The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

jeg's doesn't have anything like that? vibrant makes one but they are around $40 from a place that can't be named

gonna remove the center caps, see if i can't find some cheap blanks on ebay. that's the worst wheel, but for $200 i can't complain, with 3 good tires

No, but you can say speedcircuit.net. Kooldino (admin on here with the 340 whp MP3) owns the company / shop. Promote him all you want.

I'm considering parting out everything on the car and returning it completely to stock. Coilovers, rear sway bar, strut bars, wheels, exhaust, everything. I could make a good amount of money and then have a daily driver that rides well.

I've done some serious serious thinking and in the end, the car is just not worth it. I love it and all but it would be so much better to make some money, throw it into savings, and drive the car as is.

And that my friend is when you come to the harsh realization that no matter what you do to the car, it's still a Protege, and still suffers from the same dumb faults that all of them suffer from. To engineer around those faults to make it better costs soooo much bloody money.

got some new wheels! i think i'm gonna use these as my track wheels, for now atleast slightly used (little curbage and some scratches) but i couldn't pass up the deal.

What kind of racing are you going to be doing?

Yup. I'm in the process of looking for stock parts that I don't have. I think it will be slow and steady but it's a good decision.

Well, my car is always there to source stock parts from. I have a complete stock suspension still in tact. Stock axleback that's in good enough shape. Crap like that.

Well, Ivan. That sucks because I love your car. But That kinda doesn't suck because I'll end up buying most of your parts. I love my car and I don't care what Phen says about it. Haha! But I know what you mean, no matter how much money we dump into our Proteges, they're still Proteges. They are still wrong wheel drive and family sedans/wagons. But that's also the apeal of them to me. I like my wagon and I want her to be able to pass the slowest car (next to me, of course) on the track someday. Then I can die happy.

But if you do part out, it will be nice to have a very reliable DD and all the creature comforts and a quiet car again. Then you can just save and save $ and buy a real sports car in 2 years. But don't try to kid yourself that you are done modifying cars. We've all done that before... And we're all still on this bloody message board. :)

If you need any help or spare parts, Phen and I got you covered, son son.

ps- I've got a stock midpipe with a good cat too.

It'll be another Protege.. (rolleyes)

Just wondering, is Lewis Motorsports interested in doing head gasket or front crankshaft seal work?

Yeah, I know. It will be Kevins Protege. Haha! I can pass him and yell "Loooo-ser!" like Clarkson.

We at Lewis Motorsports are always willing to help. (I've never done either of those before so we will follow the manual very closely. tee-hee)

s***, I gotta stop talking about Lewis Motorsports like it's a real busniess/shop. Antione is going to want me to file for an AMA. Haha

Protege's a great car. I love mine. But the shortcomings it has are just so expensive to get over. It's not a car that's meant to go fast. Hell, even Miguel's $50k MSP in Spain is slow (in comparison to other cars with the same power) in the quarter mile. The best the car will ever be is a great looking canyon carver that can haul stuff. Unless you go KL... then you have potential, but it's still the amount of time and work you have to put into it to overcome its shortcomings. You'll have that with any car, but it's just one of those things. If I wanted a fast wagon to be a DD, slightly modify and haul stuff... let's face it, I'd buy a WRX. But... that wasn't what I wanted.

We'll keep it on the DL and call it LMS and no one will be the wiser. ;)

You've got a short nose, don't you?

or are you talking about the 626?

Yeah, it's a short nose. I think I should actually have one of the first Miatas made. It got born in I think May of 89...

But that's not the problem. The problem that a decent quantity of oil is leaking out of the engine, and I'm suspecting that it's at high rpms. I think this may also be why the oil pressure gauge is kinda all over the place sometimes. When I checked it with the mechanical gauge, it wasn't that far off. I think when it hits 0psi after a hard run and then coming back to idle, all of the oil is just getting pushed past the seals...

I'm pretty sure it's on the front of the engine, and not the valve cover. That one's easy to spot, and the front of the engine and everything in there is soaked. And it got a fresh coat on the trip to PA after I cleaned stuff off the night before, so now I have proof, I guess. I'm not sure how to narrow it down between either the head gasket or crank seal without tearing into it. I don't have all of the tools needed, so it might get interesting/expensive, albeit a great learning op. I've got the MX-5 Performance Projects book by Keith Tanner and both procedures are covered in it.

autocross with you if you let me know when they are ahead of time, maybe a hyperdrive or two next summer

You're coming to Mid-Ohio and you will love it. Marlon totally got me hooked. I only did one but I plan on going once a month now. Best $60 you could spend, fo sho!

Gotcha. Do you have any crank wobble caused by someone doing the timing belt replacemnt poorly? That's usually what causes issues like that.

well thats so kind of you HAHAHA :P

Well played sir.
