I will get the platinum for about 15.5 out the door. I already know I going to add the roof rails (OEM) and start changing the tranny fluid asap. what else do i need to do as im getting started back in the Zoom-Zoom world?

we are replacing a mint Lexus LX470 that some jackhole totaled, it was a wrecker towing a box van the van came off and hit my wife in the drivers door. Brakes. CX-9's kinda go through brakes because really, they're just not big enough. Get some nice cross drilled and slotted and e-coated rotors front & back with some good pads to help overcome the 9's shortcomings when it comes to brakes. You might also consider stainless steel brake lines off ebay. Brake pedal is pretty spoungy on these, I'm considering ss lines for my cx-9.

You'lle also likely need to clean the chrome exhaust finishers. They're usually black in the middle/bottom from lack of cleaning by the previous owner. Mine only had 32k when I bought it, so I only had to use a mild rubbing compound to eliminate the black soot.

If it has a power lift gate, inspect the lifting rod where it attaches to the gate to make sure it's not ripping the metal from the gate.

Also inspect the rear of the intake manifold. On some earlier models, the bracket that goes from the rear cylinder bank to the top of the intake manifold got deleted from the build list on accident, and will cause increased vibration around 1800/1900 rpm. It's a diy but your hands will get pretty chewed up unless you remove a bunch of stuff.

Sunroof drain tubes can get clogged, so just spray them with compressed air.

There was a recall for the power seat overheating I believe on 2007's.

If the door check(s) are making a scraping noise when you open/close the door(s), you can either grease them with thick all purpose grease, or replace them.

You likely will want to replace the interior air filter. Open the glove box door and there is a white access door in the back. It is a 45 second diy, buy the filter online for 10 bucks or less.

If you have a GT, you will want to get a 4 wheel alignment and roadforce balance at a non-chain tire/mechanical shop. Reason being is that the nationwide chains hire teenagers that don't know what they're doing and those 4 wheel alignments are much different than a local pro tire shop which will go beyond the simple 3 point alignment.

thanks for the info helbigtw, as this will be the wife's DD i plan on doing a full detail and inspect all the running gear. It will need new tires in 20k or so and I will go ahead and do the brakes (brake parts seem pretty cheap$ on these trucks so thats good)

ok Tires can i go up a size, or should i stick with stock? I live in south Alabama by the beach so no snow to worry about. which tires should i buy the Nitto 850+ or something else

I will also have to add the roof rack, my wife thinks im crazy but it will only be for looks for me, they just dont look as good with out them my .02

I plan on adding dvd/nav/rear camera eventually after i overcome the 15k cash drop..... from what i have read on here the factory isnt all that great, should i go after market to get full functionality while driving or stick with the factory stuff?

The car is immaculate not a scratch or ding, i will post pics after i get some time to clean her up ZOOM, ZOOM i am real excited about the purchase!!!!

First off, I'm VERY happy to hear that your wife and little girl weren't hurt! My mom was drivi! ng my 2006 Mazda3 5-door back in July 2010 and was rear-ended by a 20yr old twit talking on her freakin' cell phone! Mom was stopped at red light behind a BMW X5 and that idiot never even touched her brakes and plowed into the back of my car at 40-45mph! The impact launched my car into the back of the BMW X5 SUV with enough force that the X5's trailer hitch nailed my front impact sensor dead-on and caused the driver's side airbag to deploy!!! My mom had a lot of injuries from the seatbelt pretensioner (which tightens the seatbelt as much as possible to pull the driver firmly against the seatback before the airbag deploys) and the airbag itself gave her some nasty contact burns on her arms, broke two fingers, RIPPED one fingernail completely off and fractured her left wrist. From her left shoulder diagonally across her chest (and boobs) and continued down the left side of her abdomen was horribly bruised. (Yes, I saw my then 56-year old mom in her bra at the E/R...I was so concerned that there might be more serious internal injuries I didn't even realize how I saw her chest bruises until much later....and I'm still in therapy.....it's impossible to UN-SEE things, I've always heard that but now I know how true it is....of course, I'm just kidding).

