The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Done student teaching! Graduation tomorrow! Sad to leave Wadsworth, though. There are a slim few openings in the area. If anyone knows of any place that will hire a guy with a teaching degree and/or history degree, let me know--because finding a job in teaching in Ohio is going to be about a .0001% chance at this point.

Congratulations! Good luck finding a job. My mom just lost her teaching job :( but she is an art teacher and they seem to be the first to go so hopefully it will be easier for a history teacher.

17x 7. and its 16lbs. I forget the offset.

That is a fantastic deal. If I hadn't just bought a brand new set for my Speed3 I'd be all over this.

Thanks guys! Bill, you are down to one semester left, right?

And Will, the main problem is History is slowly declining--there is a movement to make history an elective class so that it can be cut out of curriculum altogether, much like art and music programs. Math, science, and english are the core components in today's education.

I just applied for a 1/2 day Social Studies Teacher, 1/2 day Athletic Director for a high school about 20 minutes from my house. That would probably be the perfect job for me...

I'm taking 6 credits in the summer and then 16 in the fall to finish up. Then I need to take the BAR in February and find a job. For the summer I'm also working in one of my professors' law firm that specializes in patents and I'm pretty excited about it.

Make history an elective...that seems crazy! Good luck with the job application.

I'm all for math and science, being that sort of guy, myself, but that's honestly one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. History already has a negative connotation with the younger crowd because the attitude is, "man, that's dumb, why do I gotta lern bout a bunch of dead dudes that did stuff I don't even care about. I don't give a crap, I'm too cool to care about history."

And yet, if we don't learn and study history, we are doomed to repeat it. I sincerely hope this is not the beginning of the decline of this great country.

you mean this country isnt already on a decline????

History has it's own channel, how can it not be cool? math and science don't have that. Maybe the Discovery channel for science but it also has some history. History should definitely be apart of any core curriculum. I could go into more detail/rambling but I've had a couple tonight so I'm just gonna call it a night

Haha, thanks for all the support guys!

I'll try to explain it a little better, and then I will be done moaning about my troubles and move on. Basically, you all probably had to take some form of a test to graduate high school. In Ohio, we had the 9th grade proficiency test, which later became the 10th grade Ohio Graduation Test. Next year, 2011-2012, the Ohio graduation test is being deleted. No new test has taken its place yet. There is suspicion that perhaps the SAT or ACT will just become the next standardized test to be given to all high school students in Ohio. Now think back to the SAT and ACT: Writing, Math, Science, and English--NO SOCIAL STUDIES section. In terms of the classroom, this means that history no longer becomes as important as those other subjects since students will not be held accountable for it on a national test. Therefore, it is no longer part of the core curriculum. Even now you only need 3 units of Social Studies to graduate compared to 4 English, Science and Math credits in most schools. Again, this is just speculation, but something that could probably happen in the next year or two.

Anyways, back to your normal, random Ohio thread!

There actually is a Science Channel. There isn't a math channel yet unless you count PBS.

Congrats on graduating Chippy. Good luck with the job quest, arew you going to try and stay local or are you going to look out of state as well?

Hehe... My TV is always on History, Discovery or Science channel.. None of that reality stuff except Ax Men because they film some of those guys from my home area down in FL. I've already seen a few places I recognize on that show.

The Count is only on at certin times, I wouldn't call it a math channel yet. What's this science channel? I must not get it with basic cable

And Congrats Chippy! forgot to post that earlier

Yeah I didn't know about it till I got Dish up here. I didn't know if SquareONE was still on tv or any of those shows they use to have on PBS.

Exactly! Plus, even though my background is engineering, history was always one of my favorite subjects.

Better explanation! While I still think the whole idea is stupid in general this at least paints a better picture from the administration side of things as far as understanding why they are doing it.

Finally got the Nology plug wires installed today. Turned out pretty good. Well, good enough for a parts guy anyway. ha ha ha
