What have you done to your P5 today?

Discovered all my motor mounts are shot. It's like my car is 10 years old or something. Wait ...

^ Its funny... The pass motor mount happens to be the most expensive one. It also seems like the easiest one to replace -_- my pass one is gone. Not sure about the rest of them though...

I think I'm just going to take a shot in the dark and assume that the upstream O2 sensor is going out and I'm going to replace it. Plus, I'm not sure if it has ever been changed, so it couldn't hurt.

On top of that, I think I have found my oil leak. There seems to be a lot of "gunk" on the top of the head on the corner under the oil cap. I'm going to guess that the valve cover gasket sprung a leak and that's getting replaced too. It's a lot of money for 2 problems, but hopefully it fixes them both and I'll be back to normal MPG's and no burning oil smells.

I'm almost at 200K. I just had the timing belt replaced for the second time. The idler pulley and tensioner bearings for the timing belt were shot and were replaced as well. It was really noisy at idle before, almost sounded like a diesel. Not it sounds like a brand new car. Also, I had to replace the motor mount in front of the lower part of the engine. I first had all of the motor mounts done at 108K- they were all totally shot.

I noticed roughly a 1L/100KM improvement after changing my upstream O2 sensor. That being said, you'll always waste more fuel in the winter so you might just be noticing that.

Ok, help time... my fuel mileage is taking a s*** on me.

Could it be:
-O2 sensor(s) starting to fail? I'm getting a voltage reading that peaks around .8V on what I think is the upstream sensor, but drops down to .1V regularly. It doesn't hold at either. What I think is the downstream sensor seems to hold pretty steady at .7V, but occasionally dips down to .1V. I monitor it on the Torque App.

-A crappy winter fuel blend from the gas station mixed with frigid temps? I haven't really had a problem until the past month or so since the temps have been dropping.

-Catalytic converter getting clogged? There is no hesitation when accelerating from a stop, but when giving her some gas on the highway, she hesitates for a split second after she downshifts into 3rd gear.

There are no idle issues, but seems to make a little bump noise on cold startups. Nothing that sounds wrong, just a bigger burst of fuel maybe? I don't smell any fuel that would lead me to believe there is a leak anywhere (had that problem with my old Protege), but I do think she's burning a little rich due to the soot on the exhaust. Lack of sensors at to the OBDII port don't allow me to monitor fuel flow or pressure or A/F ratios (as I'm sure many of you know).

I'm baffled now... HELP!?!?!?

Just how big of a drop are we talking? 3-5 mpg? Quite possibly just winter gas. Mine always went from 30-32 down to 26-28 with the change of seasons. If it was the primary O2 sensor, you'd be getting like... 16 mpg.

Got the Lift and ramps all setup. After I do brakes on my friend's I30, I am gonna get down on the Mazda and replace some F'n Mounts. It's everything,[motor/trans] shifts SOOOOOOOOOOO much when I let off the clutch. Time to hit up Mazda parts for some much needed shizz, unless you guys have a spot you like to pick up engine and trans mounts or an upgraded[poly} mounts you like.

I am open to suggestions.

I was looking at about 170 miles at half a tank, which is about 30 less than usual. No super aggressive driving and a lot of highway. I'm leaning towards the winter mix now. The exhaust doesn't smell rich at idle... so idk. I'll start with the valve cover gasket on Friday and work my way around from there. Finals are over tomorrow so I can actually get some work done this weekend and over the next few weeks... fingers crossed. I really want to squeeze in another wash and wax on Friday too, seeing as it will probably be our last day near 50*. Oh well. Life goes on either way.

AWR mounts or inserts? The lot of four mounts will run you around $400. I've got side inserts waiting to go in as well as Corksport inserts for the front.

Sounds to me like winter gas is your enemy. I notice a similiar drop in the winter as Phen mentioned above. Good idea to go ahead and replace the vc gasket though but I'd hold off on the O2 sensor.

nice drive to work today!
i have a much more "spirited" drive to work now that i'm 20 mins closer. i get up at the same time and have less traffic so i got into boost a lot this morning. with 160k on the clock and an autotragic tranny, she still goes well at 6psi!

One of those great perks from selling the house. ;) You still take the same route with less traffic or more back roads now?

Hmmmmmm, maybe an engine swap before you send her to the scrap yard? And yes the whole engine....yours is much cleaner than mine after all. ;)

Wired the summer feature up on my headunit. waited on my parts.

Thinking of just calling TRS up and ordering over the phone. Wanna get my lights in over break :)

Just realized, all I have left to do is put the belts on, reattach the throttle cable and body, put fluids in her, and start her up! :)

Hoping still that my first piston rings are specced correctly...

I'm borrowing a friends truck tomorrow to drive up to Annapolis to FINALLY pick up my Gemini RC hood!!!! Took Greyhound almost 2 months to find the damn thing but I don't care because I'm finally getting it.

Anyone have an opinion on Full-on AWR Mounts vs. inserts? I want to know that spending the extra is gonna be better. Or are they just stiffer than the inserts. If not I can ask them before I buy.

for the most part it comes down to how much vibration you want in your car. Brand new oem mounts and inserts are great, especially if your car is a dd anyways. Solid motor mounts are 'better' since they reduce wheel hop, wont deteriorate or break as fast, less engine lash, and it may feel more responsive. inserts will do the same things i just mentioned but at a lesser degree since the mount will be softer.

Cool, I'll probably just get the two mounts and the inserts. and I can always get the others later.

I think a should also do the Escape AWD v6 front endlink dealie.

I thought the mazda Proteges would have alot more options for suspension and motor parts, but I guess I have been spoiled by the 240world.

I think a K20 would be a fun swap for the wagon. Too bad people want tons of money for those.

Yeah, that's what I decided I'm going to do. I don't feel like dumping $100 into something that might not be the issue. I'm getting started soon on the gasket. I'll take some pics for everyone and we can see what it looks like under that cover. Knowing the luck I've had with cars, there will probably be something tragically wrong with it that was barely holding together with the cover on. I guess we shall see.

you can get both sensors for less than 100 IIRC
