I decided to try a little smoke photography last night. I had an awful lighting setup so instead of crisp shots I got more of an aurora borealis effect. Still cool though...at least I think so...

what was your lighting setup?

Ummm. Embarrassed to say...(sad1)

Two floor lamps pointed downwards and a Craftsman huge flashlight (one of those that runs on the rechargeable power-drill batteries) pointing from the right hand side towards the incense stick.

Last night I broke out the giant halogen shop light so we'll see how those turn out. I'll post them up here when I'm done PP'ing them.

do you have an external flash for your camera?

I think I have you beat. I was using toilet paper as an on-camera flash diffuser over the weekend.

(no, it didn't work very well)

I also used one of the woman's makeup compacts to try to bounce flash. Also with mixed success.

very cool indeed! better lighting is always a bonus but think you can work with what you posted.. play around with the "lights" and "noise reduction" sliders in LR3...
