Team Ohio rust repair! (56K die)

Hmmmm...well in that case Maaco quoted me $100. :D hahahahahaha Will have the quote from Maaco later and I left a message earlier with another shop in town but haven't confirmed if they do rust repair. I'm sure the quote they give me won't be written in stone as demonstrated by your pics in the first post but I'm going to ask and also see what kind of warranty they may offer.

No updates on the rust-mobile, but I have another job that's basically the same process...

'11 VW GTI. T-boned...gets 2 doors and the center pillar/part of rocker replaced.

Same process as rust though, just less messy! Drill or grind the welds down, remove damaged part, clean up the metal, weld new panel on!

The rocker came in today for the F-150, I'm going to try and get it welded in tomorrow.

And here's a breakdown on the estimate, for s***'s and giggle's. They wound up hitting the guy up for another $700 or so...

7 hrs to put the new rocker in, 5hrs on each of the 3 doors that need patched, 1hr on the clean door, 6hrs repair on the passanger side rocker, includes patching that hole in the cab corner, 1.5hrs to remove and install the running boards (not pictured because I already took them off) and a few small random charges, like to seam seal the doors and .5 to remove the passanger front door panel and see/fix what was rattling inside the door.

33 hrs body labor X $44/hr (shop's body labor rate) = $1452
10.5 hrs paint labor X $44/hr (paint labor rate) = $462
10.5 hrs for paint supplies X $26/hr (material rate) = $273

Plus sales tax, parts (after a 25% mark up!) etc. The new total is $3065!!! Again, I don't know who the hell has $3000 to spend on a job like this. Guy really loves his truck! lol

I'd do it for my Miata, but that's cause I love this car. As for the truck... Maybe it has sentimental value..

Damn, he really does love that truck! My estimate at Maaco came back at $930....16hrs of body labor and $400 for paint. Guy was very nice and explained the steps they would take for each area of the car (strut tower in engine bay, RR qtr panel, and the ends of the rocker panels on each side. Of course no warranty and I wasn't too crazy about the following note: No blending, best color match possible. Not as much as I feared yet money I just don't have laying around.

You won't find a body shop that will give much of or any warranty on rust repair. Not too good for business when you are doing free warranty work. My dad spent too many years in the body business, and I have seen it all. Jeff, Maaco is famous for cheap paint jobs because they don't blend anything, that is an up charge to "premium" paint service.

I mean, I can understand if it's a good, reliable truck, and he doesn't have the money for a new one. Why not put a little bit in it now to keep it looking good for a few more years while he continues to drive the wheels off payment free.

I'm just biased because I know it's nearly impossible to get rid of this much rust. The average Joe doesn't know any better. Hell, even the owner and manager don't have a damn clue, and my shop has been in business since 1947!!!! While I was showing them how bad the bottoms of the doors were, and explaining that I won't be able to get 100% of the rust cleaned up, their response was "Well, we just don't want him coming back in a year or anything because it's rusting again" I was like...you've got to be ******* kidding me?? That right there tells me that when it does come back, they're going to warranty it. I can only hope I'm not around by that time...lol

Economy!! lol

You can get the full treatment at a Maaco, but like hat said, it's all more money. People have this negative impression that Maaco's just hack stuff up and does bad work, and they do to a point, but it's only because that's all the customers are paying for! They're a full service collision shop as well. They can do it all, it's just that they built their reputation on cheap body work.

If you're going to get it fixed right don't go to Macco. Spend a little extra cash and it"l go a long way. Like he said you get shat you paid for. Just because it's cheap doesn't make it a. better value. The main reason their paint doesn't last is because the car isn't preped for paint properly. Either it wasn't scuffed in areas it needed or is masked off in a hurry to get it in and out. Macco is a good way to turn a car around and sell it quick. Otherwise the paint doesn't stick to the surface correctly for more than a year or two. Especially when putting some milage on them.

Have you ever read their disclaimer/fine print? It's hilarious! All kinds of stuff about what is and isn't included...

Upcharge, upcharge, upcharge. By the time they get done with up charges the price is comparable to the shop that was thought to be to expensive. That cheap price is just to get people in the door.

Updates!

WHY ALL THIS RUST WILL BE BACK!!! You just can't get behind/inside/around all the panels...

I wasn't going to use the whole rocker section, but after trying to clean up this part of the original rocker, it turned into a big hole...so I had to remove the fender to install the whole thing.

Lil extend-a-patch...

I wound up gluing the majority of the rocker on. I didn't want to gut half the interior to pull the carpet back enough to use the resistance spot welder, plus I wouldn't have gotten paid for that! It's bad enough I didn't get paid to take the doors off, which took me over an hour because Ford sucks and doesn't like to use plugs for the wiring harness.

And the door bottoms came in today. Not really what I expected, but they'll work. I was expecting just a flat sheet of metal with a little fold on the bottom, not half a door skin.

Well, I wasn't expecting a warranty as I know the rust can and will come back eventually. I'm just looking to keep her on the road for a few more years, considering I have an FSDE under the hood it would suck for rust to be the reason she has to come off the road. lol Thanks Larry, I didn't know that abou Maaco and wonder what the 'upcharge' would be to have it blended in those areas???

So far Maaco is the only shop that I've found that will do rust repair. I called several local shops yesterday and they all said 'NO'. I've heard some bad things about their quality of paint over the years but in my case it would only be in the areas they are fixing with the quarter panel being the most noticeable. I haven't committed and going to call around and see if I can find someone else that will take a look so I can compare.

How far up the replacement skin do you plan to use? Would you do a butt weld or a lap weld and then use a bit of filler?

Why not have Maaco do the rust and then have a more reputable shop paint it?

Well, it's not the right skin for these doors, they're for a regular cab door so the body lines don't match. The very bottom of them look like they'll work though, so I'm only going to cut off about 1" of it, maybe less. Probably try and overlap it. It's a BIG waste to do it this way, but the shop doesn't seem to care since they're charging the guy $105 ea for these panels. Pfft...

And the total bulls*** deal for me is, if there was a dent that stretched from edge to edge of a panel this size, it would easily be worth 5 hours in itself. But with this job, I'm expected to clean all the rust off the inside of the shell, cut the bottom of the skin off, clean up the INSIDE of the shell, cut/trim/fit the replacement skin piece, weld that in...probably warp the s*** out of a panel that big/long, unless I want to take 4 hrs tacking it here and there to keep heat down, then fold the edge over the shell, then do all the filler work on the outside AND inside since the inside is all pitted and has holes in it, and finally seam seal it. All that happy horseshit for 5 hours. And I have to do that 3 times.....I hate my job.

Not too much today, just made a patch for the passanger cab corner and welded it in.

Came out freaking sweet if I don't say so myself! haha

You can see the curves and bends in the piece...

Used this. It's filled with buckshot beads....kind of some Jesse James pound out a gas tank type stuff. lol

Thanks! The passanger rocker is pretty much the only part of the job where I'm coming out ahead. lol 6 hours on it and I'll probably have less than 3 total.

Been busy getting the car going every night lately, but here are some updates that happened in the middle of last week.

Finished off the rockers/cab corner

Door repair. You can see how bad the shell is once this section of skin is off.

All welded in. Warped the s*** out of the door, but I just beat in the high spots and bondoed it end to end. Came out nice...plus it gets rocker guard as well.
