ipad deck...

truthfully, they are. you can get a wifi only unit or get the 3G and wifi unit later. but they charge an asinine amount for the 3G feature. $130 for a 3G antenna? yeah, thats not markup. i could just sign up for a 3G data plan and get the USB 3G dongle from three different carriers in my area and plug it in to ... oh wait, i can't, the iPad has no USB ports. guess i'll have to settle for paying less for a 3G plan and antenna I can use on all my various laptops or that super sweet Windows tablet i posted than paying **** for being able to use it on one iPad. oh the inequity of it all!

I did some research on that viliv umpc. Never heard of the brand but, based on the few reviews I could find, it appears to be a high quality device with all the bells and whistles (minus windows 7) one could want. It's also worth noting that they have an entire product line that includes everything from a traditional swivel screen tablet to an even smaller umpc. I certainly applaud their ambition... but they clearly need to find more channels to break into here in the states. Obviously easier said than done. Simply having the best of breed isn't always enough.

All that said... comparing an umpc that's running a traditional windows OS (even if it's 'slightly' tweaked) to the iPhone OS on the iPad is similar to comparing any number of Windows Mobile phones to an iPhone. Take the HTC HD2 for example. On paper, it destroys everything... including the iPhone. Why can't it get out of its own way? Various reasons... but one of which is the horrid Windows OS. Hopefully WM7 will improve on 6.5 but for now... that's what you're stuck with. So in the end, for what people need/use it for, the iPhone (complete with its inferior specs) is by far the better option.

I feel this is potentially the case here. In watching some of the viliv's youtube videos, it's obvious these supposed tweaks to the windows OS (motoblur sense style) have done little to make this device truly 'finger friendly'. Everything about the iPhone OS is designed around the average person's finger size. Combined with the resolution and inherent qualities of XP (or even 7) that cannot be said for a device like this. On more than on occasion, I saw the presenter desperately trying to hit the tiny [X] with his pinky. LOL Could he have used a stylus? Sure... but it's easier to use one's finger. That's why capactive touch reigns supreme amongst personal (vs business) users. These are the kinds of little (yet HUGE) things that Apple has realized and incorporated into their OS. This will equal an easier to use device... something that appeals to the masses.

Again... spec wise this thing owns. Very impressive indeed. In fact, if I was in the market for something like this I'd seriously consider it. That's how impressed I was. But the same things that the iPad haters have used to trash that device can be said about this. Some of you have said one who has a laptop/netbook AND iphone/touch already wouldn't need the iPad since it doesn't do anything new. The viliv is more similar to a laptop/netbook than an iPad. When you break it down, it's basically a netbook running windows with touchscreen and no keyboard. The iPad is not a netbook without a keyboard. It's not even an imac/macbook without a keyboard. So it's MUCH less similar to those devices. Since there are still plenty of people without iphones/itouches... this device would represent a dramatically different experience than what they're used to dealing with on their mobile phones. So... in the end, I feel there are enough differences to warrant consideration. Only time will tell.

the cusp of your argument is this;

the viliv is a full featured computer
the ipad is an iPod touch xl handicapped by the manufacturer

they are the same price. One does less for the same or more money. It's insulting on Apples part. It's more insulting that people might buy alot of these.
. Let me ask you this. If Microsoft had launched this with it's name would it well or have he same hype? No. It's not going to sell becuase it's great or good product. It's going to sell because herbal remedy for cancer steve jobs is talking about it. I agree with that and the mArketing lingo. But I will gladly tell people, as a mac mini owner and avid iPhone user, to buy something else when it simply makes sense to.

As for more channels to sell viliv, stay tuned to my site :)

oh god i feel another argument about to ensue hahah. and what will you use as an excuse now. no more super bowl booze here. XD hahahaha roflcopter

Well I can knock back a few beers if that'll help :)

honestly I understand Chico. Easy to use. Apples mass market appeal. User friendly. Will well on name alone. I don't disagree with that. In fact none of that has anything to do with the thread or what I'm saying. It still is over priced. If you are going to price it as a netbook and a tablet and a laptop and call it a category killer or magic device that's going to change the world, you are opening the door for criticism and you should welcome it. It is none of those things. Making a slick device for the masses does not exempt it from fair honest and accurate criticism about what it cannot do for the money. Apple fanboys can't rationalize that simple truth.

I was told the other day the big draw was being able to sign up for a d pay for news papers on the ipad. Guess that beats free Reuters, AP, CNN, MSNBC on a computer. Sign me up!

"oh it sells". So do Chevy Aveos for their own reasons. So what?

And as the original thread about it being a replacement car stereo - again, bad.

Is it even possible to do so? replace the stereo with it?

So I assume that the Viliv cannot be used as a car headunit? I mean that would be totally sweet and would pretty much own the market. Imagine all those features with a quick release from the dash kit so you can use it on the go and spoil the plans of car theives. BRILLIANT.

LOL no... that's NOT the crux of my argument. Again, it boils down to the OS. Windows is great for when you're sitting down with a keyboard and mouse. The iPhone OS is great for when you're on the go and don't have (or want to use) those things. Because of the nature of a portable device like this, I feel the iPhone OS is far better suited for what most people will need it for. Because of this, it'll be the overall 'better' product. Roll your eyes all you want. I go back to my comparison of the Windows Mobile 6.5 POS running on the firebreathing HTC HD2 smartphone vs the iPhone. Having used both extensively, I can tell you there's no comparison. The iPhone destroys it. Sometimes less is more.

