good options if that's what impresses her. But that is not what Mazda strives for.
The reflection does not happen all the time but it happens frequently enough with certain sun angle. For me with the morning sun, the reflection from the air-cond chrome insert means that I could not really see the rear traffic using the side mirrors. It is seriously annoying and could be a safety issue IMHO.
I don't get the part where the car marker is trying to go up market but did not do enough testing to make sure that there are no issues. Wood or fake wood might have been better ...tongue in cheek ;-)

Not typical really. She drives pretty agressively actually. She ended up in a 6. It does feel more solid, even though a lot of the parts are the same as the CX5. Cowl shake over bumps and side view mirror movement on the highway was less obvious in the '16 versus the '15, but it's still there. The 6 was almost 6k cheaper, gets better gas mileage, and is cheaper to insure so it was a treasure for me!

Yuck! Thankful they didn't do that. Stuff looks terrible.
Congrats! The 6 is a great road car, especially for higher speed highways and longer distances. Not to mention sportier in the corners. I would be in one myself if I didn't need/appreciate the extra ground clearance and more accommodating cargo capacity of the CX-5. The 6 would be the coolest little efficiency sedan (and still fun to drive) if Mazda offered it with the sweet little 2.0L Skyactiv. I bet it's the standard base engine in most markets but it's not even available here (last time I checked).
Yeah. My comment re: fake wood was tongue in cheek. I agree. Unless the car is a Rolls Royce or a Bentley, wood just does not look right. Back to the issue, the reflection from the chrome insert is seriously annoying though.

The reflection from the chrome insert on windows/outside rearview mirrors is indeed annoying. This makes me a habit of checking the same issue whenever I'm driving a different cars. (whistle)
Well, after 5 months and 8,000 miles, I have a pretty short list of what I don't like about this car:
1) My rear view mirror (Homelink) cannot rotate up enough for me to sit straight up and still see the top of the rear window. I could tilt my seatback down more, but that's not comfortable for me.
2) My drivers seat is starting to wear in one spot and I think that is going to be a problem by summer.
3) I would really appreciate a "real" traffic monitor (that HD map sucks)
That's about it. I'm pleasantly surprised as this is my first Mazda.

Yep, inside edge...it's already "shiny" and appears to be getting very thin. Kinda lame.
Knew it. I'm generally very careful when I enter and exit the car. Even then I see signs of wear at this place.
Did leather change with '16s?
I don't really consider the leather in my '15 supple but it appears pretty rugged in my CX. No noticeable wear either.

Haven't seen interior of 2015, so can't comment.
I think the problem is the bolsters are more raised in 2016 in comparison to other vehicles in the category. As a result they tend to rub against my behind more than any other cars I've owned/driven.
