Road trip hesterday to Manchester NH with my son and his friend to attend Brickfair 2013. Our day started out great yesterday, made it into Manchester just after 11, found parking and enjoyed Brickfair. The boys were impressed with some of the MOCs (a Lego chess match where the pieces moved via a computer program was one of them along with a huge display of a WWII battle from the Pacific) and bought most of the stuff on their lists. Headed home around 2:30 and they were both wiped and wanted to skip The Razor. That's where the day turned south. As I was on the on-ramp for 15S off of 91S in CT, the car up and died on us at approx 4:45!

I immediately noticed we lost power and the gas pedal wasn't cooperating. The gauge cluster showed the temps were fine but the tach and speedometer were quickly falling and the CEL was lit solid. Popped the hood and everything looked ok from what I could visibly see and all fluids were at full levels (changed the oil on Friday). Called the wife and son's friends mom to let them know, then the State Police followed by my insuracne co. for roadside assistance. Girl verified my info. and estimated the mileage home at 150 miles home which I confirmed from the nav on my phone. After a couple of calls back and forth she said she found a co. willing to tow her home for $500 (only get 16 free miles

) and would be there within the hour. The alternative was to have the wife drive 3hrs to pick us up, 3hrs home, have someone I don't know work on the car and then make the 6hr round trip later in the week...the $500 seemed like a good choice. Until the driver didn't show up until 7ish and thought it was only me to take home. Had to drive back to the shop to swap trucks for one with an extended cab to accomodate the three of us. So we didn't get on the road home until 8:00!!! (argh)
Of course at the shop, the mgr proceeds to tell me that the estimmate of $500 was wrong as the rep told him it was 110 miles where he had it at 150 miles???? As stated above...the girl confirmed with me the mileage of 150 before getting the quote from the co.??? He then says that at their rate of $4.75 a mile it will be well over $600 and wanted to let me know...in case I wanted to change my mind, stay the night in a local hotel and have them look at the car Sunday morning. Sorry but this raised some red flags with me and I'll be contacting the ins. co. tomorrow! And longest 3hr drive home I've ever had..driver was falling asleep and at points along 95S, 87N, 287S and 78W was crossing from slow lane to fast lane and actually hit the guardrail just after we crossed the Tappanzee Bridge! His fiancee was riding along and would poke him from time to time. At several points I was ready to tell him to pull over and drop my car and I'd just make other arrangements. Thankfully we all arrived home safely!!!! I'll be mentioning that to insurance as well!
Got to the mechanics at 11:30 and paid the bill of $769.50 and took our son's friend home and then came home and crashed. Lights, radio worked just fine while we were sitting on the shoulder so I'm thinking fuel pump or timing belt?!
Sorry for the rant and Happy Mom's day to all the mom's out there!!!