The twit called her douchebag boyfriend to come to the scene and my mom called my step-dad. The d-bag boyfriend arrived first and was talking smack about my mom was being a drama queen (she was crying because she was terrified). As luck would have it, the responding Georgia State Trooper went to school with my sister from preschool to high scholl graduation and he knew and loved my mom. One of the two first responders (paramedics) was my 2nd cousin (who also adores my mom). So they took care of him real quick and forced him to move his car at least 1000 yards away and to stay in it until their preliminary investigation was finished and the cars had been removed from the premises. A cop told him if he didn't comply to the letter, he'd be spending the night in jail! Sometimes, moving back to your hometown as an adult isn't such as bad thing....especially if you know and/or are related to half of the county!

When we called to report the accident to her (the at-fault twit) insurance company, they started asking questions about why mom was driving my car....none of their damn business!?!? My insurance company had already been notified the night of the accident and, just like I discussed with them, I can let anyone I choose drive my car and it had no possible relevance to the claim. They asked my me and my mom on mulitiple occasions why she was driving a car owned and insured in my name and I always refused which made them so pissed....and that made me so happy! Screwing with the adjuster and 'complex claims manager" became a sick hobby of mine! Oh, I don't think I've mentioned it yet, but I happen to be an Independent Insurance Agent, so I could call them out on every bluff, lie or baseless threat the instant they said it....

About four months after the accident, my mom found out that her cervical spine had been damaged quite seriously from the impact. She had a herniated disc between the C4-C5 vertebrae, which is serious but also fairly common and surgically repairable. But the C-5 vertebrae also had a fracture and bone fragments from it were pressing on her spinal cord....fun times! Based on the lack of progress with her bodily injury claim (she only wanted remibursement for her medical bills and reimbursement for three weeks out of work from her part-time job, not a cent more....and the last demand letter we sent was for about $32k and they countered with $7k??? Here's the real kicker, the insurance company giving us hell and trying pay less 25% of her actual expenses.....it was also the same insurance company my step-dad had been with for over 40 years and my mom for the 22 years she had been married to him. Home, cabin, rental house and 4-5 vehichles.....they were paying just over $4800/year for all of their policies.....I'm in the insurance industry and I can't even believe it. I suppose it would be unprofessional to say the company's name, but I refer to them as Snake Farm...or State Harm...if you're a great guesser, you might figure out the company's name...but I doubt it. :o

To make a very long story....well, a still pretty long story......we hired the law firm that is despised more than any other in the state by all the insurance companiess because they never back down from a fight. And they know how to fight dirty and actually seem to revel in it (they are shady SOBs and I wouldn't trust them further than I could throw them with anything other than a tough legal matter). They sued for the girl's full bodily injury liability limit (100k) and they offered half that amount two weeks before our court date and our attorney declined on our behalf. The he made his move and subpoenaed her cell phone records for the period from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after the time of the accident. There were six witness statements taken at the scene including two that saw her holding her phone to hear ear with her right hand the instant before impact! He had also learned that she had recently completed a two years of probation in her home state of Tennessee but didn't why. He somehow verified that it wasn't for a drug charge nor had she committed a violent crime, she was far too stupid to commit a white collar crime (IQ falls somewhere between an amoeba and dryer lint), so he felt sure it was for a DUI and/or other very seriuos moving violation. So he also subpoenaed her MVR report from Tenn as well as Georgia.
s
He had a PI conduct surveillance on her immediately after we hired him and had two separate photographs of her texting and driving within the same week. Talking on a cell phone isn't illegal in Georgia yet, but texting is and it is treated as seriously as a DUI! So he submitted the photos with other items he planned to use as evidence so the insurance company's attorneys would see it during discovery at least a week or so before our tentative court date. He also submitted a signed affidavit from the the two doctors (and the admiinistrator of their huge practice) stating that reason that my mom was driving my car that day. My then 85-year old gradnma was wheelchair-bound as a result of the "worst case of rheumatoid arthritus" her rheumatoligist had ever seen in over 20 years in that field. It was almost impossible to lift her out of my very low-slung Mazda3 and her wheelchair didn't fit in my hatch unless I folded the back seat down and then I still had to disassemble some parts to get it in. So my mother always insisted that I drive my nana (her ex-mother-in-law who despised her for my parents' entire 20-year marriage) in her new Acura MDX which made the situation much easier. Even though I felt like I might go to hell for doing it, the lawyer insisted that I have my Nana sign a statement saying that it was much easier for her to ride in mom's car and for me to get her in and out, etc. Nana laughed and signed it as best as her crippled little hands could and said she'd sign anythinig else to nail them to the wall.

