What have you done to your P5 today?

I think a K20 would be a fun swap for the wagon. Too bad people want tons of money for those.

well, I stumbled across the FE DOHC the other day. Not sure if the mounting positions are the same but Wikipedia said they've been able to handle 600 ponies with a turbo and some more mods...

Its kinda going against me thinking of doing the KL swap but its got me thinking. I know torque steer would kill me. And I'd probably need a hella beefy transmission.

What should have taken about 30 minutes, ended up taking an hour and a half. Either this was the factory gasket, or whoever changed it last used WAY too much sealant. I spent a good hour cleaning up the head and cover with a razor blade and brake cleaner. And, as promised, some pictures:

Surprisingly clean I think...

Not so clean...

This is everything that I salvaged from scraping. A lot more sealant got tossed out in the process.

Pretty. Hooray for no sealant needed!!!!!

I'm nervous to change my oil next week. I might have to pull off the oil pan and see what may be lurking in there. :/

Mine looked exactly like that... (the underside of the VC) I gave it a bath and stuff, helped a little. I can smell it now, now just gross. The head was just as dirty too. I can assume you do your oil changes often? I ask b/c mine looked like that and my pal thought it to be b/c the p.o. Skimped out on oil changes...

Where's the blue gasket come from? Mines black and I got it from OMP. Just wondering :)

I had NO sealant on mine, except around where the timing belt section is. Wasn't replaced though, I assume.

I actually haven't had an oil change for about 7,000 miles. I know, bad me. I just got done with an insane semester... which is why the oil is being changed next week. I need to rest a little.

The gasket is from Autozone. I asked for sealant, but the guy said the rubber Felpro gaskets don't need it... even on the timing belt side.

^ I used the same gasket. It heats up and expands. After driving it a while, it will begin seeping out between your head and Valve cover. I changed mine in 30mins and haven't had a problem since

I see...

Just got my belts and gasket. Those go in, I smile :)

So ready to start her up its not even funny!!!

Any tips on doing the timing??? :)

I might order a pass side mm insert- any reviews? I just wanna use it to keep the engine happy for now. Ill upgrade down the line. @ $30, I can swallow that down the line.

That's definitely not the factory installation =/

You're only supposed to apply two pea-sized blobs of sealant near the cam sprockets, not all the way around...

well, I stumbled across the FE DOHC the other day.

I am just surprised at how few motor options there are, but once again I am spoiled, I can throw at least 4 different kinds of motors(SR,CA,KA,RB) all from the same manufacturer with stock mounts into my s13. But the MP5 has like 3 and two of them are pretty much the same motor. Stupid FWD and being harder to swap.

Oh well One day I will figure it out, after I stop all the rust.*cough* yeah right

Looked like this for all of a few minutes. Gotta put fluids in and ill be set. :D the timing belt is rubbing on the cover though... Should I sort that out prior to starting? I think yes, I will. More work though...

I broke a torque wrench (from orileys...) gonna go b**** tomorrow. Adjuster up and broke off and I wasn't even using it for more than a few minutes and a few 10 ft lb turns...

Broke a second valve cover screw too... Can I pick a replacement up from Napa do you think?

Anyone have a pic of how the cams should look @ tdc and how to tell if the pistons at tdc? I put a socket in there and let it get to the highest point. Not sure if that's right?

Anyway, pic then bed for me. God a lot of work done I feel :)

^thanks a bunch :) I'll pick that up today, take off my timing belt cover :/ and hopefully I'll be done!!!

Am I by chance a tooth off on the timing??

Sorry I keep linking to my photos. Im doing this on me phone. So freaking close I am! :)

Looks like it, yes. As you know, the intake gear needs to go counterclockwise a tooth. It will probably bring the other cam with it but as long as they are equal to each other and the crank is still straight you'll be fine. IIRC, the FS I worked on both cams were slightly angled up or down just a little, but as long as they are even it will be okay. Timing belts are a pain but you'll get it. In the 4-5 timing belts I've done none of them have lined up absolutely perfectly with all the teeth and marks. But you'll know right away once you start it up and it's lopey it's off a tooth. But you can still adjust the timing belt pretty easily with the motor still in the car etc.

You're almost there, mate! (2thumbs)

Cheers Lewis! :)

I was about to put the belts on but ill fix that!

My header and pre cat are giving me issues now. Ill start her up and then see what I need to do! Ill try and get a vid cause thisll be monumental for me!
