1st full fill to dry tank drive

The drive route was relatively flat, no wind today, a little rain (about 20 minutes)

Drove 58MPH on cruise the WHOLE WAY - non stop - no traffic.

Took 2 breaks - no passing (maybe 1 or 2 trucks) - AC on - windows closed.

Thanks for posting the results of your test!

I regularly run my tank past "zero miles to empty" and nothing bad has happened to me yet (I haven't even run out of gas). I've averaged 449.2 miles for every fill-up in the last three months. My philosophy is "Why stop at a gas station and waste my time when I don't need to?".

The EPA Highway rating for my vehicle is 31 MPG but my LIFETIME AVERAGE (including off-road, lots of mountains and city traffic) is 32.5 MPG. So this is one vehicle configuration that is rated quite conservatively compared to real world MPG. The EPA Average is supposed to be 28 MPG and I'm 4.5 mpg above that.

I had to make a long drive and wanted to test it out. Knew the route was flat, the air was cool (in the AM it was) and the roads would be generally empty.

I'm a bit old school and still break in my cars the old way. Under 60 for the first 1000 miles, no fast take offs, passing....etc.

So - figured I'd give it a run.

Whoa, you're getting 34.2 MPG on a brand new CX-5 GT AWD! How did you do it? Unobtanium definitely will be very jealous! ;)

The OP already answered your question, I'll repost it for your benefit:

I wouldn't worry too much about fuel pump burned or fuel filter clogged because of one-time fuel ran-out. The engineers are not stupid and they always have some safety factor build-in. If one of the fuel pumps burned due to lack of cooling for this, I can only say the quality of failed fuel pump is very poor and it should be covered under warranty.

I agree.

That's great to hear and makes me very happy. It means that under normal driving conditions I should fair pretty well even when I'm not intentionally hyper mile'ing it.

I couldn't do this all the time as it's super boring and generally pisses people off to drive the speed limit - even in the right lane.

OK -

I sputtered out and dumped in exactly 1 gallon. Then I filled it up to the very top - right to the top of the neck and it took 14.1 gallons.

It was 2.4 miles from the dead spot to the gas station.

Bit strange it only took 15.1 gallons total to fill. My tank is smaller than yours and I'm able to put in at least 16.5 gallons topping it off, when my tank is nearly empty.

HPFP + 2800 PSI injectors.

OP...you're courting disaster. This isn't your carbed mustang or SEFI / TPI 80's car or even your late 2000's EFI Honda. Totally different animal, here, and this does NOT make it happy.

The fuel pump inlet inside of fuel tank have some height from bottom of the tank, and I just can't see how those dirt, if any on a brand new car, sitting on the bottom of the tank, will get sucked into the fuel pump.

I have yet to drive my vehicle the same way OP has (under 60mph, level ground, no traffic, no wind), but when I do find little stretches of road like that, I get similar. The only time I EVER drove like that was in my Jeep with the HEMI. I was on a road trip, and ended up on a stretch of highway with NOTHING! headed back to Louisiana coming out of S. AR.Literally NOTHING there. I was low on fuel and freaked out. Cruise control set at 50mph, AC off, windows closed, etc. The thing got about 23mpg, as I recall, lol I was stunned to say the least! It went up from 18-19mpg to 23. So I imagine if I did similar in the CX-5, I'd see a jump to low 30's from the typical high 20's I get doing 75.

Did it with my 2015 Mercedes, 2010 Honda Civic, 2013 Subaru, 2007 Honda FIT - no issues with any of them and put 100+K on all the Hondas.

Plus all the motorcycles.

Sorry - I must have been lucky to have thwarted disaster all these years :)

I know a great many number of people who do a great many number of things that are less than advisable over and over. It doesn't make it any more advisable.

180 mile drive this morning >

Mine does that too when I drive 20mph under the speed limit, lol

But no, you're not going to make me jealous. It's a toaster on wheels. A tool for hauling things around. A means to an end. Not some "the journey is the destination" type vehicle like some of my previous vehicles have been. Now, if mine starts breaking down a lot or something, THEN I'd be jealous perhaps, but as-is, I don't know that you even get better mileage than me. 20mph under on flat pavement is totally different than me driving the speed limit on mountain roads with LOOONNNGGGG grades to them. So, maybe, our vehicles are identical. Who knows?

There's that jealousy coming out.

You 16-17 years old?

You can't be serious, can you? You think I am jealous of your CX-5 because on flat pavement at 58mph it gets 34mpg? Of all the things in this universe, you think THAT is going to make me jealous? Why don't you post a pay-stub, or a picture of something nice (Rolex, whatever), and then try that angle? You'd have more luck, depending.

Also, no, at 16-17 I was all about sexy cars, not mini-SUV's. What were you into?

David does pretty well for himself. The man is a director for Wyndham Hotels. I'm just shocked that the BEST he could come up with is to post a picture of his mileage and go on a rant about how I should/would be jealous of it. As to chics, he's a family man. Married and has a couple of boys, etc., I do believe. I doubt he's going to post pictures of random hook-ups on this forum. But ya, maybe you can post up something nicer, David. Something a bit more inspirational, and befitting of someone of your means who is trying to make someone jealous on the internet.

I see no value in this type of test. I will drive once till the fuel light goes on and fill the tank till the second shutoff. Then I subtract what I put in from the manufactures info on tank size to get an approximate volume of gas remaining. Works well for me but, I follow Mazdas suggestion to refill at ~ 1/4 tank. Mazda probably has a reason for the 1/4 tank suggestion. Ed

Mazda does have a reason they recommend you refill at 1/4 tank. It's so you don't either forget or find yourself too far from an open gas station to make it without running out.

LOL - I didn't say you were jealous - others said you WOULD be jealous :)

No kids - never had any / never wanted any. Love my job - love my company. Recently promoted to Senior Director :) Married - 20 years - love my wife. Hook up's....random ones - maybe back in my teens and early 20's (boy those were the good old days)

I weigh 220 pounds, 5'11', bald, beard, own a couple motorcycles, and have great parents.

I'd give you my johnson size but don't want you to get excited :)

Seems as if I have touched a nerve - maybe one day you'll get good miles per gallon - maybe not.

Here is a photo of my most recent random hook up >> (the one on the far left in front)