Even though none of the statements from the doctors or my grandma were relevant to the case (and if they're irrelevant, then by definition they would also be inadmissable), the point was for the insurance company to finally learn the answer to the question that they were so desperate for us to tell them! Mom was driving my car because she had insisted that I drive her $48k Acura so the ex-mother-in-law that made her life hell for 20 years would be more comfortable....as I said earlier, they are GOOD!

The day after receiving all of these documents and the photos of her texting, they notified our attorney that they would be sending a check for the full liability limit of $100k via messenger before noon the following day. And they did. Then, to my surprise and actually without my knowledge, he filed a claim for the $50k Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury coverage that I had on my car at the time of the accident. He forwarded every document that had been used to get the at-fault driver's insurance to settle and it was clear that he woulld simply use the same exact evidence to sue my insurer if they failed to pay the $50k he demanded. A week later, they sent the check for $50k. The attorney (or Satan's crafty minion as I like to call him), got 40% which was $60k. Even though it sounds like a lot of money, to date mom has had close to $80k in medical-related expenses as a direct result of injuries sustained in that accident. So she got a whopping $10k in punitive damages (better known as 'pain & suffering')...and they could have got off the hook for just $32k....

Igozoom, you went way off topic. I'm sorry you hate insurance companies, but bhales was not asking for input on your life drama, he was asking for input on buying a vehicle, thank you.
------------

Bhales, if I were you, I'd stick to stock tire size. Some folks on here have done the calculations on tread width, sidewall height, etc and altered the tire specs, but I'm not sure how that affects proper tire pressure or other factors. But that's just me.

I love my 850 CUV+ tires, but if you're in Alabama, you might consider a summer/performance tire unless you are gonna be anywhere that has ice/snow throughout your travels. I agree about the roofrack, makes the vehicle look a little more aggressive and not so naked. My vehicle had the rails & crossbars when I bought it. But if I were to purchase them, I'd go with aftermarket flat crossbars.

My bike sits at an angle due to the oem curved crossbars, just fyi.

If you add nav/dvd/backup etc, deffinately go aftermarket. No question. OEM backup camera is weak, and you would have to drop a ton of cash to convert/upgrade to oem system like that compared to how little you would have to spend for aftermarket backup camera. I believe a bunch of them are wireless these days.

Igozoom, wow crazy story. Im in the trucking business so i see both sides of these things. I also know what a commercial vehicle wreck cost our company when we are at fault in the accident, and for the insurance company to think they are only going to pay 60% of what my truck was worth sorry. It going to cost you 60K instead of the 25K i offered them to settle, they were only $3,500 away from what i was asking, so now its go time............and its a forum its ok to rant every now and then just no full time hi-jacking

thanks again Hellbig, i have time to research for tires the wife wouldnt know the difference if i put regular SUV tires on and no more than she drives these will last a while. Im only going to order the side rails for now I have a full size crew cab GMC Denali that we haul stuff (boats, Kayaks, toys etc) so these will be primarily for looks right now

Sorry about that rant, I got stuck up there on my soapbox and my $.02 worth came out as $99.95! =)

I didn't even intend to share all of that but the mention of your loved ones being hit by a negligent idiot followed by a mention of attorneys caused a PTSD-like flashback....

Now back to the actual topic of this thread-

I definitely recommend getting one with Bose audio system, regardless of anything else. I have experienced the base audio system on numerous occasions in rented CX-9s and Mazda6s and at best, I would only consider it adequate and that's being generous. In a vehicle the size and cost of the CX-9, I consider it unacceptable. The same 6-speaker basic audio system was used all the way thru the 2012 model year in the CX-9. I've read and heard that the 2013 base audio system is much improved on the CX-9 and I hope that's true. The Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound is much better and I'm pleased with it overall.

