2008 2.3L 5 speed auto Dynotronics tune

I must have missed it, who else had theirs dyno'd? The only one that I've seen was Phunky and I thought his was a manual.

I could have said M5 and then photgraphed their faces but that would be cruel I think.
yes, it would and you should! At least they would pay more mind to your request.

Very old member and the only auto thats Ive seen. Post is lost in history but heres the results: whopping 111 HP / 113 TQ :(. Important to note that this was done on a Mustang dyno with Colorado corrections. It seems just seems Dynojets are always optimistic vs Mustang dyno so it would be interesting to see your results.

Interesting read on the comparisons between the two types of dynos. I think that it sounds like their are a lot more variables on the Mustang dyno that could be mucked up or conversely make it more accurate depending on the operator. I will say that the dyno graph you posted is dang close to what I'm seeing using the Torque app, although I really haven't had a chance to really wring it out.

The other anecdotal evidence I have is that a subie brz wasn't able to pull away from me on the straights at a track day last year and those are rated at 200 hp. It may just have been the driver though(shrug)

Found an interesting read on the comparison of Dynojet and real world horsepower here on Mazdas247.

Pushed it a little harder today on the way in to work and obtained a HP reading of 141 using Torque, not that I trust that a lot. I need to find some time to find a stretch of road so I can push it so I can get repeatable numbers before Dynotronics starts sending me files. I'll need it to datalog as well.

Results are in...

zjyqdXDBjYHRUQRk3Fs4E3SjTINJuqKUGUUaD_1TB9M=w1186-h667-no

129.9 whp and 132.6 lb/ft of torque.

About what I expected but in my heart of hearts I was hoping for a little more. The dyno operator did say that he was surprised though, as the 85 degree ambient temp and high humidity was not the most conducive to good dyno runs. Now on to the tune and as far as that goes, I haven't received my first file yet.......waiting patiently.

Nice numbers with all things considered! Looks 12-15% more than the Mustang dyno, which seems to be the norm. My take away from all the dyno talk is there is no point in comparing other people’s dynos. It purpose is for tuning to observe incremental improvements for yourself. Here’s to hoping you get great numbers out of Dynotronics (drinks). I have debated the tune as well and you will help justify or nullify the cause :)

I looked back at Phunky's old post and realized you are the 3rd 2.3 auto dyno :)

Of course the 2008 Copper Red is! Everyone knows that.
Using the dyno as a gauge for performance improvements is exactly the point but you know how it is, higher numbers to start with would have made me pretty happy. It just leaves lots of room for improvement though!
I received an update today from Joe (Dynotronics) that my file is being worked on but not ready yet.

Be VERY patient. The money I gave Joe just helped pay his electric bill. I never had anything to show for it.

I've read everything I could both positive and negative on Dynotronics before purchasing. It is very hard to get a clear picture as to how effective his tunes are, some even stating damage resulted. I know your interaction with him was not very productive, I'm hoping for a very positive result but being patient is the one thing that I took away from all of the information I read. It seams that every thread Dynotronics was involved in devolved into a tit for tat with Mat from OV tuning. Time will tell and I will be completely honest with my results. That is one of the main reasons why I wanted to get my 5 on the dyno before and after.

I want to be fair to DT. I think he knows what he is doing and have at least seen some anecdotal evidence from others that they are happy with the results.

I think the issue with DT is their customer service. I think it is best described as s***. I don't feel any promises or guarantee made by them will be honored when it gets down to needing help with an issue. They seem to be overly defensive on an issue versus just saying "sorry, our mistake".

I'm very early in the process, but I must say that so far Joe has been very helpful when I've been stuck. Maybe past mistakes are changing future behavior? I don't know but the hiccups I've been having he has been on the ball to resolve. In fact, I'm preparing to load my first file tonight but Joe had to remote my laptop today to make Mazdaedit accept it because I was having trouble updating MazdaEdit. He has been very cordial when I've had my issues.

That is actually good to hear. I will sit back and watch your progress and hope you get the results you seek.

I've been curiously searching for an 2008-2010 with a stick. Thinking about building another boosted 5. But maybe make this one a little more insane.

LOL, you are one of the few people that have driven a boosted Mazda 5, so that has me excited that you'd want to do it over. I really hope everything works out and I get to put the snail on mine. I'm planning cautiously, trying to get the details right.

So thoughts after driving on the base file a couple of days:

Throttle response is better, I don't have nearly as much lag from tip-in to engine acceleration as I used to. At first I thought it may have been a placebo effect but I'm now pretty certain it isn't.

Second gear pulls a lot better. I hated second gear, especially when the trans is left in auto mode but there is a definite improvement.

Rev limiter is higher! I used to get throttle cut between 6-6.5k rpms where the vehicle would start to fall flat on its face, now I can rev it to 7000 and it just keeps pulling. I haven't tested it yet to see where throttle cut-off starts, I think I hit 7200 this morning before letting off. I'm going to find out from Joe exactly where the limiter starts now.

Now that the PCM has been given a couple of days to relearn and settle, I am going to begin datalogging tonight. I will hopefully have my datalog files ready to send to him by the beginning of next week. I wish I had time to do it all at once but due to a busy family life I don't have that kind of free time.

So I was able to get my datalogs in after work on Thursday. Really the hardest part is finding someplace to accelerate from 2500 to >6000 in third gear safely. At 6000 in 3rd I was going approx. 90 mph. I got my 20 min around town driving and two 2500 to 6000 pulls done in about 45 minutes. I sent them off to Joe that night and received my adjustment file from him on Friday evening. That is pretty quick turn around in my opinion. He also informed me that the rev limiter now starts at 7200 rpm. At this point I have to say all is going well.

Nice. This is same feedback, almost to a T, that I've read from Mz3 folks. Would like to see this dyno run for comparison. Does DT explain exactly what they modified in the files?

He didn't state specifically what was changed except rev limiter. He did state that he would be working to dial in Engine Load first and then work to develop more power. He stated that the first file should feel quicker than stock but nowhere near where the completed tune will be. My guess is the first file just brings throttle control to a more 1:1 ratio between throttle position and accel pedal whereas the stock tune is very conservative with throttle opening.

I received my second revision file on Sunday, promptly loaded and I will be logging tomorrow or Thursday. I hope to submit the logs before the hiatus that will be a week long vacation at Isle of Palm, SC. I'll be busy keeping an eye out for those pesky sharks. (boom03)
