Why not custom exhaust?

Curious about why folks tend to spend $500+ on CBE setups. Why not just have a muffler shop custom make something, likely for cheaper?

because they want brand name stuff lol
i never actually even thought of going to a exhaust shop to have them make me one, i would have saved alot of money if i did :/

im getting a 3" aluminum exhaust made soon, hopefully thats not too expensive

Haha I stopped by a few places getting quotes when I first bought my car, and the cost for mandrel bent exhaust was around 1100 for dp back 3" everywhere I went. Of course, you will spend less on chush bent exhaust, but that would defeat the purpose. $600 for stainless RacingBeat cbe, $450 for ATP dp w/cat...no brainer.

I'm interested to see how long it takes until your aluminum exhaust melts/falls apart :) I've never heard of an aluminum exhaust working out and curious to see if yours will. I'm no P5 expert, but my MS3 has cat temperatures well above 1300F, aluminum melts around 1200F, seems like a bad idea to me.

I wouldn't buy a pre-made CBE for this car. The only piece of exhaust that really matters is the downpipe, and it's easier to buy one that is a direct bolt-in.

i know aluminum melts at low temps, i also know that im keeping my current downpipe and just making it 3" back from there
and i dont have a cat, which would lower exhaust temps
ive heard of plenty aluminum exhausts working out, the guy whos making mine has one on his evo x
guess u didnt do research?

I don't think I've ever heard of an entirely aluminum exhaust. Most muffler shop and OEM exhausts are made of aluminized steel, which is generally good for temperatures below 800C/1472F.

Say hi to galvanic corrosion, acidic corrosion, fatigue cracking, and massive exhaust heat loss for me :)

Also, aluminum can burn.

Also, it'll lose 10x more heat than a SS exhaust, which will hurt performance (if only a little bit).

It is probably fine for some race applications where longevity isn't a big concern, but for a DD I just don't think it will last nearly as long as SS. Without a cat there's going to be all sorts of nasty acids that can form in exhaust gases that will corrode an aluminum exhaust much faster than SS. Strength, corrosion resistance, and stiffness all go straight to hell as temperatures increases much beyond 300F.

Also, a steel/iron DP will expand a different amount for the same temperature than aluminum will, so there will be some very weird interactions at the DP/Exhaust interface that probably aren't good.
