thepope540's KLDE swap / build thread

Sean -I'm happy to help. MS is pretty sweet.

The car fired today!!!! And we got the FM core mounted. Not as much done as we had hoped. But we crossed a few milestones.

i was just reading an article on clubprotege about v6 swap and they mentioned a couple of things i was curious about.
this is them

New Radiator Fan - You can either flip the fan on the front side of the radiator... or get a slim fan VERY SLIM..lol. Ive heard that the Mazdaspeed protege Fan is very very slim, Mike Moss used one on his K8 setup.

Mx3 V6 GS Shifter & Linkage (probe-626-mx6 wont work wont work at all, wont shift wont move at all, it can be forced on but it wont shift)

Mx3 V6 GS Cross Member (probe-mx6-626 one wont fit)

curious as to what you did about them

1. I'm going to track down a regular p5 radiator and some super slim fans. I have about 4" for the core and the fans. Any more than that and I worry about the fan melting on the manifold.

2. The stock msp linkage actually worked perfectly, but I am making a simple custom mount for the stabilizer bar.

3. The stock msp crossmember (runs front to back) would work perfectly by swapping the KL front mount and bolting the FS mount onto the trans. I have to make a custom crossmember because my turbo pipes are occupying the space that the crossmember would like to be in.

Grats on your install, The wiring isnt nearly the pain in the ass that people make it out to be.

The one over sight that you might find in your build, and you may have taken this into consideration already, the stock injectors can barely feed these engines without any FI.

90% duty @ 7krpm N/A

Bigger pump and Nissan side feed injectors are the best way to do it, with minimal modification.

Here's mine, Rocked N/A last summer, Boosted as of January of this year.

You need to use the stock KLDE radiator, the inlet and outlets of the P5 rad are wrong.
Use slim fans as pushers, I use one mr gasket fan. It works mint.

I made a bar for the front motor mount that attached where the tow plates on each frame rail used to be, if you need pictures, I can help with that too.

Thanks for the info. I can't use the fans as pushers because I'm retaining AC and there won't be space between the AC coil and the radiator. Plus the MX6 rad is about 4 inches too wide to fit in the engine bay. I'm going to try to make a p5 rad work because I know it will fit in the engine bay with some slim fans.

I cut the bumper bar and mounted the intercooler core to it last weekend so thats all taken care of. I also picked up a set of Millenia S injectors to drop in.

Im sure you could make any custom hoses you need with silicon and joiners. Lots of random small dia stuff at siliconintakes im sure would work great for rad hoses.

The problem I had, was the inlets are litteraly reversed from the KL radiator, so the hoses would have to be run a much longer length, limiting IC piping options.

Its absolutley possible though, just a shade more work.

custom rad hoses + water/air intercooler = problem solved =)

hey pope when does summer vacation start for you. you think it will be completley finished?

Summer starts 6/10 - It should be done before then. Today we got some more little crap done. Intercooler is all plumbed up and ready to go. The injectors are in the rails. Ect...

The most interesting development is that I actually have a KLZE in my car. It has a DE manifold, but when I pulled the intake I found KL31 heads looking back at me. Thats a surprise!

are you planning any roadtrips? i know i am.
other news i just got the engine to my house yesterday. but my mom wants me to clean up the house first plus it is supposed to rain tomorrow so i should be starting on the engine on wednesday and i should also be getting back to the ms soon my buddy ends school this week. i just want to find out if my engine is a true klze like it was advertised as, but eitherway it is a V6

Sweet. It was a real surprise to find out that I have a KLZE in my car. It has a DE intake manifold and I didn't think anything of it, but I pulled the manifold to install my injectors and the thing is a ZE... Makes me a little scared of boosting it now. Good luck with your swap. Let me know when you get started and I'll try to walk you through some of my bigger headaches.

I was going to ask you why didnt you get a klze but i guess you do now. what wrong with boosting that motor???? o i was going to ask you what tranny are you using???

Because 10.5-1 compression and boost can be pretty unfriendly.
You could probably get a thicker head gasket or something though to make it more friendly. or maybe hold off on the boost till you get it all running comfortably, and swap the lower end for forged equipment.
since you have ze heads, the rest of the motor is incidental ;)

there are lots of people who are running under 8 psi on the ze. just need a good tune on your ms. of course 8 psi on a ze is probably all you will ever need/want on fwd.

ZE is higher compression and doesn't like much boost. I'm just going to keep the boost to around 6 psi and be careful with my tune. Once I have the other motor ready I won't have to worry as much, but I don't want to turn around and blow the thing up all over again.
