Noob here...leaning CX-5 in a couple months when my current lease ends

I was leaning CR-V and/or Rav4 until yesterday, when I visited a Mazda Showroom for the heck of it. Wow, the CX-5 is a gorgeous car. Now, this is the car I gotta have. My only hesitation is the cost...I am a sunroof guy (always have been)....just love em. Seems like this is going to be a $28K purchase minimum if I go that route (and thats for the Touring, which is fine). But as I am leasing, it still may work if the payments are right.

Looks like such a fun car to drive, and a world away from my current car, a pain in the ass little Hyundai that behaves like a skateboard on ice!!!

Anyway, I'll be reading up and down this board over the next few weeks trying to learn the lingo, and I'll update you all if I end up part of the Mazda fam...

Welcome! And I'm glad you learned about the CX-5 before settling for a Rav4 or a CR-V.

The CX-5 is a fun car to drive and if you let yourself do some comparison test drives there is little chance you will end up with a Rav4 or CR-V.

You won't go wrong with the CX-5. If you go with the sunroof package in the CR-V you're going to pay close to 30k. I believe it's bundled into the comfort package which includes power drivers seat, Satellite radio and the moonroof. Anyway it was that way back in 2008.

CX-5 touring comes with moonroof and power drivers seat. Only thing I'm kinda miffed at is the lack of satellite radio in the touring model. You have to go to the Grand touring to get it. Anyway, I got the 2016 CX-5 for 26k and a little change.

It's fun to drive, has plenty of power, seats are comfortable, fun to mess around with sport mode and lots of technology. Blind spot monitoring is great as well as the cross traffic monitor not to mention the backup camera.

CR-V's apparently have a very annoying vibration problem (google 2015 CR-V vibration). There's 100's of pissed off Honda customers. Rav-4 looks like it's trying to get out of the 90's although they're supposed to do a do-over for 2016.

Buy on the last day of the month, figure out what the lowest price you think you can get it for, and stick to it. Chances are they won't let you walk back to your car before stopping you. If they do, you can always go get lunch and come back, but, I'm betting they won't let you leave the parking lot before accepting YOUR offer.

I shopped the same...Rogue, Rav-4, Forrester, Tucson, Sante Fe.

I'm so freakin' happy and proud of myself rightly deciding on the CX-5. It's a beautiful car!

Agreed, I've had mine just over a year. I'm one of those, as soon as I buy a new car, I start doing analysis for my next one. So far, one year later, if I had to go buy again, it would be exactly the same CX-5 Trim I bought a year ago. Love my 2015, I think the 2016 is even better.

Other contenders for my next vehicle 2 years from now are the 2017 Equinox redesign(assuming that happens), or the Santa Fe Sport, or Tucson. But, so far, the CX-5 Touring FWD is still my first choice.

I had a 2005 RAV-4 that I loved but this time, after considering the RAV-4, CR-V, and Rouge, I went with the CX-5. The main reasons were more engine power, better handling, and better gas mileage, which were more important to me than a slightly smaller cargo capacity. My old RAV-4 had the optional V-6, but they dropped that in recent years. Looking at the top tier versions and comparing them to the CX-5 GT, I felt the Mazda offered the most bang for the buck. Also, the CX-5 has a very high safety rating.

So my touring should have a sunroof? I'm glad it doesn't for sure. But...interesting.

The recent crv as I understand has some reliability issues. The back half of the vehicle stylistically reminds me of a late 90s Ford windstar.

The little cx5 actually has a higher safety rating than the Grand Jeep Cherokee.

Killing the V6 rav made the baby Jesus cry.

2015 Tourings only had the sunroof as an option with the Bose entertainment system. I think they changed this for 2016 Tourings, but may be wrong.

I too had looked at the CR-V and Rav4, along with the Rogue. In the end it was an easy choice. The Rogue came closest in terms of creature comforts but the CVT was an easy deal breaker. The CR-V is still pretty ugly in my opinion and the Rav4 ended up to not even be in the running. The CX-5 just has everything you could possibly want: Great looks, great MPG, great handling, the drastically improved quality, awesome safety record, etc. Not sure if it was the crash test ratings but going from a 2008 Tribeca to a 2016 CX-5 GT I managed to get insurance that's $400 cheaper per year. I have no doubt you too will fall for the CX-5 once you drive it. If you have any questions the people in this forum are wonderful!

CX-5 Touring, including MY 2016, doesn't come with the moonroof. Moonroof/Bose Package is $1,130 MSRP additional. It'd be nice to get Touring Tech Package which has great LED lightings with AFS, and rain-sensing wipers!

My insurance went up by $5/mo as compared to my 2010 Grand Jeep Cherokee, and my Z06 Corvette (2011) cost similar (within $10-20/mo) to insure as my 370Z (2012). I really don't think there is any rhyme or reason to insurance rates, honestly.

I would pretty much agree, though I did contact about 6 different insurance companies and 1 broker. Only one company was more expensive than what I was currently paying. I switched from Liberty Mutual to Progressive. Might be interesting to have a poll on here as to what company everyone uses to see if there are any particular patterns.

Allstate and State Farm. I stay away from low rent companies like Progressive. I was hit by one of their customers some years back, and they refused to cover the damages to my PARKED CAR because it happened on private property (a gas station). The savings just aren't worth getting sued for, to me. He was a stand up guy and cut me a check for the damages after 3 shops compiled estimates. Sorry, I just have a low opinion of companies like that.

Progressive is far from low rent. They're the #4 company behind State Farm. Geico (horrible!), and Nationwide. I've had State Farm, they royally screwed me. Allstate's rates for me were the second highest quoted. My worst experience ever was being rear ended by someone that had Travelers. Their adjuster wrote it up for $73. I knew there was damage under the bumper that wasn't visible from the outside. I took it to a high end repair shop (in part because they do amazing work but also knowing it would totally screw Travelers for that ridiculous estimate) and it ended up being about $1100. A friend recently asked for opinions from others on Facebook and the overwhelming majority came back in favor of Progressive and against Geico. They all fail us once in a while, sorry you had a bad experience.

We've gotten far off the OP topic here but this may make for an interesting thread to start.

You're right, I just looked at my invoice and it was $1,130 for the moonroof and Bose Package. Still a deal and got the whole thing for a little over 26,000.

Direct General was my worst experience. They actually did things that were 100% illegal (authorized repair on my car at a shop I didn't want it done at, without my consent).

Back on topic, I really hate sunroofs, glad that it's an option on this vehicle! I hate vehicles that make them mandatory.

I think the only reason I ever get a sunroof is to make my gf happy. I open mine about 3x a year. But it does seem to add something to the resale value.
