buying a protege, unsure the engine size

we can't back down on the car now i already gave him $100 yesterday... can the dip in the engine be figured out without too much trouble?

why buy someone else's problem? find a car that doesn't have a list of pre-existing conditions.

there isn't any pre-existing conditions that's the only one. i'm okay with roll down windows and manual locks, as well as no cruise control, tach is no problem to install, for $600 this car is a steal, just wondering if that dip in the engine is anything to be seriously worried about. <-- like i said before theres no performance issues, no backfiring. when the car idles it does a small dip you can hear it i think it does it every about 5 or 6 seconds or so, it doesn't stall. could it be low on gas? lol

It could be something as simple as the EGR valve to be cleaned, or something more serious. If the engine DOES go, you'll be paying what you paid, or more, to get it replaced. I'd say ask for your deposit back and look for something better.

We're not trying to be harsh on you, but just trying to help you make a more educated decision...

i know but see there arent many cars around and i need one soon. so i'm going to go with this one. when we get the car in the driveway i can start at looking at the different spots of interest and do some work on it.

so EGR valve? where is that located?

Totally different body styles and engines. The problem you describe sounds like something that happens in the 1.8L and 2.0L

well we're going to check all the sensors, i can do that in the driveway tomorrow. i'll remove the manifold too see if there are any cracks in the exhaust. then bring it up to a friends to put it on his lift and check to see if the catalytic converter is plugged. if it is we'll get that replaced asap.

what else should i check up on while it's in the driveway, anything easy to get at i mean until we can get it up on a lift. also what should a plugged sensor look like?

The link he posted was for a 98, aka a 2nd Gen Protege. 99-03.5 is 3rd Gen

but seeing it's an engine problem does the body style matter all that much? just on the phone with my father then and he says probably a coolant sensor or something. he also said there's no problem driving it because its only running rich not lean so there shouldn't be any damage done to the engine.

just talked to mazda here locally they said the model is a 2000 Mazda Protege SE, not ES. it has the 1.6L manual transmission.
