Potential New Owner, asking some advice!!

:
2017 Mazda CX-5 GT
Good evening folks! My wife and I are in the market for a new car for her, and she is set on getting a CX-5. She wants the 6-speed manual, black on black.

We found a leftover 2015 CX-5 Sport that is exactly what she wants. it has been on the dealers lot for a year and only has 30 miles on it. The asking price for this one is $20,500. My question is that a reasonable price? This car is exactly what she wants and we are going to look at it and take it for a ride tomorrow evening.

For the 6-speed man. CX-5 sport, is this a reasonable price? Do you folks think we could get it for cheaper than this? I'd love to get it for under 20K but thought I'd ask here.

Any help is appreciated for what I should possibly look for, ask to be included, etc, etc. Thanks in advance!

You're going to get as many different answers as responses on this, but for starters, if they're "asking" $20,500, you can most assuredly buy it for less. The name of the game is negotiation and the opening shot is never the end result (unless you are willing to settle for it!).

Agreed. I'm not new to the car buying game, but I'm new to the CX-5 and Mazdas. This seemed like a good place to start to get some advice on the CX-5 and to see if the starting point is reasonable. I appreciate your response, thank you!

Have you tried getting a 'quote' on truecar.com? You can also search for inventory on mazda.com and email any other dealers that have the vehicle you want and get price quotes. As stated, dealers offer you a price with the full intention that you will negotiate. It behooves you to do so.

Keep in mind that this is why Mazda doesn't offer the manual trans on anything more than the base model. In some markets they're damn near impossible to move. This will effect your resale value down the road too, so make them work for every last dollar!

Have you looked at which mods you want to buy for it? MTX or ATX and AWD will affect some.

Truecar will only let you do that on the 2016s. I couldn't get any 'quote' on a 2015 and therefore feel it won't be as useful. I plan to negotiate quite a bit regardless.

Understood. My wife says she doesn't want all the bells and whistles and insists on the manual trans. We are both OK with it being base model as I can add pretty much anything to it that I need to (stereo, retrofit, fog lights, etc.). I'm not totally worried about resale as we plan to keep this for a while.

Haven't looked into mods too much. We've only talked about HIDs, wheels/tires, and some audio upgrades.

you can go on edmunds.com and get the invoice price for this car. Depending on the extras (floor mats, cargo net, roof rails) that are on the car, looks like invoice is around $22k, so I'd say $20,500 is actually a pretty good price. If that's their initial offer I'm sure there is more $$ to come out of there, but I doubt too much. I would offer something like $18,500 or $19,000 and see what they come back with. Might have to settle at $20k, which, if it's the exact car you want (and don't ever tell them that) then I'd say that's actually a damn good deal.

I'd add that you should go back to the dealership in person to negotiate, to show them you're serious. If you try and negotiate down from that $20,500 over email, they may tell you to kick rocks.

That was basically what I was thinking. The wife and I have already agreed we have no problem walking out of there. Thanks for the info!

I'd still suggest checking the inventory for a 2016 CX-5 Sport with 6-speed manual at Mazda USA website and see if there is anything available near your location. I do believe for $22,675 MSRP on a 2016 Sport with manual, it's very likely to negotiate to the $20,500 if there is one in dealer's lot as this is very slow-selling model. 2016 MY has many enhancements include updates to the front and rear seats and suspension system, as well as to sound insulation performance throughout the body. Electrical handbrake is also very nice too.

This was my thought as well, but then it also makes me feel like we could negotiate a 2015 even farther down, since they are going to not want to be sitting on that one. I'm thinking sub $19K is very possible.

Offer $17,500, meet in the middle. The game is to end up closer to your figure than theirs.
