Maybe buying...

It seems that the previous owner traded it in because they were having a 4th kid and they couldn't fit them all.

My dad gets the impression that the car just wasn't big enough for the family, which seems reasonable.

I have already offered the dealer $17.5k and they won't take it. I think on Saturday I'll offer $18k so I can get most of a new set of tires paid for. If they don't take it I will head down the road to look at the 2008 red GT they have down there. I will be paying completely in cash thanks to my bank!

Thanks for the advice!

I posted this exact question on the other mazdaspeed forum and haven't even gotten one reply!
Thanks a lot!

That's understandable considering the car does book out at $20k; so getting it for $18k would still be pretty good. I would prefer the GT though. Comes with HID's, Bose, and leather. .

That "base 3" sedan picture you posted is HOT. however at the end of the day it would still be a boring car to drive. I encourage you to buy the speed 3 if you have any automotive passion in your soul. If you only care about going A to B then yes get the base.

However if you want a car that you get in and get grins from ear to ear when you step on the gas once in awhile get the speed 3. price difference isnt that much.

At my local dealer the speed 3 is cheaper then the regular 3 GT by $2,000!

I have 60,000 miles on my Speed 6 and its been problem free. not a single visit to the dealer aside from oil changes. Swirl valve was replaced at 14,000 miles just before i took ownership.

I would also like the GT, but it is also about $1000 more expensive and a year older. It only has 9,000 miles though..

That's not bad either then. Only 9k miles, with more options, and only $1k more expensive? I'd jump all over that one. LOL

Keep in mine dealers / people trying to sell cars will say anything to get your money. The “family needed a bigger car” is one of the most typical claims. One of my favorites is “The car was owned by an elderly man” the list goes on.

16k budget should land you an 08-08.5 (little difference between the two other than seats and MP3 capable head unit) with no problem. 10k down and only financing 6k will keep those payments REAL low.

Look for a 2008.5 or newer. There were several other revisions other than the head unit and seats. The most significant is a revision to the turbo seals to decrease the chances that they leak oil. This is a quality car. Interior plastics are good for the price range and, other than some interior rattles (stiff suspension on an economy car) mine has been problem free despite 25k miles in the year I've owned it. A few folks have blown engines, but this tends to be on modded cars. Stock they're totally solid. Best performance for the money out there.

Congrats! How much did you end up getting it for?

I haven't bought it YET. Technically they could sell it today, but I seriously doubt they will. I'm going to offer 18k even so I can buy a new set of tires, but if they say no I'll probably still take it for $18,370.
(encourage it's a good price...

I need a name!
I was thinking either CASPER or CIRRUS.
Others?
It's white.
