RE: 2003 Protege Intake Manifold Shutter Valve
Emission Recall 3005C

only on certain 2003 model year Mazda Protege vehicles produced from March 3, 2003 through July 31, 2003 may fail to conform to federal emission standards.

if your P5 within that range, go see your dealer as soon as possible, beucase it said here Engine vibration, air pulsation and normal action of the valve may cause the mounting screws to loosen or fall out.

thanks for the heads up! I bought mine March 3, 2003....so I'm guessing my car was produced before then. But I'll go see anyways.

Look on the door jam, should have the production date listed there.

I heard about this a month ago or so from my mechanic, but i still haven't recived any paperwork yet.

take it in! I got lucky, the screw came out, went in cylinder #2 and the piston smashed it into the spark plug! very minimal damage (I hope!)

ok guys i'm alot nicer than some jackass's in this forum so instead of just complaining about how this has already been talked about i'll just pass on the info the way it was meant to be. if your not sure about the recall and your vehicle just go the mazda site. get your vin# handy, then register as a mazda owner. you'll just fill out some stuff about your car, year, model, and what not. including your vin. then if your vin gets red flagged for being involved in the recall it'll show a notice right there. then just call your local dealer they'll probably ask for your vin too. make an appt., done deal. it's a recall so don't worry if your not under warranty anymore it's still a freebie.

i just received a call from the dealer yesterday.....i am getting it fix on Monday....WOOHOO^^

Same thing here, except the screw went into cylinder #4. Boy those misfires scared me. Only left it at the dealer for a day. They took care of it quick.

i just bought my mp5 two days ago. b4 purchasing the vehicle the previous owner had told me about this issue with the spark plug electrode being compressed in cylinder 4. this had happend twice in that cylinder. im guessing ive lost two bolts being that ive lost two spark plugs due to the same issue. im currently working with my local mazda dealer to see if my vehicle falls under the recall. im curious to find out if damage was done to my cylinder because i have an issue with burning oil. I hope i didnt make a bad decision buying this car...

I had the exact same thing happen to me. A couple months ago, something came loose, banged around cylinder #4 and bent the spark plug electrode down. I replaced the spark plug, chalked it up to something random, and drove gently for a while. Then yesterday the same thing happened - P0304, Cyl #4 misfire, electrode bent. Thankfully I found information on this recall without much trouble and have a call in to the dealer to see if I'm eligible. Manufacture date on the door jamb sticker says 03/03. I'm not sure if that means March 2003 or March 3rd, but either way it sounds like there's a good chance I'm eligible and can keep my car from immolating itself.

Related question - how would I tell if the shutter valves were held open or not? Both times this has occurred, it's been when I've wound out the engine pretty hard (6k RPM or more). From what I understand, the VICS attempts to open the shutter valve around 5000rpm. Could there be a correlation here? Are my shutter valves stuck in an open or closed state? How would I tell?

Wow talk about necroing threads...

you can either make a new thread (and have people tell you to use the search function) or revive an old thread (and have people complain about the necro)... I much prefer the latter.

^ditto. Either is annoying, but this way at least shows that you're putting in the effort to search for it.

I saw one come up earlier today with someone asking if anyone else had rust starting on the rear fender... I'm thinking .. 'yeah, everyone.' .. then I see the post was from 2009 (lol)
