NEMOC Random BS Thread

Kyle - My thoughts on snows... how many days during the winter is there actually enough snow ON THE ROAD to make you NEED snows. I've never had snow tires, only all seasons. Maybe if you lived in Alaska and snow never left the road, I would get snow tires. They're pretty good around here about getting snow off the road. I think you'd wear down snow tires a lot quicker than you'd like running them on dry or wet-but-not-snow-covered roads.

It is a misconception that snow tires are only good in snow but in reality most snow tires are actually "winter tires". All tires become hard and stiff in cold weather and we all know that cold tires have less traction. Winter tires have a softer compound that is optimized for cold weather and the tire pattern enhances their traction in snow.

IMO Blizzaks are an over rated tire for the money. The snow tire compound is worn at or under 10k miles.

I agree. Blizzaks are good for people that live in Canada and Alaska. They are not suited for most people that live in New England, and especially not the performance car enthusiast. They are designed to be driven 2 or 3 winters and on the last winter you drive them year round and buy a new set the next winter. So basically people that have blizzaks drive on different sets of them year round depending on how much they are worn. You are wasting your money if you never intend to drive on them in the summer.

FYI, if anyone is looking for some MS6 snow tires, I just did a quick search on craigslist...

They are over priced since the wear markers show that you'd get at best 1-2 seasons out of them. Maybe worth $250-300. I'd buy them for myself but I've got one season left on my current Dunlop Wintersports and since we're about to move I really don't think the wife would appreciate another set of tires, especially when we're trying to unload the Nitro snow tires.

Almost exactly what I posted. ;)

Must be just softer compound at the tread? Because the blizzaks that Gary got have a very stiff sidewall.

Hi guys and girls....been busy....first time I've logged on in a few days....

Kyle....should you decide to forego the snow tires for all-seasons....be sure to look at both the Conti Extreme Contact DWS and the Goodyear Eagle GT. I was considering both before finally deciding on the Conti Extreme Contact DW. Both are supposed to provide better snow/winter traction than your traditional all-seasons...

Yes, sidewall compound and tread compound are two different things, and sidewall stiffness is entirely separate from compound. Sidewall stiffness has more to do with cords/belts than rubber compound.

man i wish i had a nice camera!!

would snow tires be kind of a waste on me and wear out quick if i do around 300+ miles per week? or should I pick up some all seasons to use for the winter on my stockers. really on the fence right now. i know snows would be awesome but i dont want to wear them out in a winter or two
You'd want to buy performance snows, in that case.... regular snows too soft... I ran on Pirelli SnowSport 210 snow tires doing 60 miles per day and they wore out to a too-low-for-snow depth in about 25K, which I thought was good, given the abuse I heaped upon them.

My sister and my mother both have these and like them alot on their mercedes.
I had a pair of Contisport2s on the MS6 for a while. Got them new from a guy who took them off his GTI (he wanted all-seasons). The wear was pretty good (got about 20-25K miles out of them, could have pushed for 30k but i got a flat). They were also pretty quiet...something I can't claim about my Pirelli Pzero neros that replaced them...I liked the neros when i first got them but after 6 months they howl like crazy. The neros are by far the loudest tire I've ever owned at highway speeds...and that includes snow tires.

i probably am going to put some all-seasons on and am leaning towards the continental extremecontact dws. they are sold out on tirerack and other places online so ill just wait until they are around again and pick them up. just wish my stockers werent bent. they will balance out but the ride still isnt as nice as with my speed3s

Morning all!!

Forgestar moved the ship date from 7-10 days to 2-3 WEEKS. No wheels for Saturday... :( They thought they had the offset in stock but didn't.. they're making them now.

Morning NEPOCers! Last practice of the season tonight, kind of bummed, but it was a great season, ended up 4-4, better than last years team at my level did, they didnt win a game......so weve made progress......8 kids move on to the next level and 13 from the flag football team(5-6) yr olds will be eligible to move up so we will have en even bigger team next year. Now Kyle has MMA again starting next week, and he has wrestling and Lacrosse all winter. So he/I will be pretty busy! But I got asked to do the video's for MMA and Wrestling. So I am excited!

Kyle, did you check for the DWSs at discountiredirect? I see they are special order but might be worth a call to see how long it would take to get them. They offer free shipping......

Kyle, did you try negociating on the price with the local tire stores? Online is great for tire packages (tries and rims), but just tires you still need have them mounted. Most shops charge more just to mount tires. If you negociate you may pay a little more for the tire through them, but their mounting price is reduced and you may spend the same overall or even less.
Just a thouhgt.....