I bought my 2012 in Nov 2012 when the 2013 models were hitting the lots. Mazda had some massive incentives trying to move out the 2012 leftovers and I ended up getting just over $9k off sticker. But before I was able to buy it, first I had to find it and I spent countless hours trying to track down the exact color/specs/options that I wanted but WITHOUT the Navigation system. My main issue with factory Navigation systems is that some/all of the audio and/or HVAC controls are integrated intot he touch-screen as well and accessing them becomes needlessly complicated. The display used on the 2007-2012 CX-9 is also a lower than average resolution, which makes it look outdated and sunlight also completely washed out the screen so I couldn't see a thing. It looked outdated because it actually was outdated, having been introduced more than six years earlier and designed a year or two before then. So I think you're wise to choose one without the NAV option.

As for color, I have the Crystal White Pearl and it looks really nice when it's clean. But if I could go back and do it again, the only thing I'd change is the color. I wanted the Sand (beige) interior but no dark exterior colors (so no Black or Stormy Blue) and I did not care for Copper Red either. My only other choice was Dolphin Gray and it was the color I intended to buy all along, until I saw it in different lighting conditions and in some light it had was very much a Green-Gray and didn't appeal to me either. So I took Crystal White Pearl by default. If I could do over, I would go with Black interior so I could get Liquid Silver. As long as you're okay with the Black interior, the Platinum Silver is a beautiful choice.

Do you mind if I ask if you were specifically looking for 2007 models or did these two that are near you just happen to both be 2007 models? In case you don't already know this, the 2007 CX-9 has a 3.5L V6 that puts out 263hp @ 6250rpm and 249lb ft of torque @ 4250rpm. The 2008 model upgraded to a slightly larger 3.7L verison of the same engine and that added 10hp and 21 lb-ft of torque (at the same rpm). It's not a huge diffierence, but it is perceptible, especially under full-throttle. The good news is that both engines have been very reliable and the 3.5L is hardly a slouch (especially with FWD). They have a nice growl when you put your foot down that I never expected to hear in a CUV, but I tend to enjoy it.

2008 is also the year that the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) was introduced on the Grand Touring trim level. When I first got my 2012, the BSM sounded like the most frivolous, silly idea to me. But after the first week, I loved it and I honestly hate on multi-lane freeways without it. I still give the quick over the shoulder peripheral glance before I make the lane change, but I like knowing if there's someone/something back there even if I'm not making a lane change...I've had a truck loose a load of timber a few hundred yards ahead of me traveling in the same lane on I-75 between Atlanta and Chattanooga. I had to go right or left and my car at the time had BSM, I would have known which was the better escape route! Instead, I ran a Tercel into the grassy median, but none of us got hurt or had significant damage, so I lucked out. But BSM is a technology that I wholeheartedly recommend.

Whether you get a 2007 or another year, the fact is that you're getting a great vehicle! =) I noticed that you plan to add the Mazda OEM Accessory Roof Rack. Just FYI- you can just the side rails if you're just wanting it for looks (which is what I did) or you can buy the side rails and cross bars if you plan to use it. On the dealer site that I use for all of my parts and accessory purchases, they have the side rails only for $319 or with the crossbars for $409.

The one other OEM Accessory that I recommend to evey new CX-9 owner is the Rear Cargo Tray and it's about $95. It's black vinyl and consists of three separate pieces. One covers the area behind the third row, but still allows access to the underfloor storage compartment which is why it's a separate piece. Thre other mount on the back of the 3rd row folding seatbacks. If the 3rd row is folded down, it looks like one big vinyl mat/tray covering the entire cargo area. WHen you need to use the 3rd row seat, fold it up as normal and the cargo tray folds up with it.

I look forward to hearing (and seeing) how things work out for you.....good luck!

hellbigtw- So sorry, but I was working on this on-topic response that I hope will be helpful in some way.

I've had a few of my 'calmatives' (Valium) and I'll do my very best to remain on topic.