Seriously? Think of all the times you're in and out of your car everyday. Do you really wanna be waiting for Windows to boot up every time you turn the key? Oh... I forgot. Sleep mode... right! lol F'in sleep mode... what a joke! that crap just never seemed to work for me. I'd put my computer to bed and wake up with it on. Why? wtf knows. I used to use the WMCE as my DVR. Even though I told it to wake itself up to record shows... it never did. So yeah... I don't think I'd want any part of Windows anything as my headunit. I need to be hearing tunes within 3 seconds of starting my car... no messing around with error messages and dialog boxes and all the other BS that always seems to come with any Windows OS

Lol ever hear of a solid state drive? I don't know what kind of hard drive is in the Viliv, but Apple isn't the only company doing R&D.

i agree on windows mobile being awful. thats why i own an iphone :)

if the ipad were appropriately priced and could do some things, even if not all, the same as same priced and equipped PC, i might agree. it can't do any of those things without jailbreaking even then falling short, which is a joke. its not a better product if it sells better. installed consumer base does not equate to a higher quality unit, sorry. like it or not, it is an iPod touch for the blind with off the shelf parts cashing in at a high margin on people's willingness to buy Apple products. nothing in the keynote about it being a revolutionary device is true or honest. people did not have the same volume of complaints about the iPod, iPhone or iPod touch as this for good reasons. the fanboys decry the bitterness despite how clear the con here is to more and more people.

its still going to sell, but from a functional standpoint all the criticisms about the capability (lack of) and the price point are true. its going to sell, but if Steve Jobs has a pipe dream that this will be the death knell for laptops and micro laptops, he's arrogantly wrong.

of course, six months from now, iPad 2.0 will arrive and address all these concerns, and even the early adopters will plunk down the same amount of money to "upgrade". thats what i roll my eyes at.(puke)

solid state up to 128 GB for the price of a 64 GB iPad. boot time of 4 seconds on the Viliv into Windows XP or Windows 7 tablet with a customized GUI for the A/V stuff.

most people don't realize pretty much all touchscreen head units run Windows CE or a stripped version of Windows any way, you just never see it. heck, the video of the unit in my car (See front page of PG), that thing runs Windows CE. now what if Apple made a car radio? it'd have no aux inputs of any kind or media drives to use but it would make the same sound WALL-E makes when his solar batteries charge up. iCar?

chico, youre still missing the point. we all are well aware that the OSX beats windows and linux (kind of) and that the iphone OS beats windows mobile, which is a steaming pile of garbage.
the point is people dont want the iphone OS on something the size of a laptop with less functionality than the iphone or a laptop, and with a higher price to boot. thats what it boils down to. if it ran OSX legit, it would be a completely different story.

OSX is amazing for computers and the iphone OS is amazing for phones. but apple skimped out and tried to repurpose the iphone one for something it was never made to. if they made an OS for the ipad, maybe it would be amazing. but instead they wanted to use the OS for a 412mhZ machine on something thats supposed to run faster than a 1.4ghZ core. dont you see how thats stupid? dont you see how restricted that is? the intuition of the OS doesnt matter when its so restricted

Gee that's funny. If I read that correctly, Windows 7 is on a 2nd partition of the hard drive from the factory. I thought Mac was sooooo much better than Windows? Apple is starting to remind me of Sony. They are so desperate for new ideas that they will make products that actually hurt some of their older ideas.

this should be a sticky so if anyone EVER asks the same question we never have to go through this again. hahahahah

I think this video really demonstrates the point I was making. Even though they're reviewing the Archos 9 (the viliv received a slightly better review but suffers from the same problems) I think/hope you can finally see what I was describing to be the biggest problem with a device like this. Rest assured, the iPad will not suffer from these issues.

The iPad will be running a slightly tweaked version of iPhone OS that takes advantage of the bigger screen. The combination of a faster processor and more RAM will undoubtedly lead to an updated version of the OS (at or soon after the initial launch) that will enable multitasking. As I've mentioned, this is all by design. Call it trickle-down marketing.

Anyway... I think the poor horse has had enough. In a month or so we'll begin to see what this thing's all about. Till then, for the netbook and viliv/archos users of the world... happy squinting.

for the netbook and viliv/archos users of the world... happy squinting.

funny, thats what all the eReader fans are saying about the ipad's screen being wholly unsuitable for long term reading. and if the viliv screen is the same and the unit is close to the same size with pan and zoom capabilities as the iPad ... that means what? (moon)

oh man.... lol

did you watch the cnet video? I realize that's NOT the viliv but it might as well be. Look at that Windows taskbar at the bottom... It's one thing to operate a netbook with a keyboard and mouse. Sure, everything is cramped onto the tiny screen but those tools at least make it doable. But trying to use your F'in finger? F that!!! I thought the CNET video did a good job showing just how much that sucks.

Conversely, despite the fact that the screen's about the same size, everything is optimized and designed around the mofo'ing finger!! so instead of taking your pinky nail and tapping on the start button... then programs... then scrolling... only for the window to dissapear forcing you to start all over... you just tap tap tap your F'in finger to and fro. God damnit Apple should be paying me royalties on this mofo.

wait 6 months and theyll send you one for half price, since everyone will be paying about that much by then just so apple can get them off the shelves.
