The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

After going through the HPDEs, I'd like to enter TT so I classed my car to see where I'd land with the mods I have and what else I could get away with. I've been looking at the times and the cars placing them to see what I'd be up against, and it's not pretty. If I were to enter TT right now, I'd be in with Bill. If I were to get Hoosiers like he has, I'd be either pretty close or over points, which puts me in TTC (a faster group).

With the mods you currently have or plan on having? But all that's in a couple years anyway though, right? Did Bill sell his MSP? I thought I saw that somewhere?

That would be pretty sweet if you were racing TT though. :)

He is interested in selling it, but not really actively looking yet, eventually wants to move to a 370. I want to run as many autoxs this year as I can, and if things go well I'll go through HPDEs next year. If things go well with that I might try to get into TT by then end of 2013 or early 2014. And yes, it's with the car as it is now plus the catback and the larger FMIC. I can get away with a decent size tire (235) within the points allowed in TTD, and with 245 in TTC but how sticky they are is what would get me.

I can't get an ECU and larger injectors since I wouldn't pass emissions, and that would really kick me into TTC. I don't plan (as of yet) to go nutso-fucko and have a 300 WHP miata, which implies a better turbo, at that point I'd consider getting a different car to race

And everyone hates on classing by specific modifications instead of points...

And in autocross classing, would you have an MSP and MSM with the same modifications in the same class? The point system works and I feel it is superior because there will always be one best car if all of them have to do the same modifications. With points, you fix your car's specific weaknesses and the playing field gets leveled. The MSM is a better platform than a Protege so it is 2/3 of a class higher in base class, it is also classed 240 lbs lighter. So the difference between the two is about the amount of points for a set of Hoosiers. That's not unreasonable.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying one is better than the other, but a lot of people like to act like points is the end all be all. They both have their deficiencies, and I understand why building to points works for some people and why building to mods works for others. Though I'm not really sure where you'd have a Miata and a Protege (MSP or otherwise) in the same class, at least as far as the SCCA is concerned.

The problem for track events is that if you class by modifications you need the 600 classes (that number may be off) classes that Solo has. Or you can limit to a certain type of car, like how IT has only small econobox type of cars. The points works as a sort of PAX to limit the number of classes you need while allowing competitors to modify the type of car they want by the amount they choose. It's a way to avoid the problem that you see in most regional autocrosses where a bunch of classes have only one driver in them.

And Mazda using a stock block 2.2 skyactiv-d in the new GX class. Are they done in the gt class then? but more important, will we see a street version 6 with skyactiv-d?

per my connection in Grand-Am, the car will be unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November ...................

Welp, I officially have one running car again. White Miata is my sister's track toy now. :) Now I have more money for the green one >:D

I'm pretty sure that Evan (P5 ~100hp) and Ivan (MS3 ~3x as many hp) were both in SMF. Sounds like taking a knife to a gun fight to me. I don't think there is a good way to class cars.

I found this interesting, mazda-mx-5-miata based-2014-alfa-romeo-roadster/

Late to the show man! Alfa is only using the chassis. They're supposed to use their own engine for the Alfa, and Mazda will use whatever engine they have slated for it. Frankly, I'm digging the way the Alfa looks and would probably chase after one of those before the new MX5.

You are only allowed to run a production car one year after it ceases production in GT class. RX-8 is dead, so this is the last year they are allowed to run it.

Not necessarily. Depending on the course, the only thing the MS3 would possibly have over the P5 would be the acceleration. You can make a P5 handle just as well, if not better than an MS3... and a lot has to do with the weight. The right driver, the right tires, and the right course, a P5 can take an MS3 auto-xing.

Mazda hasn't announced when the diesel engine will be available in the US or in what car...yet.

I'm excited about the Alfa/Mazda announcement because it is the first official word regarding the next generation Miata (ND). I've been looking forward to the ND for a couple years now,it will be exciting to see actual concepts from each manufacturer.

GX class ND Miata with a turbo diesel? :D I'm disappointed to see the RX-8 done in Grand-Am. :(

Exactly. My best time at the end of the day was 3 seconds faster than Evan's and that was without counting the cone I hit. That was probably the longest and fastest course that we will end up running. Horsepower isn't nearly as important as suspension and more importantly, driver mod. Right now, I'm a novice driver and it shows. I'm sure someone could have got a way better time on that course in my car.

I just went out to have fun and I was probably the slowest car out there of any class. But I'm hooked for sure. I just can't believe I didn't start doing this stuff sooner. Thanks to Josh, Marc, Levi and Phen for the kick in the pants. (2thumbs)

^ you crackers should sign up for the potential Karting enduro im trying to set up...

its not in your car, but it will be some fun seat time to help the driver mod as well
