Does the Mazda 5 make you more of a risk taker on the road ?

I can personally testify that the 5 makes me a lot more of a risk taker. Why does it's handling have to be so good, that i forget that I am in a mini-mini -van. I begs me to drive it like a wild man and to push it harder than I should. Why does it's corning and turning radius inspire so much confidence? I love my 5, but I am not sure it makes me a more cautious driver. How about you guys?

Courious, what car did you come from?

It does not have enough high end grunt to make me want to take risks, I have to drive passive aggressive and there's usally passengers onboard. Taking a fast hairpin is a lot less likely to get a ticket and a lot more fun then speeding down the highway!

I came from driving a 1500 silverado and a mini-van. Both of their driving dynamics sucked. Yeah, upgrading the suspension is on the check list, and when i do, I will really be off the chain.

That is the best part of owning any mazda, for the way they handle around turns, I could care less about blowing some guy in a mustang off the line from a red light. I know that the 5 doesn't handle like the RX-8, but it handles better stock than some compact cars I have driven in the past, I can only imagine how good it would handle with an upgraded suspension. It's handling is what makes me blow caution to the wind.

It is nice to be confident that your vehicle will be able to perform when you need it to.

I really enjoy the upgraded and upsized Michelin Primacy's, and the Koni FSD suspension!

I also really enjoy watching somebody in my rear view mirror realize that they are not able to take that curve or onramp at my pace... :)

LOL! you should upgrade the suspension, then see what happens ;)

YES! :D

Less grunt = need to carry more speed = just don't brake (go fast). :D Having driven quite a few performance cars in anger and also having a properly balanced S2000 as a daily driver, I can say that the 5 handles extremely well from the factory for what it is. Once you have better damping underneath it and some stiffer springs, the 5 feels WAY better!

I can agree to that but for different reasons. #1 reason for poor MPG is due to the fact that you drive :D. #2 reason is due to braking! For every MPH you loose from braking , you need to waste gas to make up for it :p

I've been DD the Fit and comparing stock to stock, I prefer the Mz5 dynamics overall. But I'm avg 33MPG (can get higher) with the Fit vs 24 MPG (can get higher) out of the Mz5 on my commute so money talks.

Yup. My MZ5 gets pretty abysmal gas mileage the way we drive it- but that's because it's foot on the floor most of the time.

At least you admit that you have a lead foot. money does talk in the form of mpg's. Unfortunately, the zoom-zoom philosophy begs us to drive them hard. There are a lot other cars out there that get better mpg's, but they are just a dreadful bore to drive. I enjoy my daily commute with my Mazda's, I can't say I have in the past with other vehicles.

Lead foot is nothing to be ashamed of- I see speed limits as suggestions. :) When you drive as many miles as I do every year, you tend to try and shorten your trips as much as possible. As for the 5, I don't have to drive it too conservatively to get decent gas mileage, and the amount of money I save by babying it isn't worth the lack of fun- basically, it's not worth it to try and squeeze out 25mpg on a fully loaded highway trip when I can go a LOT faster and still get 22-23. Now my truck will go from 22mpg highway down to about 14mpg if I lead-foot it, so that's a HUGE difference.