Thanks I go, I bought the Platinum Silver 2007 b/c i found it one owner 73k, and got it for 15.8 out the door. the white one was one owner 70k but it would have been 17.5 out the door. there are newer ones in the area but they are all listed for 19k plus. i am a firm believer in getting the best bang for the buck, we will drive this one for a year or two and get another one. i only have about 19k cash and i dont want a car payment, my 2008 GMC is paid for and my wifes lexus was paid for, (i have two houses and a boat im paying on) so it was purely cost/value choice. My wife liked the sand interior and the white one, but we have a 3yr old daughter and she has already marked up the leather in my denali pretty good so the black will be a better choice. I will jsut have to super tint the windows so the wife doesnt cook her little legs on the seats. I live in Mobile, AL so its 90deg outside for about 9months out of the year. Most of my cars have always been white and the Pearl WHite paint is what initially caught our eye, i didn't really have mazda on my list of replacement choices never being around the CX's. Lexus RX, or GX(i had 4 lexus LX470's and put over 300K on each one) Acura MDX, Infiniti FX, or GMC acadia was my short list. Until we drove the WHite gt, i knew as soon as we drove it that she wanted one so it was up to me to get it done. I am a car guy, and a forum guy. I am OCD about my cars and research sometimes to a fault before i buy. ALot of times there is too much info on the web and can steer you away for no valid reason, I read horror stories about the tranny and diff on the trucks, but know enough about the products to know that those issues can be avoided for the most part with extra maintenence, I am a proficient shade tree mechanic and have rebuilt cars laying on the ground piece by piece as i got the money so this car wont be difficult for me, i also detailed cars for most of my early life so it will get torn down and done right form the start.

We are hopefully going to get it tonight its at my dads in Birmingham about 250 miles away so im trying to figure out how to go get it without burnung 2 tanks of gas!!!!!!!!!!

pics coming soon!

edit: also just found out there are 2 smart cards instead of just one......whew....thats like someone handing me $400 in cash

Congrats! Sounds like a good deal and I look forward to seeing the pics!

Here are a few things that you might find helpful-

I live about 50 miles north of Atlanta and I've always had black interior until now. After being parked in the sun all day on a 98 degree August day, I've actually measured an interior temp of 122! I also had to keep a towel in the trunk to sit on if I was wearing shorts on days like that to avoid 2nd-degree burns from the leather seats!

If the windows on your CX-9 aren't tinted, I highly recommend. Find a reputable shop that uses tinting that does more than just darken the windows. It can easily make an 8-10 degree difference on the hottest days. Also, get a reflective sun screen to put in the windshield whenever it's parked outside. Mazda has one that folds like an accordian and comes with a storage sleeve to protect it when it's not in use. It's about $55-60 or so.

Have you checked out the under-floor storage area in the back yet? If not, it's actually one of my favorite features and a great place for stuff like a sunscreen, umbrellas, jumper cables, etc. I also use it when I buy Clorox, Cleaners or even Milk so they won't ruin the cargo area carpeting if they leak. My 2006 Mazda3 5-door also has a tray under the floor, it's very cool.

It's interesting that you mention Birmingham. MedCenter Mazda in B'ham (Pelham, technically) has an internet parts business where they sell OEM Mazda Parts and Accessories at substantially discounted prices. The website is www.mazdaparts.org and I've been doing business with them for almost eight years. They're very knowlegeable and helpful whether you email or call, their prices are great and they'll go out of their way to help if they can. I met a guy on here a while back who had just bought a 2008 CX-9 GT and wanted to add the OEM Sirius Sataellite receiver to the Bose system. It has been discountinued (they changed it for 2009 and it's the only one still produced). I emailed them asked if they could get ahold of one and what they'd charge for it. They responded in a hours and that's when I learned that it had been discontinued. But the guy also included a full list of every single Mazda parts dept in the country showing one of the receivers in stock! Service like that hardly exists anymore. =)

I also saw where you guys were discussing tires earlier. One of the few things I didn't like about the CX-9 when I was shopping for mine is that all Grand Touring models have Bridgestone Dueler tires from the factory. I hate Bridgestones from past experience and reviews at some of the tire sites make it clear that they still suck! I was planning to replace the tires as soon as I bought it, but just by sheer luck I took a walk thru the Certified Pre-Owned CX-9s at my dealer and saw a 2010 CX-9 GT that they had just put a brand new set of Yokohama tires on. I told them they had to swap them onto my new CX-9 or I'd walk and they gladly did! I even got the proof of purchase and warranty card that covers 5yrs/60k miles, which never comes with OEM tires on a new car. They OEM Bridgestones are classified as "Highway All-Season" which is a new category for SUV, Crossover and Truck tires. My Yokohama AVID ENVigor tires are "High-Performance All-Season". They're great in the rain, smooth and quiet on the highway and it handles almost as good as Mazda3. I've been a hardcore Dunlop man for years, so I was disappointed when I found out that they don't make any 245/50R20 tires...actually, there aren't a lot of companies that do. As long as these Yokohamas continue to perform as they have for the first 12k miles and they last like my Dunlops have in the past, I'll gladly stick with them.

