The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

It's interesting reading the opinions of those who race/track their cars versus those who don't when it comes to horsepower. Not ridiculing one side or the other but the general impression I'm getting is the guys who race/track generally prefer handling and the ability to put down the power they have and the street guys seem to want more HP. I was definitely in the latter category about four years ago. I've got a friend from school with a twin-turbocharged 4.6L Mustang who likes to go around saying things like "My daily driver is faster than your racecar." Sure, 0-60 mi/hr, but what about around a corner? What about against cars with similar HP/weight ratios? I mean, comparing a twin-turbo V8 street machine to a Spec Miata is pretty assinine.

This is why my street Miata has a turbo. A track Miata would be much better naturally aspirated. On the street though, the increase in power is really useful. It's sad that a minivan can out accelerate a sports car.

Handling is better on a track, power is better on the street. A stiff, low suspension with lightweight wheels and grippy tires doesn't make much sense if you are just driving around on public roads.

I want to go, but it depends on these interviews I have today and the hole in my wallet right now. The MSP looks like crap too, but is still a blast to drive. I need to check the extra set of springs I have at home and see what I need to get from Pablo.

good luck in your interveiws.

I can see the logic in that. It's easier (and somewhat safer) to use that power 0-60 or 0-70 on the street than it is to push the handling capabilities.

I agree. Not to mention the reliability issues of a turbo on a track car. I can accept the added maintenance required of a turbo on the street car but it's not something I'd want to deal with on a track car.

Good. Does that mean people will let up on me about tracking my Miata?

Anybody want to be a nice guy and take a pair of struts from me at Mid-Ohio to deliver to codex?

Exactly what I'm thinking. Although I do hope to get the Miata out for an autocross soon. No where close to being competitive in the class it's in with a turbo, but at least it would be a fun time. That June 9 is too close to the June 10 track day so I'll probably skip that one. Any idea when NORA is going to start hosting autocross again this year?

Sure. Anthony is about 1 mile from my house.

Anthony, why aren't you going to Mid-Ohio? And why can't you do track events in a row?

You have the same kit that I do. You're not getting off easy if I don't get off easy.

Heh... that sounded like a Miata thing to say...

+1 on the Mid-Ohio question.

I'll be in Columbus this weekend if Anthony needs them sooner than Mid-Ohio.

If you could pick them up for me this weekend, that would be awesome.

I'm just lazy and would rather not wake up early on Sunday, especially with a track day the next day. I'll be getting my speed fix in the next day so I'll be less motivated to go to an autocross.

I took vacation the week of June 10 and we are leaving after the track day on Monday. I don't think we'll be back soon enough for the Grand Am race.

lol.. why not use another car for track days? That Bavaria would be a blast on track, or Civic, or ... ?
