God damn it, Maybe the Rework k04 was not the way to go, was out side digging up some ice an moving the cars around and all of a sudden my driveway looks like a GRAY smoke show, I back the car up and there are oil dropplets on the ground and there is oil in the tailpipe... UG,

OK well check again lastnight, and the Idle is only 850!!! I called my tuner to see if he can raise it tomorrow am( FN hour Drive for me).. Interesting drive this am, I always let me car warm up, Drive was full of smokle and inside the car smelled like a burn oil can,(Heat was running). Can I put in thicker weight oil, Only need it to stop smoking for a few days.. I think I'm out.. Can not justify spending 2k on a ATP turbo+ install and intake=$2500+ to have the rods go down the road, Rather take the $2500 and go back to Infiniti( G37s Coupe) So this may start as a Cobb AP sale. Too. :/...

I guess the K04 is not worth reworking. It is best to start out with a different unit. I'm sorry that it didn't work out for you.(sadbanana)

damn man I'm sorry to hear that, that freaking sucks. I doubt its blamed on the idle issue, but had you set it higher before and then it got changed to 850?

Low idle shouldn't make a difference on a turbo that isn't supposed to smoke, if the seals are corrected, idle should be no issue. Get your money back from PG dude, there's no excuse and that's just bad business if they make a claim that's false so quickly. Atleast call them or e-mail them and see what your options are because I for one would be PISSED.

Thanx guys, I am pissed!! Money back , Thats wont happen bought it on here, from a memeber.. I am having the idle raised to 950 -Emailing a log to my tuner( Not really sure how that works) and will be thowing in so 5-40 oil. We'll see just so I can get it to stop smoking so I can trade it in.

Sorry to hear about your smoke. Have you considered simply swapping the K04 for the BNR unit and getting a retune? Are you sure the smoke is from the turbo and not the PCV system?
All the other crap that seems to be a source of smoking - I'd be curious if it's really the seals in the K04 or not. You running a catch can?

So you are just gonna let the next potential Mazda owner suffer with this problem? That is screwed up. On another note, how many miles did the turbo have when you bought it? I've been having my reworked for over 30k miles on top of the 10k miles the turbo had on it already w/o problems.

Well the turbo smoke issue plays hand in hand with the PCV system... it's all about the difference in pressures mated with the crappy seals our turbo's have. The reworked turbo however is supposed to have had that issue addressed.

I've been casually following the smoking turbo threads for awhile here. I thought I recall reading the re-builders who work the K04's for Ken don't typically find anything wrong with the seals? I believe the same was said by Brian at BNR but don't know for sure. Obviously using a ball bearing center section rules it out from happening again. The pressure differential pushes the oil past a seal with even the slightest wear, correct? And once it's hot enough to coke up, it really FUBARs the seal, correct?

And MSprotegy - you running a catless DP RP or not?

ok to answer the questions , No I do not have a catch can, The turbo had 8k on it when I bought it( I was told), I have put about 6k on it or so.. I also was under the impression the the reworked units would not smoke.

BNR + retune =$1800-$2000, Money I do not want to spend on it, reason why I went Reworked, But may have shot myself in the foot going used. All tho, I put more than I handful of 14B's on my DSM's and freinds DSM's went and ran them for years and no issues.

Your logic sounds right to me. I've also read though that the seals on our K04's aren't of typical specifications... idk exactly what that meant I think it was just in the design they were flawed. So even if a re-builder sees nothing wrong with the seals, by design they may still leak oil through. Needless to say our turbo when looking to upgrade shouldn't be considered, my plans are to get the BNR when funds allow.

Catless 3" dp ftw. I also have all the measures to stop any smoking issues. From the ptp pill to a SM OCC. I smoked once due to having the car lifted from the front(while changing the oil) I turned on the car and reved the car and it started to smoke. Other than that not even one small cloud of it.

how much are you gonna get charged for a re-tune??? BNR stage 1 which is pretty much equivalent to reworking the k04 is $950... my re-tune down here would be less than $500... you have some crazy prices brah.

Yeah well there's the rub. You already invested in the tune and the used turbo. Now it's smoking and you're out the dough for both.
Deciding when to holdum and when to foldum is your call.

I wonder if BNR could use / would accept the ported K04 as a core?

You might be best off finding a stock K04 from a yard and going back to stock before unloading it.

Yeah ask Bryan over there if you can send in that one as a core, that might work. But then also remember the smoking issue doesn't really affect performance... atleast in the stock case, with the rework who knows.

Ken at pg used to sale these turbos for a while. I think they had fitment issues with the speed3.

I will shot Brian an email, Hope he replies this time. LOL I just saw this ??

Hence the availability of the 3" TIP from ATP for this car. This has been around for quite awhile.
I know nothing about fitment issues with it personally.

If the deal works out with BNR I would still want to remove the TMIC and check for oil.
Finding out where the oil is coming from is obviously key.

I do not have a TMIC, I'm fully bolted and tuned for the reworked,,(SIG) I just called Bryan and left a voicemail. I will PM him also,,

Oil is definetly coming from the turbo ,I pulled to O2 sensor and it was cover with oil. I also just put in 5-40W oil and my tuner sent me a update tune map with the idle changed to 950. WOW was easy to save to my AP and install, I'm a NOOB with the AP but was pretty painless..
The Turbo looks like an option for $950 depending on what my installer wants and what a exteranal gate and piping cost, We'll see..