Real quick story (I promise)- My cousin moved to L.A. 20+ years ago but she visits home (Georgia) as often as possible to visit her mom (lives in Alzheimer's unit of a nursing home). My cousin had been very sick and in the hospital back in December and wasn't cleared to fly. She desperately wanted to spend Christmas with her mom but the doctor didn't clear her for travel...until December 23rd. So she paid over $4k for her and her hubby and three kids to fly across the country on less than 24 hours notice! She started trying to find a rental car big enough for them while they waiting to board at LAX but no one had anything. So she called her favorite cousin who loves her like a sister (me) and I gladly offered to pick them up at the airport five hours later. I have a good working relationship with several of of the rental agencies in my area. As an insurance agent, I arrange cars for my customers (or the people they hit) almost daily. But no one had any cars anywhere.

My initial idea was to loan them my 2006 Mazda3 to drive while they were here. It would be a tight fit but beggars can't be picky. I knew that she couldn't drive a manual, but (mistakenly) assumed that her husband probably could. My CX-9 was only 25 days old (bought 11/30/12) and, with a knot in my stomach I insisted that they use it and I'd drive my Mazda3 for a few days. They were here for five days and they raved about how much loved it the entire 70-mile drive back to the airport!

She called me on New Year's Eve, two days after they returned to L.A. to wish me a Happy New Year. And to tell me that she was calling from her new 2013 CX-9 Grand Touring AWD! She had a 2008 Lexus GX470 that they had leased for 3yrs and purchased it in 2011 when the lease expired. I go out there at least twice each year to visit and I drive it the whole time I'm there. I loved it, it was Pearl White with a gray-beige (mushroom?) leather, real wood trim and leather/wood steering wheel, had the Nav & Mark Levinson audio, rear DVD player and drove like a dream. But the 3rd row wasn't a pain to deal with and didn't fold into the floor so cargo room sucked and it wasn't easy for the kids to get in/out either. The tailgate was also a pain because it's not a liftgate, it's hinged to on the left side and you need six feet of clearance behind you to open it. One thing I loved about it, and it was very uncharacteristic of Lexus, was the intake roar when you put your foot into it.....and that 4.7L V8 had some kick, too. But the fatal flaw was fuel economy, if you can even use the word economy. I was there for 10 days last summer and drove it about 400 miles, the trip computer showed 12.5mpg for my overall average....on Premium fuel.

She's had it for seven months now and couldn't be happier. They ended up with a much lower payment thanks to a 0.9% financing promo and she's thrilled with getting 17-18mpg average on Regular gas.

They expected the salesman to be surprised that they were trading in a Lexus on a Mazda. When they asked him if anyone else had done that before, he walked them over the used lot and there were two other Lexuses and she spotted BMWs and Mercedes SUVs. There were other premium/luxury brand models also but she doesn't know an Infiniti from an Acura so she wasn't sure what they were. Anyway, I think it's a pretty awesome testimonial to the CX-9! I test drove an Acura MDX and Infiniti JX35 before I sealed the deal on the CX-9. Granted, the substantially lower price of the CX-9 didn't hurt. But the fact is that it's fundamentally as good (or better in some areas) than SUVs costing $10-15k more! =)

Welcome to the Cult of ZOOM, my friend! =)

Ok after a few days with the car the wife loves it, we loaded up and headed to the boat in the new CX-9 which was weird to me b/c i usually throw all the gear in the bed of my truck and go. But that being said it swallowed up our gear and performed great. I love this Platinum silver paint its much cooler than i thought cleaned up it almost has a smoke blue tint. I will definatly have to tint the windows to alleviate some of the heat off the black leather. I need to put batteries in the smart cards as one is already flashing. I had a check engine light come on sunday driving home in the rain but it was gone before i could get the scanner on it. also i definatly have a rattle/knock at 1900 or so rpms, doesnt sound exactly like a motor knock more like a loud rattle???? is that this problem Hellbig? "Also inspect the rear of the intake manifold. On some earlier models, the bracket that goes from the rear cylinder bank to the top of the intake manifold got deleted from the build list on accident, and will cause increased vibration around 1800/1900 rpm. It's a diy but your hands will get pretty chewed up unless you remove a bunch of stuff."

