i just bought a new cx9 touring in august, the car is short on storage space. I put every thing on the credit card for the rebates so never have change. When I switched out of my pathfinder just ended up storing less stuff. The little area under in front of shifter I put my phone and employee badge since I need to get in parking lot. Just handful of items in console. Also noticed no lock on glove box, notice a few other cars not having that when shopping around, not sure why they omitted. Good storage in back of car with under floor storage though.
Like the coin holder, the glovebox on models thru 2012 have a lock. It was dropped with the 2013 interior 'update'.
Compared to the 2007 Ford Explorer that I had before, my 2012 CX-9 has an abundance of storage space! The Explorer didn't have any sort of area in front of the shifter like the CX-9, the armrest storage was deep but too narrow, the door pockets were also shallow and the glovebox would barely close with just the owner's manual inside!
I use the space ahead of the shifter in my CX-9 for my phone, key fob and sometimes I put my wallet in there because it hurts my back to sit on it for very long. I just upgraded to a new phone (Nokia Lumia 928, the current Windows Phone 8 flagship) and it's about 0.5" taller and 0.3" wider than my previous HTC Trophy. It sticks out almost all the way to shifter when in PARK.
I LOVE the CX-9's front center armrest, especially the two-piece, side-hinged lid. I also love having the power outlet inside the armrest and details like the cutout to allow a charging cord to come out the front while still allowing both sides of the lid to close. The capacity and layout of the armrest inside is nothing special. The glovebox is adequate for the manuals and service records and that's about it. I've always thought the overhead console sunglasses holder (in general, not just in the CX-9) is totally useless....the vast majority of people forget that it even exists and, if they do happen to store a pair of sunglasses in it, they forget about it and spend the next year or two trying to find their lost glasses...
The front door pockets are deep enough to be useful and they can accomodate a cup or bottle at the front of the pocket.
The seatback pockets on both front seats add some useful storage for the middle row. The middle row armrest console also has cupholders and a lidded storage area with a latch for some smaller items. The back doors also have pockets similar in depth to the front doors.
In the cargo area, the under-floor storage compartment is AWESOME! My 2006 Mazda3 Hatchback has a similar storage area under the cargo floor and it has always been one of my favorite features.
A feature that I really liked on the first-gen Mazda6 (2003-2008) was the the lidded storage compartment in the center of the dash, above the center control stack. My first car, a 1985 Honda CRX, actually had a similar storage box on top of the dash and I loved it as well. I would love to see Mazda include something similar in the CX-9 as well as more space in the pocket behind the shifter. My sister's '98 Dodge Caravan had a drawer that located under the front passenger seat for storage, also a neat idea.
