Is it just me or are there a lot of Protege "build" threads popping up on the forums that really aren't "builds" at all. I'm not poking fun at cheap/broke high school and college kids but 7 years ago when I got into the game (and in college) bolting on an intake and/or exhaust didn't really constitute a "build."

Truth, Jon! I remember when the "Build Threads" were reserved for the serious builds, like your red P5. Now everyone has a build thread with an intake and updated with "I plasti-dipped _______ today.". Lulz.
I think Protege's are cheap now and more younger cats can afford them. They are becoming Honda Civics from back in the day. Speaking of Civics, try finding a clean EG or EK model that isn't riced out. Sad.

I would think something a little more involved than "I bolted on an intake today" or "I bolted on an exhaust today" or as Evan put it "I plasti-dipped ____ today." I'm not saying that everything has to be custom like Brian MP5's project but you'd think a "build" would actually involve building something (e.g. engine, transmission, car, interior, etc.). It's kind of like saying you did an audio build when you just swapped out the factory speakers for new ones.
Did I even have a build thread for the Protege5? I know I didn't really post anything other than pictures until I turbocharged it and even then it wasn't anywhere near as involved as my RX-7. Maybe we're just getting old? I used to see "Build Thread" and think, "Awesome, something to read while bored at work," but now there's only a few that are interesting. It doesn't even have to be a performance build like your P5 or my RX-7 either. I recall one guy doing a really clean audio build in his Mazda5 a while back that was interesting.
I hear ya for sure I'm just messin' around. A build to me means that there is some goal with the project and it will eventually end. Most people's build threads seem to just be journals about their car. Which I think there is nothing wrong with at all! But I agree with you that Brian and Evan's threads are the definition of builds!
I feel like a double d-bag for having two "build" threads. lulz.
But I agree, Jon. I love reading "build" threads, learning new tricks and parts to use, research, pics and the experiences/stories the "builder" has along the way. Those threads are kinda hard to find now... Yeah, I'm getting old. haha

I can agree with that, however, some builds have a goal, but happen over a very long time.
Also, I know some people that don't have an end goal, and there is never an end. They just keep going for more power, and more power, and address the next problem in their way as they go.

Yeah, it's funny when I read in Modified mag or a build thread that a car is "done". Really? I don't think I would ever be "done" with a project car. Even my stupid, slow, FWD wagon will continue to grow and cost me more money. haha
I'm just posing this as a question for consideration:
How much regular vehicle maintenance can be counted as part of your build? What about when you use the maintenance as an excuse for replacing with better or modified parts?
I.E. Dropped a driveshaft, replaced with aftermarket lighter/stronger?

I say that counts! Somethings I can see going both way. Changing spark plugs/ coil packs for Nology hot wires or something like that. But changing the timing belt doesn't really constitute a build thread IMHO.

I have 2 build threads that are not anything close to true builds. I used build for lack of a better word as most people seem to do. Come to think of it I should just delete them since there is nothing happening or going to be happening to either of the cars anyway.
I look forward to eating some deer when I come out to Pittsburgh in December.
Sorry my thread is kinda lame and dead, but I can't really do any of the fun stuff until spring and summer when it is warmer out. I still need to finish Jess's scoop for her smart. I already feel bad for taking so long, but my area that I work in is just to cold for the resign to cure right.
No hurry man lol.
Hopefully I see some deer this weekend... going down to Zaleski and camping out. Last year I saw no deer... not one.