love the car, ordered some all weather mats and will be doing some more inspecting this weekend

Well that didnt take long, the car broke on the way home form the beach last night, the gas cap not tight dash light came on then about 2 miles down the road the motor started knocking and died. I think it dropped a valve or jumped the timing chain, doesnt sound good so much for zoom-zoom, hopefully the dealership wont cry to bad when i cram this POS through his showroom floor..

Oh man!!!! There is another guy on here who had a gas cap nightmare and they replaced all sorts of stuff that never fixed the light coming on in the dash. But I don't think he had any sort of engine problems. I've never even seen that light let alone experience any gas cap issues. 61k on my ticker and never had any engine problems except for cold-pinging from crappy gas which is solved via 89 octane. Maybe someone poured some sand into your gas tank?

Sorry to hear about it!

You might just pay a reputable mechanic to diag the problem first before taking it back to the dealer, that way you have grounds to stand on.

Mazda just called said it threw a rod, they want $7,500, and she said they are on backorder? WTF are there that many 07 cx-9 motors blowing up that they cant build them fast enough? i wonder can i put an 08-up motor in it, isnt everything else the same?

I would think the 3.7 would share everything of the 3.5, maybe a different ecu flash? If they don't cover that since you just bought it you should sue the pants off them. That is rediculous.

If you are stuck with the bill, I can help you.

You will want to find a salvage yard that has a used motor. Said salvage yard will need to be reputable.
You will want to purchase a warranty. Most basic motor warranties carry a 6 to 12 month parts/labor warranty, but you can purchase longer warranties for an additional fee.
That is the way to go. But really, if you have a 3 year warranty, and at 3 years, the motor is still fine, you know there is nothing to worry about that you wouldn't have to normally worry about. Reputable salvage yards keep motors tagged inside an indoor warehouse and have all the holes sealed off...the whole thing is cleaned, sealed and shrink wrapped.

Don't have the dealer do the work, obviously.

Have a reputable mechanic do the work. If it were me, I would take mine to Powers Transmissions. I can't speak for other ones, but the one down the road from me is very honest, reputable, A+ BBB rating, and I have worked professionally with them on several occaisons.

What you want is a mechanical shop who is trust worthy and charges you labor not based on their own guestimate, but rather from an actual labor book such as ALLDATA which gives the labor amount for any given task, such as "Remove & Replace Long Block With Transfer of Parts" or "Without Transfer of Parts."

If you get the salvage yard lined up to freight the motor to your mechanic and work the deal out with your mechanic, that is the route to go.

Let me know if you end up going this route, I can try and find some good salvage yards in your location.
I've been in the collision repair (insurance side) for 7.5 years now, and can find people who know who the good salvage yards are.

One quick and easy way to look around is to go to www.car-part.com (not carpart.com) and input all the fields.

Let me know if I can help.

p.s. I have corporate access to ALLDATAPRO so if there is something I can help you out with, I can send you any pdf's you might need.

The dealership i bought the car from is going to split the cost with me on another car i am buying from them for my sister, I know what your thinking but My brother knows these guys well and we buy and sell used class 8 trucks so i know what the score is and these guys have sent us some business already, i let you know when the motor is in and the car is back up and running..............

well she alive, and after driving the car with the new motor i think there might have been something off with the old one the whole time we had it, this one is much quieter all the way though the RPM's and doesnt have the rattle/knock that the old one had at 1900-2100 RPM's so far so good, the benefit the A/C had to be evaced and the transmission fluid all changed so the entire car has basically been gone through and hopefully we are all set, with the $4,626.20 for the new motor install + the $15,800 i paid for the car to start with the wife will be driving it for a while, the other good news the motor only has 42k so we should get another 5 or 6 yrs out of it ZOOM-ZOOM...........
