2008 2.3L 5 speed auto Dynotronics tune

how is the second version treating you?

Things have slowed down on Dynotronics end. I submitted my last logs almost three weeks ago and hadn't received anything new since then. I just got off the phone with Joe but an explanation was not given as to why this revision has taken so long. I'm guessing I fell through the cracks there. As for the 2nd revision, it feels like I may have lost a little bit of the throttle response from my first revision but at approx 3500 rpm at steady throttle input power picks up quickly, much quicker than stock. It is very noticeable. I have hit my highest HP and Torque readings on the Torque app on this revision. I'm looking forward to the next revision though to see if it smooths out engine acceleration.

So after a lengthy wait I received my third revision on Sunday and had my logs to him this morning. A few hours later I had my 4th revision. There is a definite improvement over stock power especially with these last 2 revisions. The motor has noticeable torque improvement, seat of the pants feel is great. The engine "pulls" stronger especially between 2500 to 5000 rpms. I also had Joe look over my last logs for any concerns as I'm taking her back out on track at Mid-Ohio Race Car Course on the 24th.

After loosenuts recent update, this really peaked my interest but didn’t answer my one questions, can I run 89 octane? My interest has always been an efficacy/mpg tune WITHOUT the premium gas requirement. I searched a bit and can across this thread that pretty much sealed the deal -as in no go- FOR ME :(

-In short, you are required to run 91 or 93 octane or there isn't much improvement.
-I'd like to know exactly what variables they are tuning/changing. So far, it sounds like (my guess) the tune advances timing and lean out the AF mix for more optimal burn but this takes away the safety net for 89 octane. There has to be more.
-Dynotronics sounds like a stand up shop. All the bad things about them come from misguided or unrealistic folks b/c they are a small shop. If I decide to follow in loosenut’s footsteps for more power, I will definitely give them a call!

This is a great yet simple to understand advancing timing. Everyone should own and wrench a Miata, even if for a short period of time.

that's awesome to hear... overall would you suggest Dynotronics ? do you think you will do another revision or is this it?

I'll keep sending in logs to Joe until he says he can do no more for me. I intend to get it back on the dyno within the next couple of months and that will give me numbers that will either back up my butt dyno or reveal a placebo effect. So far I would say that this has been a positive experience though.

You can absolutely get your car tuned on any fuel octane you want. You do not need high octane for a car to benefit from an improved calibration.

Yes, more tangible gains can and will be had on a higher octane. But it is not necessarily needed to run high octane.

There are a slew of parameters that can be modified in a calibration to make a better more powerful running car than what it came from from the factory

If you a want tune for 89 octane, just hit me up if you wish.

I apologize, I haven't been on here to update this recently. I am in hiatus with the tune at the moment due to winter and being busy with the holidays and other family events. I have flashed back to the stock tune to run regular gas during the winter months. Between delays on my part and also on Dynotronics I wasn't able to get to a "final" tune in order to do a second dyno run. That will happen after I have resumed the tuning process in the spring. So far I am fairly happy with how the vehicle runs on the last revision I received but still would like some smoothing of the power curve. The noticeable jump in power above 3000 rpm is a little too jerky and I think comes at the price of power under 3000. I will make sure to report back after I have resumed tuning though!

No worries, I've been absent from this forum for a while playing with my other toys :) I just wish we could swap in one of the 170 hp Mazda 6 engines and call it a day. It doesn't need much more power, I would think about 180 would be perfect. I was very close to buying a turbo kit a while back but the Auto tranny wouldn't handle the power reliably enough for me. My dream is to find a rolled over Speed3 that no one would miss the engine from lol.

Hey loose, good to know you're working on a turbo setup... still. I haven't ridden in sac02's post turbo yet, but maybe someday soon. For me, I HAVE to have instant feedback when tuning, so if my 5 ever gets boosted, I'll probably bolt on an AEM FIC and use that. It's cheap, it's proven, I don't have to wait on anyone else, and I can trim in my own perfect tune however I like. I won't be able to modify the base no boost map, but I won't care for the 5. But the S2000, Frontier, and CRX will still come first. Those all get full custom tunes. :D

Leaving the turbocharged 5 (one of only roughly three in the entire world) as your "daily driven beater/mule" right? LOL I don't suppose I could interest you in a 04 Subaru Forester NA build?

The 5 is the wife's daily... I hardly drive it. And nah on the Forester. I had the opportunity to pick up an old school Subaru RX (the 80s sedan) with the factory turbo 4 and 4WD for $1800 from a friend, but I passed. Wish I had bought it to play with.

The EJ series engines are incredibly strong (and durable) My 04 has 268k on it and still purrs like a kitten, albeit a very ANGRY kitten. LOL I keep looking at the Factory Five 818 with impure thoughts, they just started making a fastback coupe version, those bastards...:p

Still too much money for me. ;)
