The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Oh, good morning Ohioans. How was everyone's weekend?

a couple of things broke this weekend, my wireless router and a clamp from the SRI

had to get a cheapo to replace while I talk to corksport

On the plus side, I wore shorts to work today (and sandals)

Thanks for the help guys! I appreciate and am going to need all the help I can.

Phen- Evan is shooting over tomorrow after work, if you wanted to just ride with him?

Productive!!

How was mid Ohio for everyone? Amazing weather for it!

Can't, golf league starts tomorrow. I'll just wait for the text messages asking what some funky thing that no one's ever seen before is... Hahaha.

Need some input/opinions...

I was all set to order a motor this morning. Found a place that imports low mileage motors from Japan, compression and leak down tests them, test the oil pressure, sludge check and then final overall inspection. 6mo unlimited mileage warranty, for $970 shipped.

Then, I'm browsing through all the warranty fine print, and there's a laundry list of do's and don'ts or else it would void the warranty. They want you to do a complete tune up which includes timing belt, front and rear main seals, every gasket on the motor, swapping everything over from your motor, etc. If it overheats, it's not covered, amongst other failure scenarios. Plus, I have to pay to ship it back...just all kinds of WTF. Oh, and they said that they do NOT guarantee that the motor is from Japan OR that it has low mileage. Just that they "try to get the lowest mileage possible".

Option 2 is local yards. There's 2 around hat have motor assemblies. One has 93k and the other around 100k on the over side though. Both want between $900-$1000. I'm sure they come with some kind of warranty, and I could just go pick it up whenever. Plus, they would be more likely to come with some of the stock parts I might be needing, as opposed to just a long block assembly from the online place. And if there's a problem, again, they're local so I just take a ride up there.

Thoughts?

First suggestion... Don't go JDM motor for these. It's an appealing thought, and the power levels are a bit higher, but you'll never get that thing e-check compliant. If you wanted the extra amount of power from an FS-ZE, it's almost less hassle to just do an OBD2 KL-DE swap in it. My suggestion would just be to try to find a local FS-DE (get on Evan about hurrying up with his swap) and just do whatever bolt-ons that would make you happy. Less headache all around.

lawl...

At least I made it home.

No, I had a blast this weekend and can't wait to do it again assuming the car's not done for the year.

Glad you made it home man. Did the buzzer keep going off the whole way?

I'm not at all concerned about extra power, short of mild bolt ons just because I like Modding lol. I just want/need this thing to be reliable and last me a few years.

I shudder at the thought of these failed auto techs That literally rip and tear these motors out of salvaged cars, put them on a pallet, and say..."here you go". But again, as long as there was some sort of warranty, I guess there's less of a concern there.

Surprisingly, no. The entire time I was on the highway it was silent. It was only when I got off I71 to hop over to I75 that it came on a few times, but once I was on I75 it didn't come on at all. I filled it up some more last night and got a few more bubbles out of the system. Drove it to work this morning with no buzzer but it did start a little rough and to me it sounds a little strange. No smoke or anything though and there doesn't seem to be any power loss.

that's good, should give you some peace of mind while you check it out

Josh, don't buy anything until I come over tomorrow, buddy. I don't want you to waste any money, especially buying a new/used motor. Be patient and wait till tomorrow. I'll tell you all I know about the P5 and the FS-DE/ZE and KL-DE/ZE and I'm sure I'll be sending a few texts to Phen for verification. haha! Josh, you should start a build thread and we can all help you out in there.

Levi, I take it the Koni install didn't go well this weekend?

Jon, glad you made it home okay, buddy. The thought of a breakdown at the track always worries me too, and I don't even run!

Nate, you should make an air diverter like Bill Brees and now Marlon has. He had some cooling issues this weekend because of his front mount. Sucks about the bolt, gotta read the fine print! I know I almost made the same mistake when Pablo and I replaced the head gaskets on the KL.

koni install went smoothly, its the s*** thats happened after the koni's were installed that hasnt gone my way....

its leading to another $200+ in parts coming from onlinemazdaparts.com and officially killed my hopes of making the Mitty...

Did you have any issues on your last run? I remember you had a startup issue and some popcorn in the exhaust lol.
