Who's installed an auxiliary transmission cooler?

at that point you aren't under the car, your in it, foot on the brake swithching through gears to make sure every last bit of old fluid comes out and is replaced by new fluid

Hey guys,

Let's not copy and paste directly from another forum, that can upset admins and members (read piss them off) when credit is due

Since this is in the Mazda5 section (no direct Mazda3 vs Mazda3) try to type the link with spaces i.e. w w w . o t h e r m a z d a f o r u m. c o m so credit is given and there is no a direct cross forums' linking

Thanks

OK, here we go...

How frequent are transmission failures in our cars? I don't remember reading of any here. I have high mileage on the 5 and I've never touched the fluid. I might want to, but the car shifts just fine now. That's why I'm wondering.

1. You run the risk of messing something up for doing this.

2. Each person knows themselves best and 'in the heat of battle' is to open to too many interpretations, so this added transmission cooler is NOT for everyone.

3. IF you're so worried about 'cooling' you transmission fluid, why not change the fluid more often and be a little kinder to your Auto Trans, have you done the 5 tips to extend your auto trans life yet?

4. IF you do plan to do this, please post a link to the PRODUCT.

(NOTE THIS IS NOT THE PRODUCT FOR THE MAZDA 5 / PREMACY IT IS JUST AN EXAMPLE !)

5. IF you plan to do this, please post a write up WITH pictures.

thanks, and good luck, now it's YOUR TURN to take the next step, and start installing this monster..... no?

Peace!(rei)

You run the risk of messing something up doing an oil change, but that doesn't stop me from doing my own. The point of this thread was to see if someone had done an install on the 5 and what pointers they might have. That all.

'in the heat of battle' is to open to too many interpretations?
I thought I made it pretty clear why I wanted to do this, if that isn't enough reason for you, then don't consider it.

3. IF you're so worried about 'cooling' you transmission fluid, why not change the fluid more often and be a little kinder to your Auto Trans...

I'm sorry, but I don't see how changing it more often is a better approach than installing a cooler to make it last longer. Heat is the mortal enemy to ALL automatic transmissions. There is no downside whatsoever to making the fluid run cooler. When 80% of the driving that's done on ours is highway, there's not much one can do to be a little 'kinder' to the thing.

I'll post pics when I get around to it.

Maybe this will help clarify a little...

^^ That chart is a great starting point for a good conversation. Does anyone know of a long thermometer that can be inserted in the dipstick tube while the engine is off?

Sorry, that wasn't directed towards you.

I'm not aware of a semi-flexible temp probe that would reach to the fluid.

How about one of these?

I guess that would work if you were driving long enough. Ours doesn't drive for long periods so I'm not sure if taking the housing temp would work. That is certainly a good, cheap idea. Thanks. Let's keep digging. I looked for a temp probe to go down the dipstick tube and so far only found oil pan sender units. I haven't given up yet. All we need is a good temp reading and we can use that graph that you posted.

Man, that looks great. Now if I just had a DMM. I might be able to find a friend with one. Pretty funny I'm an EE with no DMM. I don't work in EE any more though so I have a decent excuse. No...actually I don't on second thought.

Thanks for posting that man. That's a great idea.

Maybe you can use one of those barbecue thermometer. They have prove at the tip with a cable going to a receiver with digital read out. Some of them even have wireless receivers.
It should not be difficult to mcguiver a housing for the probe so that fluid will flow through it.

^^Now that is a very good idea indeed^^

All the ones I've seen are bent at the top of the probe, I wonder if it could just be straitened?
