IF you have modifications skills, pretty much anything is compatible. I think that there are some differences in between the engine compartments. Although I think there are some (few) that are compatible, pretty sure I heard that some don't fit.
CAIs and SRIs will reduce your torque in favor of about 7 hp high in the rpm range. People who use the car as a daily driver and Mom taxi can tire of this pretty quickly.

Yes going with a drop in is the best choice for our MZ5s. A couple years ago I did my own testing (NOT ON A DYNO) between the stock set-up, CAI, SRI, and the drop-in. The drop-in was the best, no low end torque loss but better then stock upper RPM performance. I'm happy with my K&N drop-in filter.
If you want the best of both worlds, keep your drop in filter and get rid of the intake tuba. You will have to remove your front bumper, but the effort is well worth it. I replaced my intake tuba with a two foot section of 3" aluminum flexible duct, held to the intake box with a 3" Fernco. It sounds fantastic (like a CAI) and doesn't kill my low end torque.
