The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

How can you tell its hydraulic? I see a big ol' electric motor integrated with the steering rack.

I don't like the electric power steering in the gen2 ms3's. I like that the pully pump type thing doesn't get in the way when taking the intake mani off but thats about it. I was just talking to a gen2 owner about why I like my car more. My car feels like its trying to kill me at times. Makes a s*** load of noise, vibes, and I can hear everything that is going on with the car at all times. The gen2's are too quiet. I feel like most cars are getting to that stage and being numb I like the rawness of my car and did not like driving the gen2 I was in the other day for an entire day. I would romp on it and it just went, no noise, no vibes no nothing just started going faster. And thats no fun

ahhh to be young again...

I see to side mounted items, one must be AC, the other PS, the WP appears to be on the face of the motor, by the tensioner.

Neat - they've got the engine pretty far back. Hard to tell if it's directly on top of or just behind the front axles. I still see hydraulic power steering though. I was kind of hoping Mazda would be getting away from that.

220 pounds lighter than the current model

For comparison, the NC which has hydraulic power steering has 7 pulleys/tensioners. This ND only has 5 of them, so pretty sure the two missing have to do with a P/S pump.

I was just speculating. The "ND" does have two belt-driven accesories of which one is certainly A/C, but the other does seem too big and too remote from the engine to be a water pump. I did notice the large steering rack assembly though. I doubt they're using a large, belt-driven, mechanical pump so I don't know what the other accesory could be.

I do find the transmission difference interesting. The "ND" transmission looks an awful lot like the old 5-speed "Type-M" transmissions Mazda used in a number of vehicles like NA/NB Miatas, naturally-aspirated RX-7's, older B-Series trucks, etc. with a different tail housing.

Here's another view. I'm almost certain it's the water pump. It looks like a radiator hose outlet coming off of it.

Relevant: what SuperMiata had to say about this...

"First look at the next generation Miata, er..MX5 chassis. Several interesting details. The pic is a RHD chassis. The engine sits further back than the NA/NB, possibly even further back than the NC. This is a true front-mid engine. Electric power steering. Drive by wire throttle body visible on the LHD side, meaning the head flows the same direction as the NC, opposite to the NA/NB. That means that those long runners are not coated headers but probably a plastic intake manifold as is de rigeur. Difficult to get the scale but those runners are very long, well past 14" to valve seat. That means possibly 2nd order resonance tuning. I'm thinking it will be a variable runner length manifold. Still a clockwise engine rotation. The front spindles, control arms and rear spindles appear to be aluminum. Not enough resolution to determine cast or forged. The front spindles are hollow indicating they could be shared with an AWD/FWD platform. COP ignition. Variable intake and exhaust cam timing. The transmission bell housing is blurred in this press photo indicating either the spec will change or Mazda has something tricky to hide there. No dual clutch as it would be too expensive for a car at the SRP the ND will likely have, and there's a shift lever besides. What's comforting to this Miata enthusiast is the same basic architecture as the first Miata 25 years ago. They got it right and have't messed with it. No struts, no transverse engines, no messing with what works to save a few pennies."

Very Avenger-esq to me.

And saw Muscle Mile/Pickett Racing is leaving the TUDOR Series leaving only 5 P2 cars including Mazda.

Why is it a 4 door? I understand it was "slated' to be a 4 door but never was made into a 4 door. Hideous front end.

Because Challenger. Companies aren't going to make two different 2-door cars on the same chassis or close to the same dimensions anymore. You are more likely to see a 2 door Dart before a 2 door Charger.
