The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Menchies in Fairlawn @ 8pm tonight. Hopefully it doesn't rain. Again...

I think commons sense trumps most radar/laser detectors. I usually do 10mph over and haven't had a speeding ticket in about 5 years. I just keep an eye out and if someone suddenly jams on their brakes, chances are there is a cop ahead. And I stay out of the left lane as much as possible. You guys know I change lanes a lot, I figure cops are checking the passing lane more than the other lanes, and you can typically use the cars in front of you as buffers for the radar/laser.

haha mine rarely goes off. 9500ix FTW sorry I will type it out, For The Win.

And Pablo that video was good Atheist vs. Believer. The last line jamie kilstein said was great

I'd rather not have a radar/laser detector that constantly goes off giving me mini-heart attacks. I used mine for about two weeks and sold it on C-list.

Beep beep! Oh, sorry, garage door. Beep beep! Oh, sorry, automatic door at CVS. Beep beep! Oh, sorry, just wanted to sing you the song of my people.
I haven't used my V1 since 2009. My number of tickets depends on my mood, time of day AND month, and what car I'm in.

But ditto. And lol at the song of my people.

I'll cya guys there at 8pm.

I do the same thing, try to keep it around 10 over, watch for brake lights, stay out of the passing lane, and try to make my lane changes as smooth as possible (so you don't attract attention). I also constantly check my rear view mirror in case they're trying to follow and pace me.

Speeding can only be justified when you are going 30+ over. Otherwise it's probably not worth the effort. And when you are going that fast, a detector and a jammer will absolutely save your @ss from impound and/or jail.

Doing 10 over will not get your in trouble, get you anywhere any faster, and not even worth talking about.

All of this^ and I go 15-25 over. But not in areas where I know there are cops or have seen them lately.

Speaking of, has anyone noticed the complete lack of cops on rt 8 this year, downtown? Falls cops have been working it but I didn't see one Akron cop all summer hiding under the bridge or around a turn. Consequently, I haven't merged onto route 8 and gone below 80 through Akron yet lol.

10 over only gets you somewhere faster if the trip takes more than 30 minutes. I agree, it doesn't make much of a difference when you make a short 10-15 minute drive. It sure did get me to work faster back when I had to drive 40 minutes to work every day lol

I've noticed a lot more bikes being pulled over lately, btw. Have anyone heard anything about CLE trying to slow the bikers down?

Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen an Akron cop trying to catch speeders on 8 or 77. I feel like they have worse crime to deal with. Now the State Troopers on the other hand, I see them quite often.

The only time i ever see cops on route 8 are in Boston heights and by the Howe ave exits and every once in a while at the turnaround by highland rd.

On the other hand, Akron PD has been hiding on Cuyahoga falls ave lately just past tallmadge ave. See one almost every morning going into class

Ya definitely don't lose your job over speeding tickets! HAHA you can check your unofficial driving record online and I'm happy I only have 2 speeding tickets on my record right now. I tend to get at least 1 ticket every year, somehow I haven't had one this year (KNOCK ON WOOD).

lul...

Court: CANTON MUNICIPAL COURT
Offense Date: 7/31/2012 Conviction Date: 8/15/2012 Points: 2
Offense: SPEED 4511.21D
81 MPH in a 55 MPH zone

To bad they don't have my big ticket in there, haha.

Typically I stick to the 10 over rule of thumb but every then again, I have a pretty heavy foot when I'm out to have fun. That Canton ticket was when I thought I was still in a 65mph zone & I was trying to get around a semi in the focus... damn thing is slow.

If I had gotten a ticket for all the times I should've I would still be in jail. I've been pulled over more than 30 times but most of it was BS shake downs for mods and so on when I lived in Pittsburgh. Not bragging, but we all do stupid crap from time to time.

I just don't go more than 5 mi/hr over the speed limit and have nothing to worry about. I happily use my indicator, change lanes, and go around the person in front of me who's slammed on their brakes because of a state trooper. All while doing 5 mi/hr over the limit and smiling and waving at the trooper while I pass him.

I can rattle off all my tickets ever in one post:

2003: Speeding (70 mi/hr in a 55 mi/hr zone) - VA
2007: Following too closely/failure to maintain vehicle (Life Lesson: TSX's stop faster than Protege's) - VA
2008: Illegal equipment (aftermarket exhaust and too-dark tint) - VA
2009: Illegal lane change/failure to maintain vehicle (swerved to avoid retread, hit Aztec in next lane) - OH

I don't get the point of slamming on your brakes right in front of the cop. If you see him he has already made his decision on if he is going to pull you over or not so why worry about it.

My dad will attest though, he got pulled over and the officer asked why he didn't slow down and my dad said that the cop already got him so why mess with his speed. And the officer did say it is a sign of respect but I just think it creates issues for the people following that person nailing the brakes

Also I found this little toy that I convinced myself to go look at, http://tuscarawas.craigslist.org/cto/4078044185.html
Seems to be in decent condition and why not take a little time to check it out. I'm worried about the frame work they had done.... maybe it was wrecked?

Looking at the last picture of the ad, it appears there was a supercharger installed on it at some point, and was later removed. The price isn't bad though, if its was not wrecked and is mechanically in good condition. I sold my last Miata for 2500 and it had an original top that was nasty and some minor body problems. I wouldn't buy a modified Miata though, when there are so many stock ones out there.

radar detector has certainly saved my ass plenty of times. once i was driving home from an evening with my friends at a local establishment and a cop was hiding behind a guardrail. never would have seen him. i wasn't speeding a ton, but enough that if he pulled me over i probably would have gotten more than just a speeding ticket...

Anyone have a hookup for K&N HP-1002 oil filters? All the equivalents don't fit my sandwich plate/spin on conversion properly. $16 A filter is killing me

All the Bosch, oem mazda, purelators, etc.. only screw in a few threads and then stop.

Car and Driver did a great video about how to drive on the highway earlier this year. It's on their YouTube channel if anyone is bored at work today.

Slamming on the brakes is an admission of guilt that can actually be used in court believe it or not.

I'll see what I can do when I get a chance. If you can buy by the case I might be able to get the $ amount down a little. We'll see.
