Is Anyone Porting their Wastegate

There are issues arising in some of the threads here regarding boost creep when mods reach a certain level. Boost creep is dangerous and may be causing some of the reported failures. There really is no effective way to tune around boost creep. The wastegate reaches maximum port flow capacity and can't discharge all of the exhaust needed to keep boost from rising past your target value.

In other platforms it has been a common practice to port the wastegate by increasing its diameter and by increasing the diameter of the flapper.

I do not know whether this is possible on the K04. Nor do I know how much enlargement is possible or appropriate. The process is relatively simple once the turbo is off and disassembled so that the grit can be effectively removed before reassembly.

Question: Who has done this, what have you done and what are the results?

I have the capability of doing this work "in house" but have not experimented with the K04 and with the flow needs we have.

What say ye?

I think PG's Reworked K04 eliminates or greatly reduces boost creep

Probably right, Darth, but maybe Ken can tell us if they are doing any work on the wastegate on their K04 upgrade.

My only experience on this issue has been on Garrett turbos. That's why I'm asking if anyone has been down this road on the K04.

I like our small turbo. I'd just like a little more wastegate flow ability.

Ken ? ? ?

Anyone ? ? ?

LMAO no it doesn't the reworked K04 helped me blow up, then again my car had the first PG reworked K04 on it...i would see boost creep a lot especially if i am driving up hills or am in higher elevations and my car didn't like it just my .02 cents

hey jackass... you jacked up the boost to 20 pound without a tune. you were asking for it. The turbo didnt help you blow up, the user did. BTW that car ran perfectly fine and made great power for 2 years before your dumbass ****** it up

Woah Woah! this isnt a bashing site. constructive criticism only! no need to call people names! I agree that a tune would have helped axis but you cant just start slinging profanity around at him!

actually dude i did that at the track once! yea i did drive it rough but the thing is, is that no matter what with the previous owner and with me owning it the PG reworked K04 still boost crept. I DD the car at 17psi 75% of of the time that i drove the car i had my kids in the back seat and i know how to drive with the kids in the car. you don't know me you don't know my driving habits so shut the **** up. i will be the one laughing when your car goes. I simply said that i still got boost creep, that is what the OP was asking and i have the experience to tell him that even with the reworked K04 that it still does creep. take it for what it is or GTFO if you wanna bash!

Wonder if the BNR staged turbos eliminate the boost creep..cant wait to see results on thier stage 3 setup, basicly a 2871 turbo in a nutshell.

im thinking that since I have two turbo assemblies that I might try this whole porting of the wastegate thing to see how it works. Even a small increase of the diameter will do a great deal due to some crazy circumference equation with pi being cubed and some complicated stuff like that. (I HATE MATH). any math gurus out their feel free to post the exact equation lol. even though PG told me that the reworked turbo will ELIMINATE boost creep...and ken over their at PG has a great deal of experience so...

Just FYI, boost creep only occurs at higher rpm levels and is caused by the exhaust volume overwhelming the wastegate's ability to flow. There is no possibility EVER of creeping at low RPMs. Even with a stock wastegate port size, the ATP 2871r which is a considerably larger turbo, does not begin to creep until 4500 rpm. The car spiked because of cold weather and low RPM high load condition.

My stock motor didnt go running fully bolted at 22.5 pounds, but I also controlled spikes and did not have a problem with the wastegate causing creep. its all in how you drive it. You are referring to low rpm, high load conditions which cause the turbo to OVERBOOST/SPIKE which will put excessive loads on the rods/bearings and blow the motor.
