Do you use the same magnets for track days? I lost one of my magentic numbers the last time I was at Mid-Ohio :( I still need to get a replacement.

To AJ's comment I'd think magnets would be worse for paint than vinyl stickers.

Yeah I typically use just the number 4. The "Mazda" and "Toyo" magnets I'm just running this weekend for contingency in the unlikely event that I end up in the top 3 in class.

But yeah I use 30 mil magnetic sheet so they aren't coming off at speed.

in what world are magnets worse....

It all depends how anal you are about your paint. There is no way to ensure the back of the magnet is going to be clean enough to not harm the paint at least slightly. I have some swirl mark type scratches from where I always put my autocross numbers. But, they polish right out with some wax or polish.

Vinyl isn't going to move at all once it's applied. You just have to deal with the adhesive if/when you remove the sticker.

as long as the car is waxed and the magnets are clean i dont see how it would damage

That's why I said it depends on how anal you are. Bust out a loupe after running an autocross with magnetic numbers on your paint and you'll see.

Oh man, I just realized you use the number 4. Not that we'll ever been in the same event anytime soon but I always ran as "04" at NASA events. I lost one of the zeros so now I'm "4" too.

This is what I was getting at. The possibility of getting crap between the magnet and the paint just seems higher. Also, if something does get in there the heavier magnetic would want to push it into the paint more so than vinyl, right? Either way, like you said if you're careful about it it shouldn't make a difference. Don't magnets weigh more???

Yeah about the weight but it's worth it to me to not have them permanently affixed to the car. :)

I have had 4 and 10 taken several times so therefore I have a bunch of other options. Haha.

I did the SCCA Championship Tour in Wilmington this past weekend and it was crazy fun. Turns out it is an awesome experience when you take an autocross with a lot of people (around 270) drivers and add the national level of competitiveness. I'm definitely hooked and will be doing all of the national events within a couple hour drive next year.

Saturday morning was raining, which made for a not fun experience driving to the event on my Toyos with about 2/32nds of tread. Luckily it stopped by the time I arrived at the event site at Wilmington Air Park.

All teched an ready to go:

I was in the first run group so the course was damp and drying for everyone. By the 3rd run the course was completely dry so you basically had 1 run to get it right for your best time of the day. My 3rd run raw time was good enough for 3rd place, but I coned it dropping me to 5th after day 1.
(Not sure where I hit a cone. I forgot to go and look to see which cone was called on me after my group.)

Sunday was about as perfect as it gets as far as the weather. Look at all that beautiful, dry concrete!

I was able to make up some ground and was sitting in 3rd place after my 2nd run. But everyone else went faster on their third run and I laid down a DNF to end up in 5th place.
I'm having issues with some of the videos from the Hero3, so right now all I have is Hero2 video from day 2.

I have no idea what I'm doing but your runs looked really good to me. There was a couple times in the slalom I was like "Oh snap! That cone was close!". haha.

And the BRC vinyl looks badass. And so nice and straight too!

unlike its owner.

Miata owner burn!?!?!

Thanks Evan.

I messed up a few times on the first run in particular. 0:53, 1:03, and 1:35 were all instances when I wish I would've turned in a little sooner and got closer to the cone(s) on the inside.

I took the BRC vinyl off as soon as I got home, and it came off easily! In fact, I think it was better than my magnets which had all kinds of gunk under them from running in the rain on the first day.

;) hehee

Last weekend Marc, Evan, and I changed the clutch, valve cover gasket, and C.A.S. o-ring on the Miata. This is the only picture that I have but I'm sure Evan got a few more. :)

I can't thank Marc and Evan enough for helping me out. There's no way I would've been able to accomplish this myself and I can only imagine how much easier the lift made things.

I had no idea how bad the clutch was prior to changing it, now the car goes amazingly well. I can't wait to autocross it this weekend. :)

may actually be taking a trip down to NC next week and while Im there im going to pick up a hard dog bar and save me that $85 shipping. want to track this thing!

That's a great plan! They will probably even install it for you. I had a couple of people help, one of which who had done a HD roll bar in a Miata previously, and that made things much easier.

Just make sure you get one that is SCCA/NASA certified. The harness bar is also a nice plus even if you don't have plans to run harnesses in the future you'll still have the option. The downside is in an NA you can't upgrade to a glass window.

well they have the M1 Hardcore hardtop which is the one I plan to get just in case I go for a hardtop one of these days. not sure about the harness option but ill chat them up on the phone. and I do plan to ask if we can install it at their garage while im down there.

The hardtop one sits a little farther back in the car which is nice for using the hardtop, but it's also shorter. So if you're tall like me (6'1") it would be pretty tough to get below the roll bar.

And FWIW, I use a hard top with my non-HT bar and it works just fine. But there is no guarantee that it is going to work every time. Oh, and you can't use the side strikers with the one I have. So I bolt the hard top on the sides.
